The air swirled around me and the flutter of paper filled my ears. I had finally managed to open up a cross dimensional portal, years of work finally paid off.
“I did it.” I muttered under my breathe. I took a tentative step forward, I felt myself slip on a piece of paper. I stumbled towards the portal realizing all to late, I won’t just be the first person the open a cross dimensional portal, I’ll also be the first person to cross dimensions. A curse slipped from my lips as I felt my blood boil and my lungs pushing against my ribs. Suddenly it stops, I open my eyes and I see myself staring back at me. A large duffel bag in hand, shoving stuff in it.
“Ah shit, I knew this would happen one day, but why today” the other me says.
“Why? What’s today?”
“The Gufujagin are invading.”
“The what?”
“Long story short, 5 years ago I opened my own portal and it led to an advanced but peaceful society, I told the government, they went in, stole their spaceships and other tech and got out. We used the ships we stole to travel in-between solar systems, until we met the Gufujagin in one of the solar systems and there was a skirmish. We won. We had peace talk and our relationship has been peaceful but tense, until now. One of nuclear satellites crashed into their home world, they thought it was intentional."
"Wow this is a bit too much all at once. Can you say that again?"
"There's no time" other me says trusting a pistol into my hands. it didn't look like any gun I've ever seen. Not as bulky nor as heavy as normal guns, just a place to put battery's and a long tube, on the tube there was 100% in green light, squeezing the trigger a bolt of energy leaped out of the barrel searing the floor and the green light briefly flashed red before 99% showed up on the barrel.
"Stop screwing around lets go." With that he grabbed my hand and pulled me out onto the street. Above me massive ships spanning kilometers shoot out blasts similar to the one that comes from my pistol. As I stare up I see what they're shooting at. Compared to our ships they seem like hand me downs, all beat up and old. I move onwards with other me.
"What should I do?" I called out to him
"Kill anything that doesn't look like a human." he responds After 3 more minutes of running I asked the other thing that was on my mind
"Where are we going?"
"The presidents office. We're going to evacuate to another planet till this blows over." As he says this the ship I saw over head rips in two, flames filling the air. Screams erupt around us as people try to escape the falling debris. Gufujagin ships dart towards the ground. With renewed vigor we set of to the office, several minutes later I hear the sound of the first piece of the ship crashing down behind us, as my mind turns to the poor souls on the ship, a shot buzzes past me, I turn around and see 3 6 foot figure with grey scales, in their hands an assault rifle made from a similar material of my gun. I take a knee swing my gun around and fire, It completely misses them but alerts other me, who kneels besides me and open fire. During the fire fight a stray shot hits my shoulder, pain burst from it and spreads around my body I scramble around the corner and check it out. Thankfully the shot was only glancing and it was cauterized by the bullet I look at the battery of the gun a green 87% flashed up at me. I round the corner, kneel, take aim, breathe, and fire. I manage to hit them directly in their chest, other me guns down a second one. We share a look and move to opposite sides of the street and move up, the Gufujagin seeing us surround him drops his gun and puts his hands up. Before I can even blink, other me strolls up raises his gun and kill them point blank. Shocked I stared at other me, seeing this stare he answered my unasked question.
"In their culture that gesture is them calling for a quick death." other me explained. I dubiously nodded and picked up one of their weapons, on it a yellow 42% flashed. I took out the battery from my pistol and swapped it with the one in the rifle. We took of to the office once again. When we were but 5 minutes away other me rolled his ankle falling badly onto his hand.
"You go ahead tell them where I am, They'll send someone back for me"
"What if a Gufujagin finds you?"
"I can defend myself" he said patting his gun. I nodded and ran towards the office. When I rounded the corner the two guards raised their guns at me.
"Drop your weapons! Get on the ground." Confused I complied. The guards cuffed me and dragged me into the office. They dropped me in a bundle in front 5 or 6 people.
"We found Vince sir, he just walked straight up to us" the guard said. One of the people surrounding me, I assume the president, walks up to me and stares my straight in the eyes and asks
"Where are you from?" still confused I tell him the whole story up to this point.
"That son of a bitch" he muttered "you two uncuff this man and give him his weapons, make him lead you to where Vince is" instantly the guards comply and within minutes we're marching back to where I saw other me last. When we finally arrive at the spot, we found a note on the rubble, as I bent down to read it I realized it was gibberish, at the same time two shots rang out and the guards dropped. I spun my gun around and I spot him slowly walking towards me.
" You tried to kill me" I shout, fury building inside me.
"You finally realized huh? I lied from the beginning. I nuked the Gufujagin. They're here for me, the president didn't realize till to late. Thank god you came, now I can just kill you and take your place. It'll be too easy." he said with a smile "just need to use this and I'm golden" he said waving a portal machine. I raised my rifle and fired, the shots going wild.
"You wont get that lucky." he said with a smile, before a piece of the ship crushed him. Shocked I slowly approached the body, at his feet lay the machine, quickly I snatched it up and activated it. I jumped through the portal. As I emerged on the other side I stared at the gun for a minute or so before googling the governments number.
