The eyes of the lost

Stare as you enter their forbidden realm

You’re not one of them

They know for you lack a gloss of exhaust

They’ll stare at you relentlessly

Daring you to turn back

Eyes like these come in a pack

Stay longer and pay the penalty

The eyes of the lost

Know their own doom

They don’t care about you in your room

While they shiver there in the frost

They’ll stare at you relentlessly

From the fence posts, in the alley

Their pack numbers ever increasing to a higher tally

But even out of sight, their eyes are with you endlessly

The eyes of the lost

Wish for a home, a friend, a new life

Or even just an end to their neverending strife

As they whine, seeking shelter in an old box tossed

They’ll stare at you relentlessly

Begging for a friend,

Someone to save them from their bitter end

But instead you close the door unacceptably

The eyes of the lost

Cower as they’re carried away

They had only wanted to play

They never meant to accost

They’ll stare at you relentlessly

As they pace along their cell

Longing for rescue from their silver dented hell

They’ll call into the the shadows desperately

The eyes of the lost

Lay drained on the mud-crusted, icy floor

Ever staring at the locked door

For they know they are lost

They’ll stare at you relentlessly

As you enter inside

They’ll bare their teeth, arch their back, fearing genocide

Instead you open their cell pleasantly

The eyes of the lost

Widen in surprise

At this savior in disguise

Who saves them from holocaust

As they lick and rub and smile

Wagging goodbye to their colleagues meanwhile

In the face of their jealousy

The eyes of the lost

As you carry the other so zealously

Because the rest know that they’re still lost
