”This can’t be happening! This seriously cannot be happening right now,” I say running as fast as I could as my ankle burned from the pain. “Everything was fine just a few minutes ago. I don’t understand what went wrong!”

I always thought life was supposed to be pretty straightforward. You're born, you go to school, go to college, then work until the end. But... sometimes, life doesn't always go the way you want it to. "GEM! Have you heard about that huge finance exam coming up? It's going to have like sixty questions on it," my best friend, Josie exclaims. I frown, "Shit, seriously!? You've got to be kidding me, I'm barely passing that class as it is."
I've known Josie since I was in middle school. She practically saved me from being bullied by some boys. You see, I've always been bullied for my weight so, I've struggled with confrontation, boys, and people. My verdict is-- people suck. After helping me, she began talking to me more and the rest is history.
As we continue our rant about how terrible Finance 270 is, I notice one of my class's most popular figures walking up to us. Murphy Delgato. When he gets to us, he stops and grins as he looks Josie up and down. "Aye Barnes, you look good today, how are you?" He says winking at her. Josie blushes and says, "I'm good Murphy, thanks. How are you?" "I'm ight," he smirks. When he notices that I'm there, he almost pauses and his smirk fades, "Germ." I give him a look of disdain, "Potato." He rolls his eyes and turns his attention back to Josie.
Murphy is a perfect example of how most people I encounter in my life act towards me, my size is enough to turn people away. I've learned to exist when guys come up to talk to Josie simply; some things never change. I mean mug Murphy as he asks Josie on a date to see the new Venom movie, she doesn't even like stuff like that, but of course, she says yes. I take this as my chance to head out.
"I'll catch you in Psych J, I'm going to head to the store real quick to grab a drink," I say trying to leave as soon as possible. Josie frowns, she knows what's up, this happens almost every day. "Wait, I can come with you," she says hurriedly. I shake my head, "Nah, it's okay. I'll make sure to get you something too, grape juice right?" Josie pauses as if she wants to say something else and then nods slowly, "yes." That said, I smile at her for reassurance that I'm fine and turn to start heading to the 7/11. I love Josie, but I can imagine like a thousand different places I'd rather be than standing around while another pretty boy jock flirt with my friend.
On my walk to the store, I notice what almost seems like a shadow darting towards the store. I shake my head, "I'm just tired, I'm seeing things. Weird shit happens every day." I continue walking till I reach the store and step through the squeaky automatic doors. "Welcome," the store clerk says. "Hi," I smile and walk towards the back where the drinks are and look for a welch's grape juice for Josie and a Fanta orange soda for me. I try to watch how much soda I drink, but I can't resist getting an orange Fanta every once in a while.
As I'm grabbing the drinks, I feel a chill run down my spine as I hear shouting coming from the front of the store. *fwoom* The lights go out. "Stop, thief!" the store clerk shouts and before I could even register what was going on, a shadowy figure runs up to me and grabs my bag. "Let go of me!" I shout trying to pull away. He was too strong, and with a quick shove I fall to the ground, twisting my ankle, "ouch, what the fuck!?"
The figure snickers, "Should've let go without a fight." His voice sent another chill down my spine as he rushed out of the store, but not before I see the twinge of light hit his necklace that was in the shape of a cross. As the store clerk came to check on me, shock and fear course through my body and I couldn't even focus on what the man was saying. As soon as he helped me up, my body started moving on its own, and all I could think to do... was run.

*Fun fact: Slang for the name Murphy is an Irish or white potato, hence why Gem calls him a Potato.
