Balanced Love - Act 1: Scene 5

The sun is setting as it is dinnertime. DAD is in the kitchen, ELIZABETH is watching the birds, BLUEY and ANGIE are cleaning themselves in peace, and PEAR and MIKA are mindlessly eating.

DAD

I'll be cooking with oil in five minutes.

ELIZABETH

(panicking)

O-okay, let me put the birds away! Why is it so sudden? You know Angie has just recently been tamed.

DAD

Well, I'm hungry, and I want to fry something.

ELIZABETH picks up PEAR and MIKA together first and brings them to her bedroom, the right side of the stage.

PEAR

Do you know if there will be any hidden millet in her room?

MIKA

Nah, I highly doubt it. She's rarely in there anyway.

PEAR

True, she's only there to sleep at night.

MIKA

But I sure hope that there will be some interesting toys to play with or places to hide!

ELIZABETH picks up BLUEY in hopes to lure ANGIE over. She fails to, and ANGIE ends up flying around.

BLUEY

C'mon, Angie! Let's go! I promise you that it's safe! I'll be here with you.

ANGIE

She's in a rush making me rushed and not in a way where I feel like complying. What's so important that we all need to evacuate this room for anyway?

BLUEY

The smell of oil frying? Does that ring a bell at all?

ANGIE

No. My previous owners always let me smell the oil.

ANGIE flies down but keeps her distance from ELIZABETH's hand.

BLUEY

You don't feel uncomfortable?

ANGIE

I guess I've never really thought about it since I thought that everything that they were doing is for my own benefit.

BLUEY

Oh, man. I thought Elizabeth was being extra about everything, but it turns out that since I flew away two years ago, she became paranoid and very protective of everyone.

ANGIE

You didn't fly away on the first day she got you, right?

BLUEY

Ok, I admit. I kinda did, but it was because it was my first time going in a cage. Plus, I was surrounded by strangers!

ANGIE

How were your first few weeks in the new house?

BLUEY

After Elizabeth tamed me, she let me go on the kitchen table and drink her cereal milk.

ANGIE

What?! No way, aren't we, like, lactose intolerant?

BLUEY

We are, but she didn't know until after I took the first sip. She was a lot more willing then.

ELIZABETH brought BLUEY up first and then returned to the bird room to deal with ANGIE.

ELIZABETH

Angie, you have to go upstairs or at least in your cage!

ANGIE stares at her. BROTHER comes downstairs from his room.

ELIZABETH

Hey, can you help me put Angie back in her cage? Dad is gonna cook with oil soon.

BROTHER

Sure, where are the rest of the birds?

ELIZABETH

They're already upstairs.

BROTHER opens the top of ANGIE's cage and uses his hand to lure her in. He then closes the cage. ELIZABETH puts a table covering on her cage so that the oil won't enter her system too easily.

ELIZABETH

I'll need to train you more, okay? He'll be returning to university in a week.

ELIZABETH

Dad, you can cook now.

DAD

Took you long enough.

ELIZABETH goes back upstairs to check up on her other birds.

ELIZABETH

You birds alright in there? Any smoke or fumes?

ELIZABETH walks into her room, closes the door, and walks near her vanity. PEAR charges from underneath at her feet to which ELIZABETH jumps onto her bed in shock.

ELIZBETH

Why'd you do that when all I did was ask a cautious question, Pear?

BLUEY laughs.

ELIZABETH

Oh, not you, too, Bluey.

MIKA plays with a Lego toy meant to be a ship that ELIZABETH and ASHLYNN built three years ago. ELIZABETH rests on her bed.

MIKA

Pear, come look at this cool new toy I found! We can destroy the pieces!

PEAR

When have you become so mischievous?

MIKA

I was bored and found this when flying around! Don't blame me.

PEAR

Alright, whatever you say!

BLUEY flies onto ELIZABETH's bed and bites her hair to get her attention.

BLUEY

Angie.

ELIZABETH

Oh, she's downstairs still, but don't worry. She's in her cage with a covering.

BLUEY chirps.
