I peeked at the cops who were doing their rounds, wondering if it would be safe to stalk back to my quarters.689Please respect copyright.PENANAH3FINTTY6i

They weren't looking. This is my chance. I tried to run quietly to the other side of the alley.689Please respect copyright.PENANA4ZsfcUJ42b

I didn't stop. I continued running. I could hear their boots hitting the gravelled pavement as they pursued me.689Please respect copyright.PENANABzRA6grbtC

I continued to sprint away from the cops, hightailing to lose them from my trail. I needed to get away from these idiots who mindlessly followed their masters like trained dogs or puppets. Soon enough, the sound of helicopters followed and I was already running into a bar. Mother of roses, I really hope I lose them.689Please respect copyright.PENANASrWViy4lhu

"What the hell?" A man who was a foot taller than me held my shoulders to stop me from hurtling myself into the bar counter. I gotta hide was the only thing that echoed in my head which stumbled out of my lips as I stared back at him with my wide brown eyes filled with anxious fright. He didn't seem fazed by my sudden entrance. The dodgy pub must be his. Besides, the fact that the he was running a pub when it's strictly after curfew must mean he had a fair share of hiding delinquents from authorities.689Please respect copyright.PENANAm25Sh9v3cF

"Go to the back room. We have spare costumes for the performers." He said and pointed toward the end of the hallway. I nodded and muttered a thanks before running to shimmy out of my disgusting clothes.689Please respect copyright.PENANAa2BR4enNfT

"Oh hey, are you new?" A woman asked once I stumbled into the room. Out of sheer fright and confusion, I nodded. "Well sweetie, standing there won't help so I'd suggest you get a move on." Another one said, her tone a little condescending for her age and my liking. I nodded once again and scurried toward the array of clothing that lined the wall.689Please respect copyright.PENANAK0Vj2cdcfe

"Here. This will look good on you." A gruff voice from behind me suddenly piped up and I almost jumped a feet away. "Didn't mean to scare you," she mumbled and shoved an outfit toward me. I stared dumbly at the shorter woman (girl?) and she just shrugged and walked away. She was pale, had a crew cut and she was wearing baggy jeans and a tank top. I shook my head and focused on the attire that was given to me and immediately changed into it. There was no harm in blending in with this odd group.689Please respect copyright.PENANA21kQChpZcE

As I changed into what I now recognized as a dress that looked very much like a jumpsuit, I realized that this wasn't much of a pub as I initially thought. It was more like a dorm that housed the misfits. I let my hair fall on my back and stared at my disgusting reflection. From the mirror, I can see the three women talking. The two taller ones looked rapt to what the shorter woman was saying. The shorter woman and I made eye contact and I immediately looked away.689Please respect copyright.PENANA7CRCq4rCy9

"Trish, this is not the time to look for a side kick." She said and glared at the woman who first greeted me. "Yeah and right now, what we need is a mother figure type." The condescending one piped in and the shorter, boyish looking girl nodded. A mother figure type? What the hell are they? Recruiting for a private play? Well that kind of made sense if I pieced the facts together. The trio's conversation continued as I tried to mute them with my thoughts while I wiped the blood and dirt from my face. I let all the events from earlier this evening to sink in.689Please respect copyright.PENANASK9CmEb0lx

I'm a murderer. I blinked at the mirror and I could feel my eyes sting. Hot tears threatening to burst out of my tear ducts. I pursed my lips and pushed the thoughts out of my head. I killed the old guy. He was the retired cop. He was the retired abusive cop. He deserved it. I don't even regret killing him. I blinked twice and tried to push the images of the bloody corpse away. What mattered right now was that I'm alive and the cops won't find me. Not yet, at least. "So, what did you do?" The woman whom I now knew as Trish asked as she slipped next to me, her arms snaking around my shoulder to pull me close.

"Nothing...?" I tried. She only giggled at me and announced it the women in the room. "Yeah, sure. We believe you. I mean, with all the blood and dirt on you, we would totally think that you didn't do anything." The condescending tone was back again and the woman was glaring at me.

"Kisa, don't be rude." The short girl reprimanded. I sensed that she has an authority over these women. Maybe she was like the founder of this theatrical group? She sighed and walked over to me, a hand outstretched for me to shake. Confused, I took her hand and shook it. "Firm grip, there, 'hun." She remarked and I noticed that when she grinned, her gums showed nicely. "I'm Yuki. 24. I lead these idiots so they don't screw up." She said and gestured at the other two who immediately shouted "Hey!" And pelted tiny beads at us.

"The idiots consist of John, the 22 year old guy who's always at the entrance. Kisa, the perpetually angsty teenager. She's 18. Trish, the 20 year old weirdo and two other freaks you haven't met called Jim--same age as Trish and Howie, also 22 like John." She supplied and stared expectantly at me. I blinked and tried to attach the names to the faces. "Ah. I'm Sophie. 25." I said and tried to match the smile on her lips. "So, um, what do you guys do?" I asked as I stare at them, their outfits starting to unnerve me. Yuki shrugged into a leather jacket and strapped a knife on her left ankle.

"We're what you'd call vigilantes. Except more organized." She said and grinned mischievously at me. Wait. Vigilantes? Did I just get sucked into a deeper type of hell and crime? I'm already a murderer.

"I'm sure you'd fit right in," Yuki smirked and tossed me a bow and arrow. "Can't I get a gun instead?" I asked as I stared dumbly at the bow and arrow. This is so weird and what's weirder is that I have nothing against it.

"First kill usually eats up your conscience but once you realize you're doing it for the common good, it'll feel better."

"Common good? I thought we're doing this for fun?" Trish asked as she aimed her curved katana at Yuki.

"That too." She said and nodded as she tossed Kisa a pouch and the woman strapped it on her hip. "It's almost time, y'know." Kisa said and gestured at the clock that read 1:36 AM. The guy at the entrance suddenly burst into the changing room, all geared up, "Guys, Howie and Jim are on the way, are you ready?" He asked and then whistled when he saw me. "Yep, oh and this is Sophie. She'll be my apprentice for the mean time."

"Killer Soph and Murderer Yuki. Great mix." He grinned and opened the dood wider for us to exit the room.

"You'll fit right in," Trish singsonged as she walked beside me.

"Welcome to the madhouse." Kisa said before giving me a tap on the back. I blinked and nodded, feeling warmth blossom at the pit of my stomach. I'm finally with people who share the same hatred for the system.

"Thanks." My voice cracked and I was trembling in excitement. "I'm sure I'll love it here." I wasn't even being sarcastic. This is my goddamned utopia now and I will make sure it stays that way.
