The streets after midnight often gave an unsettling ambience.
Amber street lights glimmered on the roads, a few flickering on the edge of diminishing. Except for some litter being dragged around by the wind, the roads were empty as a ghost town, plus there was a chill in the air - it was almost like the setup for something sinister to take place.
These lights have seen better days…why hasn’t there been anyone repairing them? Perhaps I should send an email to the government to notify them about this?
Standing at the far end of the back alley near Marble Road, I observed the environment nearby and pondered.
Nah, on second thought, I don’t wanna play the part of some ‘good, responsible citizen’. Plus this government doesn’t deserve such an act from me.
“I love the chilly midnight breeze.”
Black shirt, black suit skirt, black tights, black heels…if not for the street lights, my eyes would never have been able to detect the person speaking, dressed in black from head to toe. Kou’s azure hair waved like silk in the air along the gentle wind blowing in her direction.
She’s so pretty.
I could stand and watch her all day; however, it was not the time for that.
In fact, the way she’d dressed was my idea. I feared that Kou would be a potential target after I successfully lured the ‘vampires’ out, and having her camouflaged in the dark was the best strategy for her to stay off their radar. Nonetheless, given my lack of prior experience in handling ‘vampire’-related cases and relevant knowledge on them, I was not entirely sure if this would pan out the way I expected.
It’s fine, they ain’t got nothing on me! I can fix whatever goes down.
“Say…isn’t the way you’re dressed tonight a little eye-catching?” Kou asked, pointing at my attire. “Also there’s a thing I’ve been wanting to ask you for some time: Why does your hair colour shift from sakura pink to golden blonde whenever you perform magic?”
“To lure the prey, of course.” I replied.
The snow-white velvet cape I showed to Kou before hung around my shoulders, and underneath, I wore a laced white top, a red pleated skirt, black tights, and heels, with the Sceptre of Luna held firmly in my palm. My outfit was undeniably conspicuous in the dark night, which was an attempt to draw them to me.
“Opposites attract,” as the saying goes, was also the case for magicae attributes - the light was attracted to the dark and vice versa. As a light mageka, my powers countered the dark’s, even while the two attracted one another.
As to why my hair turned golden yellow, it was actually a result of my magical energy radiating through my hair, and it served the purposes of being both conspicuous and attracting dark forces.
It was not the first time for Kou to see me in this state, but it was indeed my first time explaining the logic behind to her.
With the use of this distinguishable outfit and magical energy of the light attribute, plus the provoking light bullet I sent off in the evening, I was certain the ‘vampires’ would make their appearance. Rather, this midnight hunt would turn into a colossal waste of effort if they did not show up.
Though the fee for travelling from Kennedy Town by tram was not expensive, I still don’t want it to go to waste!
So please, show up already!
“Will this just be a wild goose chase in the end?” Kou asked after listening to me explain the colour change of my hair. It seemed she was starting to feel bored from standing by in the same spot waiting for our target.
“It won’t, trust me.” As I finished my sentence, my senses alerted me to something. I immediately lowered my voice and warned Kou, “Shh, keep your voice down.”
I could sense a flow of dark magical force not far away from us, and it was gradually approaching our location.
Heh, gotcha.
I waved the sceptre to stealthily create a magical barrier that isolated us from others, then whispered to Kou, “Get to safety, our prey’s here.”
Seemingly understanding my words, she nodded and quickly fell back to somewhere out of my sight.
Soon after she left, a grim figure made its entrance in the back alley. It was of the height of a regular human - but it had a pair of uncanny crimson eyes. Both of its arms were hanging towards the ground as it walked at a slow pace. The way it kept gasping for air through its mouth was loud enough for me to hear from afar.
“Who are you?” I raised the Sceptre of Luna at it.
The figure did not respond. Instead, it kept treading towards me.
“I’m Luminosa the mageka. What’s your business coming to this place? Don’t blame me for getting rough if you stay silent!”
With my statement articulated loud and clear, I declared war against the figure.
About fifty feet away, it suddenly widened its jaws and charged at me with a bellow of rage.
“Prism Shield!”
I knocked the ground with the tip of my sceptre at once, forming a golden light wall which shielded me from getting bitten. I then made a few hops and landed on the rooftop of a tenement building next to the back alley, observing the creature below relentlessly trying to tear down the wall with its jaws.
Judging by its aura, this was the exact same type of dark magical energy that was detected during the investigation.
They were Dark Creatures beyond the shadow of a doubt. But at the current stage, a decisive clue on the sub-attribute that it belonged to was lacking.
Unexpectedly, the ‘vampire’ successfully made an opening in the wall. With a fierce stare, it boosted itself upwards with a big leap.
Who said you could climb up?
“Silver Moon, be the light that purifies darkness. Moonlight Sphere!”
As the ‘vampire’ jumped up, I took a leap midair, where a couple moon-like spheres emerged in front. They tracked and attacked it one after another. At first it was able to dodge two light spheres by hopping between two tenement buildings sideways, yet it fell into the attack range of the last sphere. Knocked heavily down to the ground, it groaned, but the fighting strength in it remained.
From its reaction, apparently light was its weakness, but moonlight seemed to be a less powerful threat to it.
“Let’s finish you with this move.” I landed on the ground. “Moonlight Spear!”
