He finally let me go after I agreed to his offer. He told me two guards would escort me through the security procedures and the dorm procedure. He had given me a total of $150 to spend on the weekends, knowing that my pockets were empty, he gave it out of generosity and pity. I took it anyway. Apparently, students who did well over the week would have the privilege to go out to the nearest town plaza, accompanied by three other students and four guards. I figured I’d try and do well in my first few weeks, so I could get myself some new clothing, other than the school uniform.
Speaking of school uniforms, he also gave me four sets of them. Two sets for gym classes and two for regular school uniforms. They were collared, and each set came with a tie. When I saw, we were required to wear a tie, I grimaced; but accepted it anyway.
On our way to the security area, it was the first time I saw a smile in a while, was when one of the guards asked me how I was. I’ve never been asked that question, so I thought hard about it. I came up with the answer; ‘fine’. I smiled mentally before patting myself on the back for my extraordinary answer. He only smiled and nodded as we walked up the creaky stairs and into a dimly lighted hallway. I spotted some machines further down, and I frowned.
“What are those?” I pointed towards the grey rusted machines.
“Security procedures. Go through it calmly, and we won’t have an issue.” The guard continued looking forward. When we got there, I could spot the machines literally rusting, the paint peeling from it. “Any baggage’s?” He eyed my empty hands. I shook my head, indicating a ‘no’. “Any weapons; flammable and explosive, sharp edged items, chemicals, alcoholic beverages, daggers, flick-knives, knives, star knives, shuriken throwing irons, harpoons, swords, and sword sticks aren’t allowed beyond this point. Anything of that sort will be thrown away into that bin.” He pointed towards a black bin, filled to the brim with other weapons; discarded. It sounded like he’s been doing this all his life, speaking in a very monotoned voice.
He raised an eyebrow waiting for an answer and allowed me to walk through those door-like machines that you’d see in an airport. Most likely a metal detector. I slowly walked through; it didn’t make any sound. I sighed in relief as I stood there, not knowing what to do next. The guards followed up behind me, as I waited for them to turn off the machines.
“This way.” The guard led me down another hallway, through a door, and into a magnificent room. The walls were lined with gold, the pillars pearlescent white. Reflecting the light in four large mosaic glass windows. I gasped in awe. No wonder this place was so huge. Behind all the rust and old dust, there lay a huge hidden school. It looked as if a royal was meant to live here. Each step we took, our shoes echoed, making a small click sound.
As we walked up, I noticed the halls were all empty. “Where is everyone?”
“In class. Sir Willemsen said you are allowed to skip the first two blocks. Only to fix up your room and unpack. Clearly you have nothing to unpack, so you’re off to get to know the place until lunch. After lunch, you’ll have to attend your classes.” He took a piece of paper out of his pocket and handed it to me. “This is your schedule.”
“Thanks.” I took it from him and unfolded it. He then handed me another folded item, instead this one was thick. It looked like a pan flip. I stared at it until I finally took it in my hands.
“The map. If you want to look around.” I unfolded it and the bottom of the page hit the floor. I stared wide-eyed as I raked it up and down.
“No way in hell, am I going to find out where is where.” I pointed at the map with my other hand. “This thing is almost as long as my height-.” I cried in despair.
“You’ll make it.” He chuckled and walked away. Is he seriously just going to leave me here? I sighed in desperation. Lord, three years? No can do. I shook my head as I continued to look at the map. It felt like I was reading a scroll. I scoffed at the thought. Realizing the guards had left me at the front step of my dorm for the next three years.
I carefully turned the doorknob, allowing myself to take a whiff of the smell from inside the room. I stepped into the room, the floors were carpeted a violet-red. Taking off my shoes, I observed my surroundings. Trying to take in the fact that this was going to be my home for the next three years. Two beds were on either side of the room, it was a pleasantly large one. On one side of the room there was a door, leading to the bathroom. Obviously, the place looked like it was already being lived in. Baggage’s were stuffed under one bed, assuming it was from the other student. There were two windows situated a little above the two beds. Two ventilation vents were above me, symmetrical to each other. The room was surprisingly clean. I wasn’t used to this kind of lifestyle, so I awkwardly sat on the other bed, the one that wasn’t crowded with stuffed toys.
I laid down. It was soft and clean. I haven’t been in such a clean environment for so long. Even this made me- somewhat glad. I could feel a smile growing on my face as I put my hands crossed on my stomach. I let out a sigh and decided to go out and walk around for a bit. I hesitantly got back up, placing the only thing that I brought here, a navy-blue heart pendant. This wasn’t a pendant that held much meaning to me.
I only kept it because I caught such a beautiful relic in a garbage dump. When I found it, I thought about how someone could possibly be as rich, to throw away something that looked so precious and beautiful. I rubbed it once before placing it back down on the night stand. I walked over to the door, putting my shoes back on and stepping out.
