Istanbul, Turkey 9:34pm
“Oh come on,” Süheyla whined, poking my right arm like a five year old kid. “You should do a dare this time.” Jeeze, it is just a game give it a try girl, that was the expression on Maria’s face telling me to just do it. I extended my arm into the pile of folded papers on the ground. The paper sliced through my finger giving me a paper cut on the side. “ah...” I said under my breath, putting that finger in my mouth for the bleeding to stop till I open the paper with my other hand. I frowned at those scribbled words across those straight blue lines. “Seriously,” I looked at Süheyla. She had that big frustrating smirk splattered across her face. “You want me to scream on top of your rooftop singing the ABC’s?”
Süheyla and Maria bursted into laughter, I had to act serious, but I couldn’t help but escape a smile. “Give me something harder gosh.” I said rolling my eyes, going back to the pile my phone rang that same second. “Hello?” it was an unknown number. “oh, okay just a sec…” I replied. “it’s the pizza guy outside” I answered their questioning faces. “I’ll go get it.” Maria said getting up, disappearing into the hallway. “So, where were we?” Süheyla asked.” I opened the paper and read it out loud: “Dial your phone number.” it said, that wasn't harder it all. “ok at least this is better than the clown act you guys wanted me to do.” “We’re not just going to spend our evening on the same round, come on call yourself and open the speakers.” She said.
The phone kept ringing and ringing for a minute or two, till the point it got boring. “Ok I’m just going to hang up because this is no use.” “No, No wait what’s the dare??” Maria asked managing to carry the pizza and drinks. “That I have call my number that’s all. And it’s been ringing for three legitimate minutes.” I showed her my screen “What kind of-” Maria got cut off by the strange shuffling of papers from the other end of the line. My eyes opened wide my hands covering my mouth, unconsciously laying the phone on the floor.
“Uh... Hey? Um sorry I fell asleep.” a deep males voice said, “You still there...?” Maria looked at me mouthing me ‘what the hell, Leila’. His voice literally sent some chills through my spine. I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out “okay I guess I’ll call you later or something like that.” The phone ended as I just did not expect that to happen. “Is it normal for others to have the same number or what-” Maria asked munching on that Italian flat bread covered with cheese and sauce. “I don’t know,” I said, “But I do know that I’m going to bite you if you don’t hand me a slice.” I laughed, not because it was funny, it is because of what just happened earlier. it’s creepy but hilarious.
“So, you going to call later or…?” Süheyla asked picking a paper for her turn. “I don’t know honestly, he isn’t supposed to have my number… Or maybe I shouldn’t have his number.” okay that was the point that my head started to rail around with thoughts. “hey, you got Capri sun in your fridge?” Süheyla nodded. I don’t really like drinking soda’s and stuff, call me weird I don’t care, but I still am madly in love with natural strawberry juice in a bag. I got up, to the fridge poking the straw into the bag and going out to the backyard laying on the damp grass that tickled my legs.
Looking at the dark sky every star was shinier than the other. one, two, three… the sound of those crickets flew all over the space surrounding me. There was this one star that caught my attention, prepping myself on my shoulders my head tilted staring at that gorgeous ball of fire. I got up feeling this sudden urge to swirl and dance. I just couldn’t help it, really. I popped in my headphones, playing ‘Put your records on’ by Ritt Momney (https://youtu.be/W5ALmRqzVCo) my feet leading me through the dark slowly swaying and humming to the tune. my closed eyes visioning colors and strange things letting me melt into my own reality. The breeze hitting my face making me smile, the wind soon enough started dancing with me. “Leila... Leila…LEILA” I heard someone quietly shouting. I lost my balance and fell on the ground. “yes... yes?!” I looked up expecting it was either Süheyla or Maria. Spotting over the fence was a huge smile and a bundle of joy. “hey! it’s you again” I said picking up little Luna placing her on my lap “I got you again,” she said giggling, “You sure did you little rebel, and because of that the tickle monster is going to attack YOU.” I said tickling her, as she tried to squirm out of my arms.
“S-stop” she said laughing. “See!” she said with so much enthusiasm lifting her hand to my face her small fingers gripping her crayons. “Were you drawing?” I asked, playing with her cheeks. “mhm, I drew my baby brother!” she said putting her head on my shoulder as a little yawn escaped her little mouth. Playing with her hair, soon she fell asleep. Her mother smiling from her side of the fence. “Hi Leila” she said in her warming tone. I got up carrying Luna “hey,” I answered her, shaking her hand. “Thanks for putting her to sleep, I’m already struggling with the baby boy” she said as I kissed Luna’s cheek before I handed her to her mother. “It was nothing really, she fell asleep while we were talking. Here are her crayons”” I said put them in the little girl’s pocket as we both asked each other how everything was. I told her everything was fine just a bit till the semester ends, University here was great I had my friends with me, we planned going on back home in the end of January. Her Husband was gone for the military, I wished her good luck gave her a hug as she went into her small house her little girl hugging her neck.
I found Süheyla and Maria peacefully asleep on the bed, I closed the tv and covered Süheyla and woke up Maria so we could leave. I drove off, the windows down just the way I love it. After dropping off Maria, I went to get some groceries so I could find something to cook for breakfast. Walking around the aisles, I found myself thinking of what happened today. I wonder how he looks like… his sound echoed in my head. What if someone wanted to call me but called him... oh my gosh that’ll be so embarrassing, they’d think we’re together or something... WHAT…NO… that’s going to be so bad, that can’t happen, I really had to dig into this tomorrow because I’m so tired right now. I went to the cashier, I handed the woman my card as she laughed, I was surely confused. “this is your driving license” ok that made sense. “sorry,” I laughed giving her my credit card. “let me give you a hand sweetheart” she said closing her cashier carrying some bags. “Thank you.” I said giving her a warm smile. Halfway home, It started to softly rain. I parked my car, sat on the top of my car the sound of those sweet raindrops were louder than my thoughts which made me calm, my eyelids heavily dropped… dismissing me to rest...
