Chapter 29: The Egg
The Egg by Andy Weir is a thought-provoking short story about a man who dies and meets God. In the story, the man learns that he has been reincarnated many times before and that all human beings who have ever lived and will ever live are incarnations of him. God explains that the entire universe was created as an egg for the main character, all of humanity, and once he has lived every human life ever, he will be born as a God. The story explores the idea that every time you victimize someone, you are victimizing yourself and that every act of kindness you do, you do to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was or will be experienced by you. The idea is that we are all connected and that our actions have consequences not only for others but also for ourselves. The man is surprised to learn that he has been everyone from Abraham Lincoln to Adolf Hitler. The man is next to be reincarnated as a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.
One of the main themes is the interconnectedness of all human beings. The story suggests that every person who has ever lived and will ever live is an incarnation of the same being. This means that every action we take has consequences not only for others, but also for ourselves.
