Many months of my summer vacation passed before I could blink it was time for me to return for my sophomore year. I walked upon with a powerful sense of happiness as it was plain to see by the smile on my face. For the entire summer besides practicing for my fencing skills I prepared myself to once again see my two best friends again. However I'm afraid that no amount of preparation could prepare me for what I saw once I entered the building. When I entered I saw Max and Sarah standing together by the lockers. I began to walk up to them,but as I approached I saw them romantically embrace each other as they kissed each other while holding hands. I stopped and rather did what I was so anxious to do all this time I simply walked away in complete and total despair.
That feeling I had before I met them, the feeling of total darkness as if a black gaping hole opened where my heart used to be, gave me a sense of hopefulness instantly returned with a vengeance. For the entirety of that day I did absolutely nothing besides think about what I saw and wonder how it happened. Once again I was finally left alone as it was,later that day after school I walked into the gym to practice my fencing skills. The moment I grabbed the sword I felt nothing,but a rising intense energy of anger and hatred. It was as if my entire body was being burned by an intense incinerating fire that quickly exploded into an inferno.
I walked up to the practice dummy as I held up my sword. I looked up at the dummy with intense hatred,but all I could really see was them. I quickly attacked it over and over again with anger. My technique was obviously off rhythm and sloppy,but I didn't care I was too consumed with anger. After about nearly half an hour I started to get a bit out of breath,but I would've gone on longer until a hand grabbed my wrist.
''That's enough"the voice said I looked behind me to see the coach, I looked at him with an intense feeling of rage as my face tightened and my teeth clenched together. "LET GO OF ME RIGHT NOW"I screamed quickly and took back my wrist "What has gotten into you"he asked me "Nothing it's fine"I said as I walked back towards the dummy. "It's because of Max and Sarah I remember seeing you three last year it was like there was nothing that could separate you,but now their dating"he said while I clenched my sword tighter "You're not angry James you're sad, sad that you feel that there's no longer any room for you"he said. "Perhaps that's true,but it doesn't matter anymore does it and no one cares"I said not long after that Sarah walked into the gym. I used to think seeing her would have brought me joy,but now I don't feel anything anymore "Hey James it's nice to see yea again"she said as she walked towards me I simply just looked away while closing my eyes and walked back to the dummy.
"Did we do something wrong? ''she asked as I began to train properly against the dummy this time. "We haven't seen you all day and you haven't said anything to us that's not like you"she asked. I honestly still felt nothing, nothing as her words passed straight through me as I continued to practice. I soon heard her take a deep breath ''Look I know we should have told you about us,and Max just forgot to tell you we’re just.................................we're sorry James we're sorry''she said,but I continued to ignore.
However, finally she had enough of my silence then walked in front of me and grabbed me by the wrist. ''DAMN IT WILL YOU PLEASE PUT THE SWORD DOWN AND TALK TO ME''she screamed,I finally open my mouth ''What's the point of talking if you already know the reason it doesn't matter I'll just fade away like I did before I met you guys"I said as I lowered my head in sadness and despair. "No you're not I'm not gonna let you"she said as she walked over and picked up a sword.
"What are you doing"I asked as I turned around to her. "Come on I want you to show me how much you've been training"she said "Do I have a choice"I asked as I began to smile. "Nope"she said as she began to smile, we began to start our duel. In the past I was never really able to match her speed,but this time after my long extensive training I was able to match her in speed. We dueled for at least an hour then we both agreed to call it a draw. We then sat around drinking water.
"Look I'm sorry we should have told you about us,but don't think you're gonna fade away you're my best friend and the same goes for Max"Sarah said "Thank you Sarah"I said as we hugged each other. We looked over out of the corner of our eyes to see Max standing their "Hey buddy"I said "Hey Sarah sorry I couldn't make it I just had to do something yea ready to go"he asked "Sure"she said as she walked out with him "Hey James long time"he said as they left leaving me to become completely confused. I later returned home only to hear a knock on my door. The moment I sat down on the couch I rose up thinking that it was weird, for my parents were on a long business trip. I walked up to the door then opened which would possibly become the biggest shock of the day as I saw Sarah.
