早前有文友觸及自閉症的話題。對 autism 或 Asperger's syndrome 的認識,除來自外國網站的案例和報道,主要是讀過的兩本小說: Jodi Picoult 的《House Rules》以及 Mark Haddon 的《The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time》。
頗有趣的是這兩本小說不約而同描寫患自閉的少年主角如何獨力查案、他們看待世界/人/事物的角度、世人對自閉患者的誤解、家屬的難處、痛苦與掙扎。
《The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time》手法比較輕鬆一點,從生活小品描述男主角如何憑他高功能自閉者對數字的敏感、對事物觀察入微等優勢去調查誰是殺狗真兇。
Synopsis:
Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. But he has a special focus on one subject - forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he's always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he's usually right.554Please respect copyright.PENANAr7J6t1zJ4w

But when Jacob's small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob's behaviors are hallmark Asperger's, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police. Suddenly the Hunt family, who only want to fit in, are directly in the spotlight. For Jacob's mother, Emma, it's a brutal reminder of the intolerance and misunderstanding that always threaten her family. For his brother, Theo, it's another indication why nothing is normal because of Jacob.
Quotes:
“Sometimes I think the human heart is just a simple shelf. There is only so much you can pile onto it before something falls off an edge and you are left to pick up the pieces.”
“My dad used to say that living with regrets was like driving a car that only moved in reverse.”
“when you [lose someone], it feels like the hole in your gum when a tooth falls out. You can chew, you can eat, you have plenty of other teeth, but your tongue keeps going back to that empty place, where all nerves are still a little raw”
Synopsis:
Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow.554Please respect copyright.PENANA61vWmJHzie

Although gifted with a superbly logical brain, for fifteen-year-old Christopher everyday interactions and admonishments have little meaning. He lives on patterns, rules, and a diagram kept in his pocket. Then one day, a neighbor's dog, Wellington, is killed and his carefully constructive universe is threatened. Christopher sets out to solve the murder in the style of his favourite (logical) detective, Sherlock Holmes. What follows makes for a novel that is funny, poignant and fascinating in its portrayal of a person whose curse and blessing are a mind that perceives the world entirely literally.
Quotes:
“I think prime numbers are like life. They are very logical but you could never work out the rules, even if you spent all your time thinking about them”
“Lots of things are mysteries. But that doesn't mean there isn't an answer to them. It's just that scientists haven't found the answer yet.”
