Did you know that Nicaragua is Central American’s largest country?! The only freshwater sharks known in the world can be found in Lago de Nicaragua—Lake Nicaragua. Lago de Nicaragua—Lake Nicaragua—is also the largest lake in Central America! Nicaragua is the only country in Central America to be colonized by both the Spanish and the British. September 15th is the day we celebrate our independence from Spain, this includes all the other Central American countries! The country's name is derived from Nicarao, the name of the Nahuatl-speaking tribe which inhabited the shores of Lago de Nicaragua—Lake Nicaragua—before the Spanish conquest of the Americas, and the Spanish word Agua, meaning water, due to the presence of the large lakes Lago de Nicaragua—Lake Nicaragua—and Lago de Managua—Lake Managua— in the region. The national fruit of Nicaragua is sapodilla. This fruit's pulp is yellow/pink, and it turns red as it ripens. Sapodillas are very sweet and they are served as after-dinner fruits in Nicaragua, sapodillas grow throughout the country. The sacuanjoche flower is the national flower of Nicaragua, it grows on a conical tree that flowers around May. Sacuanjoche flowers are most fragrant at night in order to lure sphinx moths to pollinate them. Anyways, now you know more about Nicaragua!