"Hey is there something wrong"I asked "I'm sorry I just kind of wanted to hangout with a friend"she said I became instantly confused "What about Max"I asked "He said he had to take care of something"she said "Ok then sure come on in we can watch a movie''I said as I let her in. We spent most of that entire night sitting around watching movies while laughing and talking together. Later that night I walked her home then hugged her goodnight.That next day I walked into school I saw Max grabbing books out of his locker I ran up to him "Hey Max"I said.
He turned around with an annoyed look on his face "Listen bud I'm sorry about yesterday,but Sarah really gave my head a shake, but she was good at that with both of us wasn't she"I said as I began to smile. However, even while I was speaking I could tell his attention was not focused on me; it was as if he didn't even care about what I had to say. It wasn't until the jocks,cheerleaders,and other more public people entered the building "Yeah James I get it listen I gotta go we'll talk later''he said as I saw him walk towards them. As I observed him interacting with it was as if he was allowing himself to be picked on as he allowed them to hit him, call him names that should be considered offensive, and did chores for them.
Later that day at fencing practice it was once again me and Sarah "Hey where's Max"I asked while we practiced "Oh he said something about being the waterboy for the football team"she said her news brought a sense of confusion causing me to become distracted "Really why would he do that"I asked "I don't know"she said as she quickly took control of the duel and struck me in the chest "But if I were you I'd focus on not loosing against me"she said while smiling. "Let's go"I said as I smiled back as we restarted our duel. We fenced for an hour and neither of us were ever able to find an opening.
When we began to pack up our gear I became curious "So are yea busy tonight"I asked "Yeah me and Max were gonna go on a date tonight what about you"she asked "Yeah well I plan to try to work on my car,so if you ever have any free time I could always use some help"I said. She began to smile while she hugged me "I'll try to keep that in mind"she said as she walked away. Later that evening I worked in the shop working on my car. I soon rolled from underneath it in order to cool myself from insinuating heat. That's when I heard a loud knock on the shop door I looked over to see Sarah "Hey what's up"I asked "I came to see if you still needed any help on your car"she said "I thought you and Max had a date"I responded "Well our date was a party with those public people,but I didn't wanna go so he went without me"she said "Well ok well I could always use an extra set of hands"I said.
For many hours we worked on my car and by working together we were able to fix up my car,but by the time we were finished it soon began to rain. "Oh man it's about to rain I should head home"she said as she began to run off until I stopped her "Wait hold on don't go it's raining and late why don't you just stay over I can drive you home later"I said. She began to smile "Yeah sure I don't mind"she said, we sat in my home for many hours just talking and watching TV for many hours until the rain stopped.
"It finally stopped raining"she said "Yeah come on I'll drive you home"I said, I drove her home,but before she stepped she asked a favor of me. "Hey can you pick me up tomorrow"she asked "You want me to drive you to school"I asked "Yeah it'll be fun"she said "Ok sure"I said as she smiled and hugged me. That next morning I picked her up Sarah and drove her to school when she stepped she saw Max and ran over to him. I walked over to my locker to grab some books for the first period until I heard a loud voice from down the hall "HEY MONROE ''the loud voice said. I looked up to see that it was Max walking down the hall followed by the public people with some of them using their phones to record "Oh hey bud"I said as I smiled and they began crowding around us. However,he did not return the smile instead he responded with anger "So you think it's a good idea to drive my girl up here"he said in anger "Yeah she asked I was just doing a friend of mine a favor it was really no trouble"I said in all calmness.
