'Don't do this Scar!' I thought to myself. 'Don't be the girl shouting 'Hello' in haunted mansion.'
Nothing but darkness and silence accompanied me as my feet took me deeper in the forrest. All the animals seemed hidden, alarming me of the possibility that there is something more dangerous out there.
'Turn around now!' I shouted in my mind.'Turn around and go, drive as far away from here. Possibly, towards the shower and warm bed!'
The waves, those strange, distand feelings that ran rampant in my heart, were growing with every step I took towards the heart of the forest. The small, sane part of my brain was warning me about the idiocy of my idea to walk into the forest in the middle of the night. However, the bigger part, reinforced with my stupid heart, kept taking me deeper and deeper.
'Abort mission! I repeat, abort mission!'
Surprisingly, I had some mean ninja moves, for I moved soundless, avoiding every possibility of exposing my presence. As I reached some sort of clearing, the waves reached their maximum, informing me I've arrived. Where and why, has yet to be discovered.
-"Well, well.'' said husky voice laced with amusement. "We hit the jackpot."
I heard chuckle and growls, and I moved a little forward peeking through branches. What I saw confused me all over again. I understood where the fear and panic came from, for there was a woman maybe few years older than me, clutching a baby to her chest protectively. In front of her stood a tall, well built, handsome man, surrounded by two dogs, one brown and other grey – the source anger and satisfaction.
"If you care for your life, rouge, you will get off my land!" the woman spat, her voice mixture of power and fear. The baby in her arms remained soundless, which surprised me. The man threw his head back, his laughter echoing around the forest. The dogs let out strange noise, and I felt cold sweat running down my back as realization hit me like a train. They are wolves, werewolves.
"You are not in position to make threats, oh great Luna." man mocked her, making a small yet dangerous step forward. I could feel the woman's growing fear as she clutched the baby even tighter.
Suddenly I felt torn. I knew I had to help the woman, all my moral rules urged me to jump and lunge on the man, but small part of me wanted to be on his side too. Something in him kept calling me in, the same way as woman's fear did. Maybe the fact he was a werewolf like my father.
But as the baby in woman's arms suddenly cried startling me, I instantly knew which side won. As soundless as I could, I opened my bag and pulled out all the weapons I had in it. I put my wolverine gloves on, and hid knives in my boots. Everything from my lessons came back to me, and I felt confidence ruling my mind. Well, here goes some ass kicking!
The man and wolves kept circulating around woman, eying her every move. I frantically searched my mind for some kind of plan, but came out blank. Just as the man took another step towards, I decided to wing it. Not thinking my actions through, I grabbed a pebble from the ground and threw it in their direction, hitting the grey wolf in the head.
Shit, crap, shit, crap!
All of their heads turned in my direction, and the wolf I've hit let out a dangerous growl, which in wolf language I'm sure meant – You're screwed.
"Who's there?" the man shouted. "Show yourself!"
I slowly crept to my left, careful not to let any sound, willing my heart and breaths to be stable, for I have a feeling they could sense them. Once I reached the opposite side of where I was before, I threw another pebble hitting the other wolf this time. And sure enough, their heads snapped towards me as on cue.
"There is more than one." the man said calmly, searching the forest with his narrowed eyes. Both wolves growled loudly, anger fuming through their ears. The woman and baby kept silent and motionless. I crept back to my original place quickly, hoping that one of them will fall for my act. Like on cue, the wolf I hit last, the one with the brown fur, growled even louder and ran in the direction I was mere minutes ago. My happiness was cut short as I felt the worst feeling I could at this moment - a sudden urge to sneeze.
I inwardly groaned, this does not happen to heroes in movies!
I'm going to die because of a sneeze! I'm going to die because of a sneeze!
That mantra kept repeating in my head as I let out a noise that sounded to me me like a meteor crushing into Earth.
-"Apchoo!"
Now that my cover is blown, I did one thing I thought was reasonable at that point. I jumped from my hiding place, facing two startled faces, and I'm sure the wolf was surprised too if it could actually show it.
The man was extremely handsome, his black hair was messed up and his dark eyes narrowed in suspicion. His body worth of a Hollywood actor was covered in black clothes, and his hands clenched in fists. I think he saw me checking him out, for a playful smirk found its way on his lips.
"Bless you." he said huskily after a while.
"Thank-" I started to say automatically but quickly scolded myself. Seriously Scar? I cleared my throat and in, what I hope it is, low and dangerous tone continued. "I suggest you listen to her and leave."
The men let out a small chuckle, upgrading his hotness to 2.endless.
"Yeah, and what are you going to do about it?" he mocked, cocking his head to side. I called upon all the movies I've seen in order to help me act all badass and scary.
"The same thing I do to all dogs." I said smirking. "Train them."
The wolf let out the scariest growl I ever heard, and the man's eyes grew even darker, which I thought was impossible. In the corner of my eyes I saw the woman staring me in disbelief and surprise, but my eyes were locked with the handsome man's in front of me.
