“The dinner tonight’s served with freshly grilled lobster and a side of clam chowder, all caught today from the ship’s dock by yours truly.” Sebastian bowed when he finished bragging. “I hope you enjoy.”
I stared as everyone cut into their lobster and started eating, having casual conversations with each other as some laughed to mask their fear.
“You caught these yourself?” I said then, shaking my head. “What a butler you are.”
“I keep telling you that I am simply, one hell of a butler,” Sebastian stated proudly.
“That that why you were wet this morning? You didn’t see fit to use a fishing rod?”
“What fun is that? I got to swim to the bottom of the ocean where no one has before. It was a very interesting sight indeed. I actually found an angular fish, too.” He smiled sweetly. “Sure, it did want to eat me but… predators are predators.”
I just rolled my eyes. “Show off.”
He just chuckled.
Madam Deneise just sat up, clearing her throat. “Excuse me, everyone. I must go to bed early. I am feeling quite faint, indeed.”
She smiled kindly and bowed before everyone, stepping over to the doors that reside behind me.
Right before she made it to the doors, she flipped her hand outward as a small note slipped from her fingers.
I took it silently, and she left the room.
Sebastian gazed down at the note before looking up at the crowd. “Is everyone done with their meals?”
All of them nodded at once, and stood from their seats, wiping their mouths.
“Alright,” I said then, standing as well, “Carter, you stay back and clean up this mess. Cammie and Maddox with take the suspects to their rooms, and everyone else… make sure you have someone to sleep with tonight, yeah? I don’t think another murder would a good sight to see.”
They all nodded at once and exited the room.
Cammie send me a brief look before exiting the room with Beth, Beham, and Jamison.
When they left, I looked up at Carter. “Can you handle this by yourself? Without breaking all the dishes?”
He gave a salute. “Aye, master. I can do it!”
“What have I done?” I said as I looked over at Sebastian. “What have I done?”
“I know not, master,” he said, chuckling a little.
I then pulled the note out and gazed down at it, lashes lowering as I read the small, fine text.
I know who the killer is.
Or… the mastermind behind the murders.
These are all but small pranks, she has a real target.
Meet me in my bedroom when everyone’s done with dinner. I need to tell you everything with no witnesses.
- Deneise
I immediately clenched the paper in my hand, feeling Sebastian gaze down at me in question.
“Idiot!” I yelled, immediately rushing out the bedroom door.
I continued down the hall in a hurry, feeling Sebastian follow behind me.
“Master?” he called. “Master, what is it?”
I then stopped at her doorway, brows drawing together when I found an odd thing on the floor.
It was yellow and thin, like a small piece of a blanket.
I picked it up, assessing it thoroughly.
Yarn…?
But I shoved the thought away.
I rushed forward until I met her bedroom, and I immediately slammed open her door.
I froze then, eyes widening as a sudden frost consumed me.
The note slipped from my hands, drifting slowly to the ground.
Sebastian stopped behind me, stance immediately stiffening when he saw the dead body lying face-down on the bedroom floor.
Madam Deneise.
