In the beginning, there existed nothing but the Void.
Then something happened in the Void such that it was no longer empty. There was a circle. From the circle shone the Light and tendrils of it poured out of it. Like a curious child, the Light reached out with its tendrils into the emptiness. It probed around finding nothing. For that was what the Void was. It was nothing.
Or, rather, that was what it used to be. Now, it was filled with Light, swimming around in glee and exploring, searching around to see if it could find something. It swam around for an eternity, growing lonelier until it finally found someone else in the Void.
For opposite the circle of light, across the empty expanse, another circle had opened. From it poured forth tendrils of the Darkness. Like light, it reached out into the Void, searching for anything it could find.
The two tendrils touched and recoiled immediately.
They both had felt something. A tinge of pain and pleasure, fear and exhilaration. It was unlike anything either had experienced every before for they were both new to existence. There had been nothing but the Void before them and now, they had birthed themselves into it.
The tendrils reached out again, slowly and carefully this time. The thin wisps of light and dark touched and there was a spark. The tendrils retreated momentarily before reaching out again, this time holding on to each other despite the heated spark that crackled and exploded with energy where they touched.
Suddenly, as if of the same mind, Light and Darkness reached out to each other with all of their tendrils. Sparks exploded everywhere as they wrapped themselves around each other, exploring each other with frantic curiosity. They coiled over each other, unwilling to let go of a friend they’d found after several eternities spent swimming alone in the emptiness.
Where Light shone on the Darkness, it felt pain it found itself being seared away. And where Darkness crept up on Light, it felt itself grow hollow.
Their swirling mass began to grow as they both fuelled each other. The Light brought peace and calm to the Darkness. The Darkness brought frenzy and excitement to the Light.
The Light was Order and Preservation.
