My story begins in a small town in Alabama particularly at a high school, you're probably thinking that the guy with big bulging muscles and nice brown hair in a joggers suit whose surrounded by a other guys like him and attractive girl sitting at a crowded lunch table,a jock is what you would call a person like that. However, that person is not me. I am the skinny nerd with glasses in a in black outfit with black hair sitting at the lonely lunch. My name is James Monroe. For most people high school is the best years of their lives, however for me I wouldn't call it that. I remember that day when I first came to that place, it was a hot summer day as I walked into this building. I placed my things in my locker and grabbed the things that I required for my class then headed toward my class.
I entered the classroom of my first period class as it soon became crowded with more and more people of my age. I watched them walk into the room in many shapes and sizes. They all talked to each other, but if I'm to be honest it didn't really lead to what I imagined. You see I have lived my life up to this point as I would live it for the next three years alone. Before that certain point in my life I remember living among my family, and in some cases it's nice. However, my life takes place in a world where the opposite happens. My family never actually saw me as they were concerned with the ongoings of my cousins. I honestly thought I would spend my entire life alone until one fateful day.
I was sitting at my lunch table alone as usual, but it would take an unexpected turn of event when a scrawny nerd with black hair in jeans and a green sweater with glasses sat in front of me. He said ''Hi I'm Max, Max Jackson'' I responded with ''Ummmmmm..........................I'm James,James Monroe'' I was nervous.
''I've seen you sitting around here everyday I thought you could use a friend or at least some to talk to''he said "I suppose being alone doesn't really bother me'' I said ''Well to be honest I could use someone to talk to as well my friends are all in other class periods what about where are your friends"he asked me. "I don't really have any friends" I said seeing how alone I was he gave me an offer that would change the way I thought about my life.
"Well I can help with that, later today there's gonna be an interesting meeting for people who want to join the fencing club I think you should join''he said as he handed me a flyer then walked off. I spent the rest of the day looking at that flyer thinking about what he said to me, causing something to just snap in me,so I decided to take advantage of his offer.
Later that day after school I walked into the gym why laid a blue mat I then saw a large African American man in a white shirt in red pants he was the gym teacher. As I fully entered the room I soon noticed Max walking towards me "Hey bud it's nice to know you took you up on my offer what made you change your mind"he asked ''I couldn't tell yea''I said. The tryouts soon began we all began to put on white fencing gear ''Alright let's get started'' the coach said the tryouts began with me and a girl with brown hair in the same gear as me we soon began clashing with our swords. However,I was left with a small problem I honestly had no idea what I was doing which forced me to improvise as used defensive moves. When she came close enough I lunged forward, twist my wrist over causing her to drop her sword. I then struck in the chest winning me the match. At that moment I felt excited as I won.
''Nice job newbe I'm Sarah,Sarah Freeman''she said as she held her hand, I reached and shook her hand ''I'm James,James Monroe''I said ''Well well nice work kid"the coach said. After many hours of trying with every match I could feel my skills sharpening when it was all said and done. The members of the team were me, Max,and Sarah with me being the weakest on the team of course. We began to practice everyday after school more and more. I finally felt like I was really connecting with people. Sarah even gave me tips and advice on my stances as well as how to adjust my foot work in combat with every touch she gave me. It was as if I felt an intense heat shoot straight through my entire body. After months of training we finally went to our very first fencing tournament. I remember that so clearly it was really the first time I ever felt nervous. Sometimes I can still feel my legs shaking. I was the first to start it off in the opening match. I didn't think I could do it. I was on the verge of walking out.
However, my teammates gave me the encouragement I needed in order to confront my opponent. All it took was a simple hand on both of my shoulders. I entered the ring and drew my sword then my first match began. I started off relentlessly dodging the attacks of my opponent while at the same time searching for an opening, but with my opponent completely unwilling to provide me with said opening I was forced to go on the offensive.
I began to equally clash with my opponent's aggressive attacks. That's when we came together in one final clash. I then used this clash to forcefully force my opponent's weapons to the side allowing me to strike him in the chest winning myself and my team the duel. There are many things in my life I will never forget, but I will never forget the overwhelming happiness I felt that day when I walked over to my team with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes as I hugged them.
The next match involved Max who was victorious in battle. Honestly it didn't even last that long, that day we went out for pizza to celebrate victory. It truly was a night that was filled with laughter and happiness. We went on to win many more tournaments with every battle simply by holding the sword I felt my skills being constantly sharpened.
The three of us would even spend time outside of our fencing team becoming the best of friends. I truly began to feel happy I had all I ever needed, good grades,an activity I could take pride in, and I had two best friends. It was truly the best time of my life. The end of the year soon came.
We soon split up,but we all promised each other that we would write to each other. We may have split up,but never will I forget my best friends as they have so much to me so much, and I still feel the connections I made with them everytime I practice my fencing.
