Remind me again why I agreed to this?
Oh wait.
I didn’t.
“Wow, you two must be really in love.”
My face heated up and I lowered my eyes as the interviewer gushed over my interlocked hands with Carter’s.
“Actually, I think it’s too early for-”
“I know right! We’re going to elope to Mexico and have fifty babies!” Carter announced giddily.
Horrified, I shot daggers at him.
“Have you been talking to Lola?” I gritted out under my breath.
Carter grinned. I turned to send a glare Lola’s way. She smirked and winked at me.
“Really? Wow! That’s great!” The interviewer giggled. Does she seriously believe what he said? “Do you think that’s a bit of a rush though?”
I grimaced.
“Carter was just joking-”
“Oh, we are so in love, we would do anything to be together!”
Carter batted his eyelashes at me as he pulled me towards him. I was now in a very awkward position, being pressed into his chest and all.
I was about to deny it when Carter leaned down so his mouth was centimeters from my ear.
“Now, now, we have to act like a couple remember?”
I almost growled in frustration.
“Yeah, a couple, not a mentally insane and absolutely crazy one!” I hissed back. “Mexico? Seriously? Where does Lola get all this?”
Carter laughed.
“Aww!”
I jerked back to the sound of the interviewer’s squeal. Great. From anyone else’s perspective it probably looked like we were whispering loving and mushy things to each other.
I mentally shuddered in disgust as I pushed down the urge to throw up all over Carter’s shirt. Such a shame, it is a really nice one. I glanced at Carter and frowned. Until it was put on him.
“The ball was a success then, I presume?” Sarah, the interviewer, asked.
No it was actually the day my life was ruined.
“Yes, it was.” My mother agreed, nodding her head. “I was so glad Adelaide could finally find someone.”
Shudder.
“Wasn’t it great?” She narrowed her eyes at me, daring me to say otherwise.
I swallowed.
“Yup! Great! Yeah!” I smiled nervously.
My mother seemed to accept this and she turned back to Sarah.
“Now, let’s talk about other boring stuff!”
(Okay maybe she didn’t actually say that but you know, same thing.)
Thirty years later, I crawled out of the room, all old and withered.
Well, technically an hour later of watching the interviewer giggle madly with my mom while Carter got on my nerves and Lola creating evil plans in her head and my father bored out of his mind.
Yeah, I think we already established the point that my life sucks.
“Oooh this one’s pretty!”
I glanced over at Lola, who was currently pressing a velvety blue dress to her body and turning in circles.
“What do you think?” Lola asked me, still twirling.
“I think you need to stop spinning.” I answered, laughing.
“Aww, this is fun though.” Lola pouted sadly.
She came to an abrupt stop, her hands waving in the air as she tried to regain balance. With a loud squeak, she toppled over onto the floor, landing on her back.
“I can’t see!” Lola wailed.
Her eyes suddenly widened as she frantically tried to grip the floor.
“What are you doing?” I frowned at her.
“The floor is turning sideways! I’m going to fall!”
I sighed and rolled my eyes.
“Sure.”
Lola scowled as she finally stopped being dizzy.
“Some kind of best friend you are.” She glared at me accusingly.
I grinned.
“Love you too.”
Lola laughed as she got up from the floor, dusting her jeans. She flipped her red curls behind her shoulder and plopped down besides me, crossing her ankles.
“Excited for tomorrow?” She asked suddenly.
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
“What?”
Lola arched an eyebrow.
“You know, the date?”
My eyes widened.
“What date?”
“The one with Carter? You know, like the fake one to pretend you’re dating?”
I stared at her, horrified.
“Nobody told me about a date!” I shouted.
Lola winced at the loudness of my voice.
“Huh, I thought you knew.” She frowned.
Her eyebrows shot up as realization came upon her face.
“Adelaide!” She screeched, jumping up and grabbing my shoulders.
“What?” I shouted at the same volume.
“You know what this means?” She yelled.
“What?” I yelled.
But when I saw Lola’s expression, I immediately backed away.
“Oh no. Oh no you don’t-”
“Makeover!” Lola squealed loudly.
I was about to protest when Lola reached out and grabbed my wrist. She dragged me towards the racks of dresses, stopping in front of them.
Lola tapped her chin thoughtfully as she looked at me up and down. She furrowed her eyebrows in thought, pursing her lips.
“I don’t think this is necessary.” I bit my lip.
Lola gasped.
“Are you kidding me? You have a date! A freaking date!”
“And…?”
Lola pulled at her hair in frustration.
“Adelaide! Don’t you see? I’m your best friend! I practically signed up for this type of thing!”
She pointed a finger at me.
“And don’t you say anything else because I am going to do this despite anything you say. So just shut up and let me do my magic.”
I nodded slowly, my eyes wide.
“Good!” Lola yelled.
Her eyes darted towards the racks of clothes. Her eyes lit up and she jumped onto them, weaving through each row, tossing different colored dresses this way and that.
And yes, she literally jumped on them.
I stood there awkwardly as I watched her.
Suddenly, a purple dress flew my way. I squeaked and reached out to catch it in my arms.
When I looked up, I saw a bunch of different dresses flying through the air, all coming towards me.
I quickly reached out again, jumping and leaping to catch them all.
“Lola, slow down!” I shouted as I balanced a huge pile of dresses in my arms.
Lola didn’t listen as she continued to throw things my way.
“Wait is that-”
Something heavy landed on the pile, and I stumbled a little.
“Did you just throw a pair of shoes at me?”
I didn’t get a chance to look at what it was because at that moment, two pairs of high heels, a poofy green dress, a white cardigan and ten pairs of sunglasses were soaring through the sky.
I stared, horrified.
“Lola!” I screamed.
