Episode 11 Continued - Her Butler, Careless
The audience cheered then, screams of elation echoing through the entire tent as another scattered applause burned through us.
I gazed around nervously through the darkness, searching for him but it was way to black…
What was he planning? What was the point of all this?
But I suddenly felt my arm get caught, and I gazed up in alarm when Sebastian scooped me up.
He took one leap to the top seats and darted out the entrance, carrying me out before setting me gently onto the ground.
I glared at him. “What the hell was that?”
He just smiled. “Well… you did tell me I could put on a better show.”
I stared at him then, hoping he wasn’t serious.
There was no ulterior motive…? He just did that because I was bored?
This demon.
Sebastian pulled me to the side then, earning a squeak when the entire crowd burst out from the doors of the tent and made their way toward the other parts of the carnival.
“Careful, you might be famous now,” I said then, gazing up with a smirk. “Hide your face!”
He just gave me an amused look. “Master, don’t tease me so.”
My smile widened. “I’m the one who gives the commands here, you just listen.”
He sighed in annoyance.
“And was that play seriously called ‘Freak Show’ just because it was about two dolls falling in love?” I said then, shaking my head. “I don’t get the appeal.”
“They’re doll’s, master,” Sebastian said then, smiling slightly. “Monsters in other people’s eyes. All of these costumes are based of inhuman creatures which is why people dress up like them. They like the appeal of being abnormal.”
“That’s very observant,” I said then, “coming from a demon.”
“Should I be insulted by that comment?”
“Yes.”
“Hey!” someone said from my right. “You two!”
I gazed up in alarm as Sebastian gazed up in boredom.
A tall man came toward us, one that I had never seen before, but he looked like one of those stereotypical assistant nerds with his glasses and clipboard. Although he was wearing some kind of button-up with a professional vest over it, he had a tie that stuffed unevenly into his over layer, and his pants were wrinkled and uneven.
Another gormless costume.
What was he supposed to be, even? A wannabe businessman?
“Hello, sir,” Sebastian said then, turning toward him. “May we help you?”
“Yes, hi!” he said then, closing his eyes as he smiled. “My name is Taylor! I’m an intern, filling the position for the director’s secretary!” He gazed up then. “The director sent me out here to talk to you about something. He’s on his way, but he wanted me to catch you first before you vanished.” He then glanced to his right. “There he is now!”
Another wannabe businessman walked toward us, making my lashes lower as Sebastian remained at my side. This man, though, had grey streaks in his blonde hair and a scruffy beard, although he looked more sophisticated than assistant man, over here.
Oh, I just realized Sebastian’s tailcoat was back on… how quickly can he do everything? I would never understand that, other than one explination:
He’s a demon.
“Hello,” an older man said, stepping toward us, “my name is Sam Wiltz. I am the director for this play. And you must be the ‘butler’.”
Ha! He said that is if it wasn’t true.
“Indeed, I am,” Sebastian said then, acting oddly calm, “how may I help you?”
“I just saw your performance and thought it was phenomenal,” Sam said, smiling.
“Really, now?” Sebastian smiled, too. “Your other two didn’t seem very fond of me.”
I watched this encounter curiously now.
“Oh, James and Clarice?” Sam waved his response away. “They just don’t like being disrupted. They’re like children, almost. You, on the other hand, are excellent at improve skills. Your talent lacks in no areas at all, Mister….”
“Sebastian,” he said then.
“Ah, yes, Sebastian, the demon butler.” Sam chuckled. “That would make an amazing character! Here… let me give you a proposition. I will hire you to act in my play and pay you. Just for the next couple of days until Halloween is over, and we pack up.”
My lashes lowered.
Sebastian did this on purpose, didn’t he?
He wants to investigate closer… and what way to do that then be a part of the crew?
Sebastian smiled then. “That sounds exquisite. Do I have to live nearby for this?”
“Not at all!” Sam said, shaking his head. “We have tents and trailers for all of our folk! And… as said before,” he gazed up, “just a couple of nights, is all.”
Sebastian gazed down at me then, silently asking for permission.
I nodded.
He gazed up then. “I’d happily do it! On one condition.”
All of us gazed over at him in question.
He just caught my shoulders and pushed me in front of him, making me stumble. “That my friend, here can join, too!”
I shot him a warning look.
He just ignored it.
I laughed nervously then. “Oh, it’s alright! I’ll be fine by myself! I have no talents in general, so….”
“Oh, don’t say such things!” Sebastian said then, smiling. “She’d love to! When shall we start?”
My blood boiled then.
“Tomorrow!” Sam said then, smiling. “Be here before twelve o’clock!”
“Alright!”
“And we’ll be willing to accept the girl,” he said then, gazing down at me. “If she can act well. We will do auditions tomorrow for her.”
“That sounds exquisite,” Sebastian said then, smiling still. “Tomorrow, it is.”
