“Pirouette, Camri! Pirouette!” my instructor calls from the fence.
I coax my horse into a spin, balancing perfectly centered.
I glance around the arena, taking in every corner. The indoor arena was quite large, used for training as well as competitions. Off to the left, was an aisle of which horse stalls lined the walls. On the right was an exit to the parking lot. The air smelled beautifully of dirt and horses.
Perfect.
It almost let me forget about everything.
Almost.
“Focus, Camri!” the instructor reminds me.
“Mr. Kenneth?” a petty voice sounds from the horse stall.
“Yes, Pricilla?” my instructor turns to face Princilla.
The queen of pettiness. Trust me.
All she cares about is herself.
And boys.
And makeup.
You get the point.
“I have lost my brush. I believe someone may have taken it,” she shoots me a mean glance.
Like I would have ever thought of taking it.
“I’ll get you a new one,” Mr. Kenneth falls for her charm. “Keep working Camri, I’ll be right back.”
Yeah. Like next year.
I continue to practice the pirouette, trying to get it perfect in every way.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spot someone enter the barn and lean against the fence.
Well, this day got a whole lot more interesting.
Josh Scoff. The one. The only.
Josh starts to walk along the fence toward me. He hops over the fence in a fluid motion. I coax my horse to the opposite side of the arena, but Josh jumps out and grabs my horse. He pets along her neck to calm her down.
“I heard about what happened, Camri. I am so sorry.”
“Stalker,” I whisper under my breath.
“I just wanted you to know that the door is open. The folks would be totally good with you coming to stay with us.”
Seriously? I would never stay in the same house as him!
“No thanks. Got it taken care of.”
“At least let me take you out to dinner. To help take your mind off things.”
“Josh, please stop asking me!” I try to reign my horse away, but he has a grip on her head.
“Why do you say no before we ever go out?”
“Because we aren’t and will never be something! Now please let go,” I start to get stressed.
“What about me do you not like?” He resituates his grasp.
“You are a jerk and a spoiled brat,” A voice causes both of us look toward to the fence.
Logan jumps over the fence and makes his way toward us, “Copyright- Camri.”
“Oh. So, this is the reason you won’t go out me. Alright, how much?” Josh pulls out a wad of twenty dollar bills and starts to count them.
Logan looks up at me in a Is he serious? expression.
“We aren’t going to bargain over her,” Logan answers calmly.
“I’m sure you could use the money,” Josh looks up and notices Logan isn’t enticed. “Come on, man! You don’t deserve her.”
“From what I see right now, neither do you.”
“I am everything you can only dream of being!” Josh comments.
“No, you are everything I can dream of not being,” Logan grabs my horse’s head and pushes her away.
Josh tosses the money to the ground in anger and lunges at Logan, successfully punching him in the jaw. Logan falters back a few steps, but doesn’t attack Josh.
Josh tackles Logan to the ground. All I can do is watch as Josh gets Logan pinned on his back.
Logan sighs then presses his lips into a thin line. He brings up his feet, and connect them with Josh’s abdomen. Logan sends Josh sailing over his head. He is on his feet before Josh even hits the ground.
“Leave,” Logan commands.
Josh struggles to his feet, clutching his gut. “You’ll pay for this.” Josh turns toward me, “Camri, you can keep the money.” Josh limps toward the gate, and leaves the barn.
Logan turns and looks up at me, rubbing his jaw. “Is he always like that?”
“Kind of. Why are you here, anyway?” I hop off of the horses back, landing with a soft thud.
Logan reaches into his pocket and hands me my phone.
“Tesa didn’t want you to be gone without any form of communication. I’m leaving before I get into more trouble,” Logan turns toward the opposite door. “Dinner is at 5.”
I nod then lead my horse to the gate. Hesitating, I turn back to the money lying in a heap on the floor.
I decide to leave it.
