Knock knock knock
“Hey Marie I've been kind of an asshole lately and realized that I don't even know what you really like for breakfast. So, what would you like?” I asked. I waited a moment for her to say something, but there was no response. My head rested against the door. “I'm sorry” I gently whispered. A piece of paper slid under the door and hit my foot.
Chocolate chip pancakes
I immediately ran downstairs and turned on the stove. In a few short moments I had a batter, from scratch, mixed together in a bowl. It didn't take long for the first few pancakes to come off the stove. I felt that this was the time that everything was going to get better. I was happy.
Knock knock knock
“I got your breakfast.” I said happily. The door cracked open wide enough to pass the plate through. I waited by the door for a moment. The plate smashed against the floor and pieces of glass flew under the door hitting my feet. I slid down the door feeling defeated. I screwed up again. Why can't I do anything right. I reached out and picked up some of the glass. Blood dripped off my hand as i squeezed on to it tighter. If only I could understand her pain, this would be as close as I get.
Knock knock
I got up and answered the front door.
“Valentine?” I asked.
“I just stopped by to apologize.” Valentine said.
“What for?” I asked.
“I stepped completely out of… is your hand bleeding?” Valentine asked.
I hid my hand behind my back and shrugged it off completely. Valentine didn't take to kindly to me hiding it. She grabbed my arm, but then she froze. Her gaze shifted to the stairs behind me.
Marie was standing at the top of the stairs hanging onto the railing like her life depended on it. She looked extremely malnourished. Her hands and knees were dripping blood.
“C-can I get the broom?” Marie asked.
“Yeah, of course.” I said running to the kitchen closet. I fumbled around pots and pans looking for the dust pan that was hanging right next to the broom, Valentine had to point that out to me.
“Relax, its just a broom.” Valentine said pulling them off the wall. She held them out to me with a smile. I took them happily and returned to Marie.
“You should get cleaned up. I can take care of the mess.” I said.
Marie shook her head and took the broom from me.
“I got to go. Clyde needs help attaching some doohickey to Celia’s whatchamacallit.” Valentine said.
“Thanks for stopping.” I said.
Valentine walked out the door. I went and sat down in the living room, leaving Marie alone for a bit.
Knock knock knock
Valentine just left. Who else could it be? I opened the door.
“Hello, old friend.” King greeted me with a grin. He stood in the doorway wearing fancy dress clothes.
My first instinct was to punch him in the jaw with as much force as I could, but to no avail, it didn't make contact. He disappeared from sight and I went stumbling forward. Before I could hit the ground something grabbed my shirt and pulled me back into the house. The door slammed shut following me sliding across the floor.
“Nice attempt, but you failed.” King laughed.
“Why are you here?” I asked pulling myself up with the help of the stair railing.
“I believe you have something of mine and seeing as none of my pawns can get the job done, ill do it myself.” King said.
I got back on my feet and ran at king full force. My head dropped level with his waist line as I attempted to tackle him. Again he disappeared and I slammed my head into the door. The door, being solid oak, rang my head like a bell. I fell to the floor writhing in pain. First I upset Marie now I have to put up with this shit.
“I'm so glad I changed the games this year. Making you my primary target was gold.” King laughed.
“What are you talking about?” I asked rubbing the top of my head.
“I got bored of just hunting random women. So, I decided, why not target the women my most beloved antagonist loves the most.” King said. “Watching you suffer has brought me so much joy and its all thanks to that old friend of yours, Jack.” King said.
King picked me up by the back of my shirt and tossed me in to the bar stools next to the kitchen counter. I heard cracks, but I wasn't sure if it were me or the chairs. I made an attempt to get back up.
“Don't even bother.” King said walking to me.
I grabbed a shard of one of the bar stools and made an attempt to stab King in the side. Before the shard made contact he disappeared again. Upstairs I could hear the sound of Marie screaming for help. Moments later she came stumbling down the stairs, King followed shortly after.
“Dad!” Marie yelled before she was grabbed.
I watched as she squirmed in King’s arms.
“Don't tell me you're just gonna lay here while he takes your daughter.” Prodigy said.
“Let go of her.” I said.
“Tell me, why should I?” King asked. “Why should I give you back anything when you took everything from me?”
“Let me talk to him. We are family after all.” Prodigy said.
“Why would I do that? You'll kill my daughter.” I said.
“I won't touch your daughter, I promise.” Prodigy said.
“How can I be sure?” I asked.
“Because you're not the only one that loves her. Don't forget I was there to when she was conceived and born. My blood runs through her veins just the same as yours and ill be damned if my brother takes her.” Prodigy said.
“I am definitely getting blood work when this is all done.” I said. “Fine you can take the front seat, but the moment this goes downhill you're done.”
It took less than a moment for Prodigy to take control, it was a very painful moment. I was still seeing everything like I was in my own body, but it wasn't me talking. Prodigy had complete control of my movements and my voice. The only thing that currently separated us were our eyes. His were gold, mine were blue.