"You should take your own advice and run away while you can, little girl." he said taking step forward.
I resisted the urge to actually listen to him, because mind you, he was really intimidating and scary. I brought my arms in front of me, mimicking Wolverine pose I've seen on movie cover and smirked.
"I hope you are a fan of Hugh Jackman, because you are about to be personally introduced to his most famous character." I said. The man smirked again and lifted his hand up.
"You stay out, this one is mine." he said to his wolf friend, his eyes never leaving mine. Then he stepped forward and began circulating, which made me mimic him.
"I like you, it's a shame I have to kill you." he said crouching a little, the smirk never leaving his lips.
"Right back at you, buddy." I said eying him. In my mind, the plan of attacking him was forming, but something prevented me from doing so. This game of cat and mouse we were having was too amusing, and I felt he shared my thoughts.
"You could join me and keep you pretty head attached to your body. You could be mine." he said, and sincerity flashed in his eyes. I was confused for a second, but I quickly composed myself.
"I would consider it, but there is one little thing." I retorted, preparing myself for attack. "I'm a cat person."
And with that, I lunged towards him, kicking his knee with my left foot, which caused him to hiss in pain. Then I used the makeshift claws with intention to hit him in jaw, but he winced back and I only managed to scratch him, earning a whine from him. Burnt smell surprised me, and he caught me off guard, throwing a punch to my jaw which sent me flying backwards. I tasted blood in my mouth and my brain registered huge pain surrounding my jaw. Thankfully, it wasn't broken, but it's bound to make an ugly looking bruise. Ignoring the pain, I quickly jumped up, the anger filling and riling me up.
"You shouldn't have done than, blue isn't really my color." I gritted through my teeth, lunging forward one more time. We rolled on the ground few times, both throwing punches and kicks. The only thing that was giving me will to continue was anger, so I concentrated on it, drawing its power like Gala always advised me. I was now kicking him with all the strength I had, my arms and legs moving on their own accord and for the first time I had the upper hand. I raised my hand in air, and bailing it in fist lunged in his side, just below his ribs.
The makeshift claws dug deep into his flesh, tearing it apart, and his face scrunched in pain and arms dropped by his body. The revolting stench of burn filled my nostrils again, and I realized that the material the claws are made of affects him somehow. Just as I was about to pull my hand back, something sharp stabbed me into my arm and pried me away from the man. I felt the most excruciating pain I ever had as wolf kept digging its teeth in my arm.
Just as I thought it would rip it, it was peeled away from me and thrown into the nearby tree, making it crack. My eyes met the woman's blue ones, filled with concern and confusion, but I didn't have a chance to thank her, as the wolf came running back into us. The way she was fighting it, her speed and strength made me realize she was a werewolf too, but I didn't have much time to dwell in that realization as the screams of crying baby made us all freeze.
My head snapped in its direction so fast I heard my neck crack. The man was holding the baby in his arms, smirking at us. I heard a growl filled with pain and anger from behind me, and I didn't need to turn to know who made it. The noise coming from my right made me turn my head only to find that one more wolf decided to join the party. I recognized its brown fur as the one that ran searching for me.
We were all frozen, staring at each other, waiting for someone to make a move. My mind registered the pain my entire body was sending, especially my arm, but I ignored it. The only thing that mattered was the innocent child in the hands of an evil man.
"Well," the man decided to break the silence "as much fun as that was, the party came to an end. As a prize, we will let you live long enough to see the death of this precious baby."
He snickered cynically, making my whole body on alert. I suddenly felt the largest amount of anger taking over my body. My ears became deaf to everything but cries of a baby, my eyes only able to register the man in front of me. This enormous need to protect this child settled in my heart, and when I spoke, I could not recognize my voice.
"Put the child down,"– the strange voice came out of my mouth, low and dangerous. It was filled with so much power it sent shivers down my spine. Man's eyes widened in surprise and fear, and it seemed as if he struggled whether to listen me or not.
"Now!" my mouth moved again. Pained expression covered his face as he slowly crouched and put the baby back on the ground. I heard someone gasp behind me, but my eyes never left him, afraid he would harm the child. The man stared between his hands and me, surprise evident in his eyes.
"How did you…" he started but trailed off, unable to finish.
"Now," I started in the same voice as before. "I want you to leave this place and never come back," I glanced between the wolves, "all of you."
The minute those words left my mouth, all three of them stumbled a little, but then quickly took off, the man mumbling a promise of a new encounter.
As soon as they left, I felt like I was pulled from some kind of trance, my mind only then registering the fact that they actually ran and I'd won.
"Ha!" I shouted, my voice back to normal. "Run away, you fools. You have just been Scared!" Laughter burst out of me. I actually made that up a while ago, thinking I needed some badass remark to be known by. All the best characters in the movies have them, and mine might not be as brilliant but it made me laugh. I turned to look at the woman who was once again clutching the baby to her chest, softly murmuring something in its ear.
