I licked my lips and rubbed my hands together in anticipation. Thoughts filled my head, thoughts irrelevant to the lesson we were currently learning. I was sitting through a boring lesson about the French Revolution, something that I didn’t really care about. I blankly stared at the teacher’s power point on the screen and twirled my pen between the gaps of my fingers.
The bell rung around fifteen minutes later, and I started to pack my things up. The principal had given me all the necessary things that I’d need during class. Although it wasn’t as much as the other kids, I didn’t really care. If they worked, and did something, then it’s all good. I put my notebook into a bag that booked like a laptop bag.
Gathering my papers was a hassle. Part of my paper was crumpled up because of the way I was leaning. And rubbing on it. The top left corner of it was smudged with ink that I was playing around with during class, and there was ink smothered around different parts of the paper. Everything had ink on it; except for the parts that required it. The answer boxes were all empty, and I sighed in disappointment. I had told myself that I’d at least listen in class. But because of how much had been going on lately, I kind of strayed my mind and thoughts away from the lesson and instead focused on the recent events.
I rubbed my eyes and stared in space as I was zipping my bag up. That was when someone tapped me on the shoulder. At first, I didn’t react, I reacted only when they nudged me over to the side a bit. I snapped out of my daydream and turned around.
“Awake, Sleeping Beauty?” It was the boy from earlier, that was sitting with me during lunch. I had later learned that his name was Jeremiah. He allowed me to call him Jerem.
“Um- where’d you come from?” I looked at him with a tired expression.
“I don’t know, maybe the sky?” Sarcasm shot through his tone. “I came from class, to pick your ass up. We have a fifteen minute break before our next class.” I nodded and picked up my bag and book. “Where’d you get that?”
“The library.” I shrugged as we made our way out of the classroom.
“Seriously? Little women?” He grabbed he book from me and stared at I wide eyed. “You like classical?”
“Um- I guess?” I snatched it back from him. “Give it.” He pouted at let go of the book. I huddled it against my chest and let out a groan.
“What now?” He stared at me, nearly bumping into another guy.
“My back reeeeeeeeally hurts...” I rubbed my back aggressively and gasped out in pain.
“Stop being a wimp.” He rolled his eyes at me.
“Wimp? I practically got thrown across the cafeteria room while you just stood there and watched me suffer.” I hissed at him. “I should be calling you the wimp.”
“That’s your fault. Clearly.” He pointed at me. I looked at him with the most boring look. Bumping into a huge body, I trampled over my feet, falling to the ground. God, please no. I don’t want my face to hurt as well.
Jerem had grabbed my uniform, dangling me in the air, my toes touching the ground. “Sorry. He never watches where he’s going,” He glared at me. “Oh! Knox. Buddy!” I looked at the body who belonged to the so called ‘Knox’. I stood back up, gripping my book tighter and scooting behind Jerem’s small frame. Look, I was never the type to talk to like- big men alright? I only did it or the money back then, but when I come across them aside from jobs, I literally lose my voice.
“Yo.” I could see him smile. “You good?” He pointed at me; a mockful smile on his face.
“Yeah.” I quietly mumbled. The silence was so loud. He had a huge frame, an arm slung around another boy’s shoulder. He had a few tattoos along his arm and fingers. Accompanying his gorgeous looks, he had blonde hair, a little dusty. It reached his shoulders, and he had tied the back layer into a small ponytail.
“Is he new?” He looked at Jeremiah.
“Yeah.” He smiled back at Knox, beaming; literally.
“He’s cute.” I scowled at him, staring daggers into his soul. “Really adorable.” He shook his head and laughed. I didn’t like him. I really didn’t. Jeremiah nodded, giggling along with Knox.
“Right, so Knox is one of the first few friends I met when I came to this school.” Ah. Okay, that makes sense. “Stop hiding behind me, he won’t bite. If you stay on his good boy list; that is.” I looked at Jeremiah with puppy eyes, desperation shot through them, wanting to get out of the area and NOT waste our precious break. “Okay, I need to go bathroom, so why don’t you,” He pointed directly at me. “Go and become friends with him and his friends!” He evilly smiled at me, and I vigorously shook my head. “It won’t be long, just like- five minutes.” I frowned at him.
“Not cool.” I whispered into his ears. He left just like that, leaving me cowering beneath huge shadows.
“So, new kid, what’s your name?” I stared at him, holding my book with an even tighter grip, my knuckles turning white.
“Um. Twenty.” I smacked my lips, I meant to say my name, but instead, I said a number. I quirkily smiled.
“That’s your name?” He cocked an eyebrow.
“No, no, I’m um. Zayn.” Yes. I’m Zayn, that’s who I am. I just nodded at my own thought.
“You’re a very interesting person.” He stepped closer to me, his arm leaving his friend’s neck.
“I’ll do anything except fight you; if I have to survive.” I stared at him.
“Pretty boy, I won’t do anything like that.” I flared an angry look at him.
“Don’t call me that.” I gave him a rebellious look. He put his hand on my shoulder, making me flinch.
“Alright kitten.” I flicked his palm off me, not wanting the physical contact. “Let’s have lots of fun this year. I saw what happened in the cafeteria. I’ll make sure that doesn’t happen to you again.” He gave me a dirty look, making me gag. “Excited?”
I shook my head, annoyance spreading through my veins. I really want to go home now.
