Think twice

Does anyone even just sit and think anymore?

Does everyone just let the world think for them now?

What happened to peace and free thought?

Who killed and replaced it--

With the stress of always being in a rush?

Who smells the crimson roses that sway--

In the summer breeze along garden paths?

Who lays in the damp, scratchy grass at night--

To stare up at the glittering stars?

Or the fluffy cloud creatures on a sunny afternoon?

Who thinks about what is best for someone else--

Instead of only thinking about what is best for themselves?

Who still believes in imagination?

Depression, murder, robbery, corruption

Vandalism, hate, dismay, consumption

Pain, fear, regret, war

Suicide, revenge, rape, uproar

Protests, violence, gangs, guns

Who can blame them for their lack of imagination--

When the world sees nothing but death?

Stress and fear grow where hope and joy flee

Anger and hate move in as love and laughter faint away

How did it get this way?

Must it always be this way?

Must it always be so cruel?

Why must everything concentrate on the negatives?

The pessimism? The half empty glasses?

Laughter, joy, friendship, harmony

Music, festivals, flowers, family

Pets, fairy tales, love, creation

Hope, confidence, play, relaxation

Food, forgiveness, sharing, smiles

Is there hope for the world to change?

Who could possibly save us from this downward spinning spiral--

Into this swamp of sadness, ever prowled by shadows of nothing--

When we don’t even know how we got here?

Pillow forts, pirates, princesses, dinosaurs

Doll house, picture books, building blocks, s’mores

Marker on the walls, dress up on the dogs

Monster in the closet, an invisible friend by their sides

Look at the children!

Those cow-eyed, blank slates!

So pure, so fresh--

Uncontaminated by the world which we created,

But we must keep them so.

We must keep the despair from curling around their shoulders--

And whispering in their ear.

They will be our Bastians,

Reviving our world

One imaginative wish

At a time.