When I raised my fist for a fist bump he soon pushed me down to the ground then grabbed me by the collar "STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM HER"he screamed then pushed me back down and walked away along with everyone else as some of the jocks hit him in the back of his head. I soon saw a hand reach out and I looked up to see Sarah. ''Here let me help you up''she said ''Thanks''I said as I grabbed her hand and she helped me up. That was the last time I saw Max,for a while I would not see him again for months. While me and Sarah continued our fencing practice and went to play at the tournaments with just the two of us. We would go on to spend much time together as Max was busy with a many assortment of things. It was as if Max had disappeared from our group to be with those who didn't even appreciate him as a person.
Unfortunately, as time continued it's March things really didn't get better especially on one faithful day Me and Sarah were practicing in the gym until Max ran in completely consumed in rage. ''HEY WHAT THE HELL DID I TELL YOU MONROE STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM HER''he screamed as I stood simply at a complete loss for words. "OH YOU SO WANNA TRY AND DODGE THE QUESTION"he screamed as he picked up a sword "WELL WHY DON'T YOU TRY TO DODGE THIS"he screamed,but all I did was take a deep and breathed "Max I'm not gonna fight my friend"I said as I put down my sword "WE ARE NOT FRIENDS WHY WOULD I GIVE A LOSER LIKE YOU THE TIME OF DAY''he screamed as he ran towards me preparing to strike me down with sword. I closed my eyes to prepare for the attack,but I soon heard another sword clash with him. I opened my eyes to see that I was defended by Sarah "Leave him alone"she said "OH SO NOW YOU'RE DEFENDING HIM''he screamed. "AT LEAST HE ISN'T CHILDISH ENOUGH TO FIGHT YOU"she screamed "The guys were right about you, you aren't true to me you were never true to me''he said.
"WHO THOSE GUYS WHO MAKE FUN OF YOU ON A DAILY BASIS THEIR NOT YOUR FRIENDS THEIR YOU'RE BULLIES THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT YOU ACTUALLY LET THEM MAKE FUN OF YOU"she screamed "IT IS NOT LIKE THAT AND YOU KNOW IT"he screamed "LOOK AT YOU JAMES CONSIDERS YOU TO BE ONE OF HIS BEST FRIENDS AND YOU TREAT HIM LIKE CRAP AND HE TREATS ME FAR BETTER THAN YOU TREAT ME YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED YOU ABANDONED US TO DO WHAT.................TO FEEL LIKE YOU'RE COOL''she screamed. "I AM COOL"he screamed "WHY DON'T YOU BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF YOU NEVER TRULY LIKED ME YOU JUST WANTED TO LOOK COOL IN FRONT THOSE PACK OF JERKS''she screamed ''YOU'RE RIGHT THAT'S THE ONLY REASON WHY I ASKED YOU''he screamed.
The moment he said that there was an intense moment of silence as his response shocked all of us Sarah then began to attack him while he did a terrible job defending himself it was clear that he had not been practicing his skills were dulled. Her attacks forced him to fall off the mat causing him to fall on his back with Sarah holding a sword to his face "We're done don't you ever come near us again''she said as she began to cry.
Max stood back up and walked out. I slowly walked towards her "Sarah I am so sorry if there's anything I can................."I said,but I was cut off when she hugged me. A soft connective silence filled the room as we stood there and hugged, later that night I drove her home "Are you gonna be ok?"I asked "I think I will thank you James"she said as she leaned over and kissed me on the cheek then stepped out. I soon returned home with the mindset to sleep and forget about this horrible day as I laid on the bed,but I soon heard a loud knocking on my door. I walked up to the door and when I opened it to my surprise to see Sarah standing in my doorway. We looked into each other's eyes without saying any words,because we both knew that there was nothing else to say.
We then shared a slow,deep, and passionate kiss as I grabbed her by the waist as I could feel her fingers running through my hair. We walked inside and into my bedroom while still kissing each other she went on to take off her shirt while I took off mine. We both stared at each other's topless bodies then continued kissing. We soon saw the coach walking down the hall with his face consumed in despair "Hey coach what's wrong"I asked "It's Max"he said.