"Get it?" I asked, still laughing. "Because my name is Scar and… never mind." I mumbled facing her unamused and confused expression. We stared at each other for a few minutes, and I realized that she was really beautiful. Her eyes were sky blue color, her soft and graceful face surrounded by honey blond hair. Her appearance made me wonder whether all the werewolves were as attractive as she and that man from earlier were.
"What are you?'' she suddenly questioned, eyes arrowed in suspicion. It took me by surprise. Who asks something like that?
"A person?" I offered, unable to think of a better response. She took a large breath through her nose and it looked like she was sniffing the air. I felt a little self conscious, not being able to shower for two days now and the fight I just had were bound to make me all sweaty and smelly.
"I can't recognize your scent." she whispered, but more to herself, eyes widened in confusion.
"Mango and papaya?" I offered again, remembering the shower gel I used last time I showered. I sighed, suddenly tired as the pain from my injuries flooded me back. I struggled a little to get back on my feet, wincing as I felt my legs burning in pain. I looked at them and found my jeans were ripped in several places and covered in blood. Shaking my head I took as step toward a woman with interest of introducing myself.
"Look, my name is S…" I never got to finish my sentence as something came running from the forest like a blur, and I was yet again tackled to the ground.
I was pinned to the ground, my eyes staring at deathly looking teeth that were snapped furiously in front of me. The wolf that was towering over me was huge, it was at least twice a size as the two others from before were. Its black color was made it look more dangerous, the power and strength it radiated scared me even more. The woman kept shouting for it to stop, but I couldn't concentrate for my bladder was sending my mind wrong ideas. I inwardly cursed – first a sneeze then this?
Universe is making jokes with my life here, and I wasn't amused at all! The woman shouted again and her voice pulled me back from my thoughts.
"Look, Max…" I tried to sweet talk it from the idea of murdering me, but my choice of words was bad on all levels. Calling it by the name that was most popular amongst dogs angered him more, and it snapped its teeth once more, making small amount of saliva to drop on my face. I resisted the urge to throw up and continued. "I mean no harm. Why don't you let me go and I will gladly desert this place never to be seen again, so you can continue chasing your tail?"
I would like to point out that I'm extremely stupid when in fear, for I seem to forget ground rule: do not insult big bad wolf and dig your own grave!
It suddenly growled, the sound vibrated through my body. From there, everything felt like slow motion: it's opened mouth nearing my neck; the woman shouting again; and lastly the pain that spread through my shoulder like illness.
While I was busy wallowing in my misfortune, my mind projecting the images of warm bed and shower, the wolf was peeled away from me, and this time I didn't waste time, I jumped to my feet quickly and pressed hand to my shoulder, meeting warm liquid of my blood. Just as I was about to flee this place, the sound of snapping and bone breaking startled me. My head snapped up and my jaw hit the floor in surprise.
Right before my eyes, the black fur of wolf began to disappear; it's body shrank; face rearranged into what looks like a mans one. I blinked, and there in front of me, where once stood black wolf, now was very pissed off, very naked man. My mind was slow to register his nakedness, but when it did, my hands flew to cover my eyes, ignoring all the pain they triggered in process.
"Holly cow! Holly cow!" I mumbled to myself, my brain still trying to process the transformation I just witnessed. I heard someone joining us and muffling, but I refused to put my hands down.
"You can look now." man's voice was heard, and I slowly peeled my hands from my eyes, and peeked through one of them finding him dressed in brown shorts.
My theory of all the werewolves being attractive once again proved itself, for he was very handsome blonde man in his late twenties. His body carved to perfection, height towering over mine like a mountain. I moved my gaze to left, only to find another man, standing protectively next to the woman and baby. His hair was light brown, but his eyes were black as night. I wondered whether it was their real color, for they seemed clouded. He, like the other man, was half naked, his torso carved like Michelangelo's David's, shadows counting 8 packs. He noticed me checking him out and sexy smirk flew on his full lips for a second, but he quickly composed himself and glared at me.
"What are you?" the first man questioned making me roll my eyes. He then sniffed the air like the lady did few minutes ago. "You smell different."
"Seriously?" I sighed. "I've been on the road for two days straight without the luxury of a shower, and I just had my own version of World War III here. Give a girl a break, will you?" I asked, throwing my hands in air in exasperation. The pain came back to me from the sudden move, reminding me of open wounds on my arm and shoulder, and the rate of blood I'm loosing.
The suspicion in their eyes never lessened, and my poor try of humor didn't amuse them. I sighed again, tired and hurt all over my body, wanting nothing but to leave and tend to my wounds. I waited for a second to see whether the woman will actually thank me for saving her. Realizing I will not get the words of appreciation I damned well deserved, pressing my hand on my shoulder again, I turned to retrieve my bag and leave this place. My first encounter with the werewolves wasn't pleasant at all, considering four of them tried to kill me.
But as I whirled arround my eyes became heavy, the tiredness overwhelming me, my ears deaf to growls and shouting from behind me. That was when the second worst thing happened today.
The world was swallowed by darkness.
