Present Day
*pant* *pant*
”This can’t be happening! This seriously cannot be happening right now,” I say running as fast as I could as my ankle burned from the pain. “Everything was fine just a few minutes ago. I don’t understand what went wrong!”
I tried running back to the dorms when I realized that I no longer had my key with me. Everything I had was in that bag: my key, my notebooks, my wallet, my phone, my ID… EVERYTHING! I now had no way of getting into my room or practically anywhere else on campus and my ankle is killing me. I stop for a second at a bench near my dorm and roll up the fabric of my leggings to check my ankle. It was swollen-- definitely sprained. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do, especially if I can’t get into the dorm. As I try to process everything going on around me, I see a figure start to walk towards me. “Um… are you okay?” A gentle voice cooed. I clenched my jaw wondering if I should respond or not, I decided I should, “Who’s there?!”
Out from the shadows emerged a tall and lanky guy with bronze-colored skin who looks about the same age as me. He walks up to me slowly and rubs the back of his head and looks down at his feet, “Uh, my name is Caleb. We have psychology together, I saw you and figured I’d ask if you were okay.” I relax a bit and try to get a better look at him from the bench.
‘You know, he’s lowkey kind of cute.’
I shake my head, ‘focus!’ I look up at Caleb, “I guess that’s how you could explain my position. I was at the store and…” Tears slowly start welling up in my eyes and I fight to hold them back. I blink them back and finish what I was saying, “Long story short, I was robbed, the guy pushed me and I fell and hurt my ankle.” Caleb’s eyes widen with shock and confusion and he stutters as he tried to formulate his sentence.
“Y-You were robbed!? Why d-didn’t you t-tell the police? You need to go to the health center- no, the hospital,” He starts rambling off frantically. ‘It’s actually cute that he’s worried about me, it’s weird that he’s being like that to me.’ I was so shocked that I started laughing silently. Caleb gave me a puzzled look, “What’s funny?” ‘Oh no, I made him mad.’
“Sorry,” I quickly stand and turn before I start walking as fast as I can with my injured ankle to the health center, not bothering to look back when Caleb yelled for me to wait. ‘I can’t believe I forgot who I was talking to.’ I don’t have my phone anymore so I had to hope the center would be open at all, luckily, it was.
There, the nurse on duty quickly patched me up with little to no evasive questions as to how I got it. ‘I really can’t deal with all of this right now, it’s too much as is. It’s going to be hell trying to explain this to the police anyway. Maybe I’m just prone to getting shit thrown at me all the time.’ My mind continued to wander until my appointment was over, at that point, it was almost 9 and I still didn’t know how I was getting into my room or how I was going to contact Josie to tell her about all this crazy shit. Student services wouldn’t open back up until tomorrow morning and I’m really not sure what I should do, I guess I should call the police… but with what phone you know?
I start what feels like a walk of shame to my dorm as the cool air of the night blows and chills my bones, ‘I knew I should’ve worn a jacket today.’ As my shoes knock against the pavement, I notice how pretty the campus is at night. I never go out much because of how people look at me when I walk by, the stares make me uncomfortable and I’m not sure how to ever deal with them, or people in general for that matter. I start to dwell on how much my weight has impacted my life, I literally can’t do anything without a look of disgust in my wake.
When I make it to the dorm, I bump into the most unexpected person leaving. “Hey wait, don’t close the door!” I shout at the towering mass in all black. He grimaces, “Watch it shorty, who died and made you boss.” He let the door go anyways and started walking away, I managed to catch it before it closed. “You’re wack as fuck for that dude,” I shout after him. The man stops and turns around before rushing towards me.
I try to quickly step back behind the door but he caught it and trapped me between him and the wall inside the warm heat of the hallway. “Now, you really think I’m going let some random chick call me out like that? And who are you anyway?” He sneered. “M-My n-n-name is Gem,” I tried to stop my stutter but all of my words seemed to fall out at once. I clench my jaw and attempt to steady my voice, “Who the hell are you?”
“Niro.”
