其實，歪果仁的親屬稱謂很好掌握，比如uncle一個詞可以叫遍叔伯舅舅姑父姨父，簡單粗暴。

但是架不住機智的我們習慣了複雜思維，總在糾結他們到底怎麼分清楚誰是誰呢？那咱們今天就細細理一遍，看看各種親戚都怎麼叫。

一、immediate family直系親屬

Immediate family這個概念在各種法律中會有不同的定義，但一般來說，英文中的直系親屬包括父母（parents）、兄弟姐妹（siblings）、配偶（spouses）和子女。

Close relative也可表達同樣的意思。

二、extended family稍遠的親屬

► Grandparents

英美人民稱呼自己的祖父母時有很多種親昵叫法。奶奶、外婆可以叫作granny、nana、grandma；爺爺、外公可以叫作grandad、grandpa等。但對他人提起自己的祖父母時，一般就說grandfather和grandmother。

想分清楚到底是爸爸那邊還是媽媽那邊的祖父母，就可以用「on ... side」的表達，例句：

My grandmother on my mom's side is Korean.

我外婆是韓國人。

可以用maternal grandparent來指代外婆外公，爺爺奶奶則稱為paternal grandparent。這種說法比較正式。例句：

The patient says that his maternal grandfather died of brain cancer.

病人說他的外祖父死於腦癌。

你可以繼續在前面加great-，表示再上一輩的祖父母，例如曾祖父母是great-grandparents。例句：

My great-great-great-grandfather fought in the Civil War.

我的曾曾曾爺爺打過內戰。

► Aunts and uncles

叔伯姑姑是paternal aunt/uncle，姨媽舅舅就是maternal aunt/uncle。他們都是你的aunt/uncle by blood，有血緣關係的。他們的配偶則是aunt/uncle by marriage。

和中國孩子管爸媽的朋友叫叔叔阿姨一樣，有些外國家庭里，孩子也會叫爸媽的好友aunt或uncle。

► Cousins

當人們說到cousins這個詞時，通常指的是first cousins，即堂（表）兄弟姐妹。其他的遠親（distant relatives）也可稱作cousins。

你的親兄弟姐妹（siblings）的子女叫做nephew（侄子、外甥）和niece（侄女、外甥女）。

三、in-laws姻親

In-law的用法通常適用於配偶的直系親屬，比如mother-in-law（岳母；婆婆）、brother-in-law（姐夫；小叔；大舅等），自己的女婿、兒媳也可以叫son-in-law和daughter-in-law。

如果描述更遠一點的配偶的親戚，人們就會更清楚地解釋其中關係，而不用in-law，如，

My wife's grandmother passed away last week.

我妻子的奶奶上周過世了。
