Thump, thump, thump. Ruby's feet hit down hard in sync with mine. We were breathing hard and sweating.
This was the day that changed my life, even if I didn't know it yet.
Ruby took a deep breath. "Jay, I need to tell you something."
That didn't sound good. "What?" I asked cautiously.
"At the homecoming football game over the weekend... " she trailed off.
"Ruby," I told her like a demand.
"Uh, HA called you a b-word and and asked why I was friends with you," Ruby informed.
I said nothing. I was too busy trying to keep in the tears that were threatening to rush out. I hate crying at school. It's humiliating. I only cried at school two times- when my hamster died and in kindergarten when I was caught trying to check my answers on a spelling quiz.
This was different. This was a friend- no, not anymore. He'd always been so nice. I couldn't comprehend what Ruby had just told me. But she had never lied to me- ever. And I wasn't even close with HA anymore. I didn't know him. I guess I never knew him. If Lina had told me I would have scoffed at the idea. She lies to me.
"You okay?" Ruby inquired.
My head popped and I nodded. I might be okay, but I'm not fine at all.
I realized I had been sprinting, trying to run from the truth. I slowed down. What was the point?478Please respect copyright.PENANAXy6GRzbgWn
