Balanced Love - Act 1: Scene 4

INT. BIRD ROOM - NIGHT

The background shows the sun setting to signal dinner time. The birds are eating their own food in their individual food bowls, and MOM is eating fried rice at the dinner table, which is to the right of the bird cages.

BLUEY

I'm still in denial that Angie is my girlfriend, that I have a girlfriend!

PEAR

I know, but aren't you hungry? Let's eat first.

BLUEY

I don't have much of an appetite when all I can think of is her.

MIKA

Pear, I have a question.

PEAR

(with his beak full of seeds)

What?! I'm eating. Can't you tell?

MIKA

Bluey, can I talk with you privately?

Bluey follows Mika into the other side of the bird room away from Pear.

MIKA

I wanted to ask Pear if he thinks about me all the time, but now I'm not so sure.

BLUEY

Hey, don't cry! I've been with him longer than you have, and trust me, he always puts food first. I'm his best friend, and he even bites me and ignores my hunger.

MIKA

I just don't know if he still loves me.

BLUEY

He does! He talks to me about you all the time, about your sweet personality, your perfect crest, your glistening eyes, you name it!

MIKA

Okay, I trust you. We've been good friends for four months.

The two birds walk back to Pear and Angie. Bluey looks at Mom, who is eating at the dinner table.

BLUEY

I want food! I want food!

Bluey flies to his mirror.

BLUEY (CONT'D)

Bubbles, do you want food, too? I can bring some over!

ANGIE

Mika, what's going on? Who's Bubbles?

MIKA

Oh, male birds tend to believe that the bird in the mirror is their "other" mate. For Bluey, he named her Bubbles, and for Pear, he named her Ava.

ANGIE

Are you ever jealous?

MIKA

Listen, I'll never know when they'll realize Bubbles and Ava aren't real.

ANGIE

So doesn't it bother you because their attention to you is cut short?

MIKA

Maybe it's because of my calm, laid-back personality but no.

ANGIE

So then, what do you do while they're busy?

MIKA

I'm pretty optimistic I'd say, so I like to think about the mirrors as a distraction so that I can go and steal some more food.

ANGIE

Is this why I haven't seen you fight him?

MIKA

Yep! Better to be safe than sorry!

ANGIE

Will the mates in the mirror replace us?

MIKA

Oh, no, there's no way. They're not even real! There's nothing to worry about.

ANGIE

Thanks! You're like a big sister to me even though I'm older!

Bluey flies over to Mom for food.

MOM

No, you can't have this, Bluey! There's unhealthy oil in this.

BLUEY

(speaking to humans)

Me want food!

Elizabeth runs to get Bluey, but it only causes him to climb down Mom's sweater and go on the dinner table.

PEAR

What's happening? Let her eat, Bluey!

MIKA

Pear, I think Bluey has officially gone insane after he finally got a girlfriend.

ANGIE

What? So all of this chaos is because of me?

MIKA

Don't think of it negatively. Think of it as he's extremely happy that you're here.

ANGIE

Well then, I wanna go join him in the fun!

Bluey runs toward everything on the table, but he especially wanted to eat Nutella.

ELIZABETH

No! That's like number one on the "do not eat" list!

Elizabeth quickly put her finger in front of Bluey to which he stepped up. She then ran to put him in the bird room.

BLUEY

Hey Angie, you wanna join tomorrow?

ANGIE

We're not going to be put inside our cages, right?

BLUEY

No promises. Humans have sneaky techniques and trick us into going in them. That's what I don't like about humans. Other than that, they're amazing!

ANGIE

I'll join.
