"Nerd!" He says while walking past me.
"I'm not a nerd, I'm just reading Romeo and Juliet!" I call back to him, but he just smirks.
"So... how's your book." He asks. We're sitting in the back of his truck, looking at the stars. We have burgers and Sprites with a little bit of lemonade mixed in.
"It's good. It's about star-crossed lovers who are from rival families. There told they can never love. One of them gets sick and nearly dies. The doctors proclaim her dead, but she isn't. Her lover kills himself so that he won't have to be alone with her. When she wakes up and finds out he killed himself, she killed herself."
"Would you kill yourself if I died?" He asked.
I pause. There's the answer he wants, and what I want to answer.
"Would you?" I ask instead.
"I would. But you never answered the question."
"Well, if you will, I will," I tell him.
"Promise?" He holds out his pinky finger. I take it and shake it vigorously.
"Promise," I say.
"Romeo and Juliet is so overrated." His friend says.
"It sounds interesting." He responds.
"What are you a nerd? Go hang out with them and we'll see how long you last." His other friend says.
"I love you so much." He whispers into my ear. I want to squirm, his breath tingling the back of my neck.
"I love you."
"Promise me, that if anything happens to me... you'll still love me." He says.
"I already promised," I tell him confused.
"Promise me again." He says.
"I promise," I whisper, holding out my pinky. His pinky intertwines with mine and I could stay like that forever.
"Yo, did you hear what happened?" His friend says. I'm panicked. Where is he?
"No, what?" His other friend says.
"Bro got cancer, the doctors are giving him a few months, give or take."
I stiffen. I raise my hand desperately needing to leave.
"Yes?" the teacher asks me.
"I need to go to the restroom!" I practically scream.
"Go ahead," The teacher says.
"Why wouldn't you tell me!" I scream into the phone.
"I couldn't. I can't do that to you." He whispers back.
"Promise me you still love me." He asks. His voice is filled with sadness.
"Of course I love you. I forever will, till the world ends." I say back.
The months pass. The months have passed, and he's gone.
Now I look over the edge of the bridge, wondering if the impact of the fall would kill me.
"I promised." I say to myself.
