The wind drifted through the trees on this warm, autumn night. The gargantuan oaks stood still as dozens of leaves fell from the heavens above, coating the ground with orange, red, and yellow colors. It brought beauty to the woods here. But, with what was about to happen, nothing would ever be able to make this place beautiful again.
I trudged through the heavy piling of leaves on the ground, careful not to leave tracks or make too much of a racket. The woods were calm and still tonight, but that was not enough to mask its feral side. The heavy, black bag I was dragging put a lot of strain on me, but I was finally able to drop it near a secluded place between two, small, bumpy hills in the landscape.
I wiped sweat off my forehead as I unzipped the bag and lightly pulled it back, revealing a body. I could almost swear I felt the animals in the woods flee from the place between the two hills – soon to be a crime scene. You might think it's odd that I see such beauty in these woods, but let's just say that this isn't the first time I've been here. I took a long look at the body, committing each of their features to memory before looking away.
The person I had just murdered was a man. He was middle-aged, had brown hair combed to the side and parted in the middle, and he was wearing a leather jacket, jeans, and polished shoes, unusual for someone who was usually dressed in suits. The dried-up blood on his forehead almost looked like paint, but I knew better – the police would know better, as would everyone else.
I tilted the body bag I had been dragging upward, and a shovel fell out, making a clomping noise on the ground. That's not all that dripped out, though. Blood dripped out too, coming out in a thick line of dribble. The ground surrounding me was now stained a dark red. I didn't have time to keep thinking about this, though. I picked up the shovel and got to work fast, every scoop of dirt with the shovel a piece of this night that would soon cloud my mind.
After an hour's worth of time passed, the hole I was digging had been dug, and I dragged the body towards its grave and plopped it right in the hole. The sound the body made when it hit compact earth echoed through the ground, spreading up my skin until it was too much for me and I quickly concealed the body underground with the dirt I had just removed from the ground.
Just as the body had been buried and just as I was about to leave, I heard something. I hid behind the decline of the small hill. It sounded like screeching noises, almost as if an animal had been clawed by its predator. But, I knew this wasn't the case. It was those meddling kids shouting, the ones that had caused this peaceful night to become a tragic one. I waited for the sounds to pass and walked away from the scene of the crime, part of the wildness of these woods becoming part of me as I left.
