I do remember it like it was just yesterday. His bright blue eyes, his dark brown hair, the deep dimples on both sides of his cheeks, his strong greek nose that looked like a mountain I would have climbed in my youth. A fifty five year old story that all the nurses have heard over and over again.
"Mrs. Stevens, your son is here to see you." Called nurse Carrie, she had light blonde hair and green blue eyes that shimmered like diamonds and emeralds in the sunshine.
"Yeah alright..." I sighed, my idiot son shoved me into a nursing home on my 70th birthday. He was running short on money and wanted to sell my house and all my possessions. How did I ever raise such a greedy boy.
"Jeremy." I greeted him. I didn't even bother to look at him, my eyes trained on my knitting needles as the weaved through the yarn.
"Mother. Are you really still mad at me? It's been four years get over it." He replied exasperated. I glared at him, he thought he was hot stuff, with the money he made from selling my property. I didn't even get to choose what I wanted to keep, anything he couldn't sell or couldn't profit from he either threw away or let me keep it. I was left with the pictures of my family a few garments and my wedding dress.
"No Jeremy, I'm not going to get over it. You visit once in a blue moon, you never let me see my grandkids and you sold MY house. Mine, not yours Jeremy." I told him angrily, setting down my needles roughly in my lap.
"Oh, Mother, you were going to give me the house anyways, it was written in your will." He replied snarkily. I grinned wide, the wrinkles on my face deepening as I did so.
"I was going to, I was also going to give you everything else." I said. "But Mr. Darley stopped by last week and helped me change it to my grandkids." Jeremy's eyes widened in surprise, then narrowed in anger.
"Mother! Are you serious?!" He bellowed, spit spraying from his lips like a hose."The kids don't deserve it! Me and Jessica need that money! You're going to change it back." He threatened. All I did was smile at him, that greedy boy... How did I ever give birth to such a thing...

The argument between me and Jeremy escalated so far that security had to escort him out of the premises. Served him right. I ate dinner alone in my room that night, taking the spoon and eating the last little bit of butterscotch pudding from the cup. I sighed exhausted, I was tired of fighting with my son about money, and I always wondered what would have happened if I had said yes to my first marriage proposal. From a man who was far better than the dead beat I married. The nurse had come and collected my tray and came back later to help me get to sleep. She walked me over to the bed and helped me climb into it. She pulled the blankets over me and wished me a good night and a wonderful day the next morning before turning off the lights and leaving. I sat in my bed for a few minutes, just looking at the ceiling. Eventually my eyes shut and my brain took me back to somewhere I had not been to in fifty five years...

The babbling of a brook and the slight gusts of wind that would rustle the leaves in the forest. It was a frequent for teens to go and party or explore. 1968, the summer of my first love. Thomas Bellock, the most attractive and desired man in our town a true gentleman who always went through with trying to woo the women in our town. Though it was all nice and playful, he made all the girls gush over him, some married, some not, some old, some young. It didn't matter who you were, if Thomas saw a woman, he would court her. I felt a hand grasp mine and looked up. Thomas was looking down at me, a sweet smile plastered on his handsome face, his dimples were so deep that if you filled them with water, you could bathe in it.
"Roberta, has anyone ever told you that your hair is the color of hot chocolate on a snowy sunday evening?" He asked, I blushed slightly.
"No, thomas, your the only one." My hair had long faded to gray and my eyes were wrinkled and baggy, the only one who still though I was beautiful was Thomas.
"Really, that's a surprise to me..." He said running his finger through a lock of my hair. "Roberta," He started. "Roberta lets run away together, just you and me, we'll be like Anne Marie and Cal!" He exclaimed, looking at me with those diamond eyes of his.
"Oh Thomas, I do I really do! But my father, he'd never-" He put his finger to my lips to shush me.
"Your father doesn't get a say in this Roberta, you're nineteen! He can't control you any longer!" He told me, his eyes begging me to join him. I had rejected him in the past. The same place, time and look in his eyes. He left anyways when I had rejected him and I ended up marrying Johnathan, the town alcoholic because of my father's pressure to get married and have kids. But now, I see this as an opportunity, a chance to rewrite my past mistakes.
"Yes Thomas! Yes I will come with you!" I told him, grabbing both of his hands in mine. His eyes lit up with happiness, he drove me to my house and had me pack my things. My father wasn't home but my mother was. I told her everything and she respected my decision, telling me to write he letters to keep her updated. I kissed her goodbye and put my belongings in the trunk of his car.
"Ready for a new beginning?" He asked starting the car.
"Thomas, I have been ready for fifty five years..." I told him as we started towards the sunset.

The nurses called my son, informing him of what happened last night while I slept.
"She passed away peacefully in her sleep sir, she looked so happy and peaceful." The nurse told him. My son was angry but he could do nothing. He got what he deserved and he could never yell at me to get his way ever again.
