Episode 36 - The Slick Shadow
My smile immediately fell when that Claudia-fellow closed the door of my bedroom.
My lashes lowered when her footsteps trotted away, and I carried my suitcase over to the bed before setting it beside it.
“Gullible,” I murmured.
After setting the suitcase down, I stepped back over to the door and locked it.
I then made my way to the window and pushed it open, stepping backward as the wind burst in the room, small spits of rain splashing on my arms.
But a shadow landed on the windowsill, and I stepped backward to let him in the room.
He landed silently on the ground, gazing up when his eyes glowed a bright red, and the window shut behind him.
“You were right,” I said then. “She didn’t suspect a thing.”
“I’m always right. She doesn’t care about master’s servants, so, naturally, she does not know what they look like,” Sebastian responded, although his smile was now gone.
He stood straighter then, brushing off his dampened suit and stepped over to the bed. “You weren’t too shaky with it, were you?”
I shook my head. “I was trying to be gentle.”
He knelt by the suitcase and lied it on its side, clipped open the locks, and parted the lid.
I watched as the contents inside it revealed itself.
Master Yumi lay in there, her body motionless and curled inside the suitcase like a small child curling after a nightmare.
Sebastian just scooped her up, and her head dangled off his arm.
I watched curiously as he pulled back the sheets and laid her in them, drawing them over her seconds later.
My eyes softened when he stared down at Yumi’s lifeless form, looking genuinely grim.
He brushed his thumb under her right eye—the one usually covered by the eye patch—and he set his forehead against hers. “Hold on, master. Hold on a little longer, okay?”
She never responded, just remained asleep.
I felt tears brim in my eyes but blinked them away. “If she’s soulless… isn’t she dead?”
Sebastian just stood up straighter, continuously running his thumb along her cheek. “Her mind is dead. She cannot think, scream, or cry. But she can still breathe, her heart still beats, and her blood still runs. She is not dead, but she is… lifeless.”
I looked away then, closing my eyes tightly as a whole set of cold consumed me.
“Hold on a second more, master,” Sebastian said gently, setting his forehead against hers again. “I will fix you. You mustn’t be in darkness for long.”
