Her red eye was burning. She couldn't stay on the ground long. The grass beneath her was already smouldering, each scale hot enough to ignite the dry plants with a gentle touch. Tern leapt into the sky with a resigned beat of her enormous wings, catching the breeze effortlessly, the coolness of the air enveloping her. She could stretch without either turning everything around her to flames or ice. She shook out her neck, the spines clinking gently against each other. The land dropped out beneath her as she rose on a thermal created by her own fiery wings, climbing higher and higher as the endless blue became the only thing she could see. Tern loved flying. She could pretend she belonged in the mountains, away from the stares of others, the cold cave she slept in, her own wretched scales- the sky really was the limit, and she was prepared to get to the very edge of it. A hawk soared just above her, golden eyes raking the earth far below them, wings never moving as it glided through the air. They flew together for a few heartbeats, perfect synchronization of dragon and bird. And then the moment snapped. Tern expertly twisted upside-down, snatching the hawk from flight. With a quick, smooth motion, she tossed it into her mouth before it burnt up. With a satisfied flick of her tail, she watched the feathers fall to the ground. She felt a small twinge of regret- she had a soft spot for hawks, but she had to eat, didn't she? She gazed out to the horizon, and noticed a dot moving towards her. She blinked her two-toned eyes, confused. There shouldn't be anyone anywhere near the edge of the Kingdom. She quickly banked and landed inside a cave she'd hid out in often, crouching close to the stony floor. A talon brushed a piece of wheat forcing it's way out of the rock and it momentarily glowed orange before merrily flaming away, flickering a bright yellow red. She hissed. The fire would reveal her. She stamped it out, but the dot veered towards her cave. The fiery heat in her red eye suddenly guttered and her blue one began to feel cold. Almost instantly, a thin dusting of frost spread out from wherever the white scales contacted the ground. The dot gradually grew larger, and she took a deep breath, shrinking down. There was a click of claws and a clatter of spines, a glittering white dragon reaching out with a hope and yet sadness in their blue eyes, holding something shiny.
