Eight years ago I had the most wonderful experience to happen to me. I was adopted by a tall gentleman in his mid-twenties. He was looking for a furry companion for his partner, apparently she had been pestering him for a while about getting a cat and felt Christmas was the perfect time to do so. It was clear he was all prepared for my arrival as he walked proudly into the pet shop holding a large bag full of the most beautiful things. That I would discover later that day how cosy the plush bed was and how annoying that small squeaky mouse toy would be.
The shop owner had explained he didn't usually allow the purchase of pets so close to Christmas but would make an exception due to me being the only remaining kitten in my litter. All my brothers and sisters had already been adopted weeks before me. I was close approaching fourteen weeks old and the pet shop had considered giving me away due to my age. I had grown quite a bit, so didn't resemble much of a kitten by the time he picked me up. But when he saw me, I knew we were going to be friends for life.
Zack had an overwhelming scent of expensive cologne, I assumed it had been testing out samples whilst he was attending to his Christmas shopping. When he laid his eyes on me, I swear he squealed just like a five-year old child would. Immediately I felt a warmth radiating off of him and was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. This is my human, I thought to myself, purring away at him. He took me home that day with a small ball to play with in the plastic cat carrier. That horrible devil box, as I prefer to call it.
After a short ride in a car we finally reached my forever home, but I wasn't allowed out of the box just yet. Zack made himself busy wrapping up the array of items for his partner, or at least I think they were for her. But all my jade orbs saw was a plush bed, a range of toys and a packet of treats that looked more suitable for a cat. Perhaps it was a ploy, I thought to myself. My head grew tired from the traveling so I decided to curl up in a ball when my new friend was busy.
A few hours later I awoke suddenly at the sound of a slamming door. It startled me half out of my fur coat. I quickly jumped up, whacking my head against the roof of the devil box, forgetting I was still inside the cat crate. I gave the box a little hiss in annoyance before poking my pink nose out the grate. I saw Zack hurry over to me, he lifted me up and moved me behind the sofa.
"Wait here little guy," he said softly to me. I quietly meowed back to acknowledge his reply, before he dashed off into the hall. I overheard two voices coming from the other room, with my friend's voice explaining he wanted to give his partner her gift tonight.
"Oh, alright then," she replied to him, her voice much louder now. I assumed she had walked into the lounge.
"Sit beside the tree," Zack suggested. His partner gave a sigh but happily obliged with his request. Behind the sofa I heard a lot of rustling, my eyes widened, I really wanted to know what it was. Curiosity was slowly getting the best of me.
"You've got me cat items?" I heard her ask, "But we don't have a cat?"
Zack laughed, "Wait here," he replied, "I've got one last present for you." He walked over to my hiding place, my jade orbs lit up with glee. It was time to meet my other owner. He scooped me up out of the devil box and gently tapped a bow sparkly bow on top of my head.
"Oh my gosh, you didn't!" his partner exclaimed getting to her feet. Her eyes were fixed on me, I meowed at her nervously, clingy to my friend Zack. He smiled and nodded in reply, "I love him, I love you. Thank you," she said taking me into her arms. Her eyes were full of tears, I hoped of joy. She felt just as warm and loving, I never want to leave her embrace.
Later that evening my new family was snuggled up on the sofa together with mugs of hot liquid in their hands. I would join them shortly, but my jade orbs were focused on the large green thing towering above me, decorated with lots of shiny baubles and sparkling tinsel. I had to have them. I happily amused myself, pawing at the balls to knock them over. I was content with my new life.
They were preparing to head to bed for the night when they found me, underneath the Christmas, happy munching on the sparkling tinsel. They laughed together and exclaimed, "That's what we should call him, Tinsel!" I chirped happily, I'm so glad they picked me.
