"Given and Denied" (Poets of The Fall)

Given not a clear path to my youth, I wonder.
What choices I made were the right ones?
I let go of the years like the wind between my fingers, unable to grasp the time.
I lay in a ship of time, just floating and drifting endlessly.
I look at the water down at my feet, and it's crystal clear.
Seeing the bottom and very shallow, I thought I understood my life.
The truth came to me, and I knew nothing.
Life is a stage, and my audience is shadows and lies.
When it's time for a curtain call, who will applaud?
No one.
We are given or denied a good life.
Times are tough for others and easy for the few.
What can we do, just accept our lot and move on?
Simply given or denied good graces and cursed most of the time.
Give me wings and let me fly away from this life.
I fell like a leaf from the tree of life into a blue, relentless sea.
Left on my own and left to drown and wash up on a deserted beach somewhere.
I lay motionless, hearing the sun's lullabies, and left a golden crown where the night now stands.
Now I remember where I stand.
No matter the circumstances, we are given and denied.
