After confirming the origin of the working gloves, the Serious Crimes Investigation Unit (SCIU) is mobilised again to conduct a further investigation.
Kessler Huang is at his flat in the Choi Wan Building when his "bedtime" with his new lover is interrupted by the sound of the doorbell. He opens the door hastily clutching his panties, and is frustrated when he sees Carman again, who is leading the team to question him.
"Dear Sirs and Madam, why are you here again?"
"Mr Huang, we'd like to ask you some more details about Joan Wong."
‘I honestly don't know anything! If I had known someone would die and bring bad luck to me, I wouldn't have rented out the flat! Damn it!"
Carman does not care to be polite to a pimp, and with eyes wide open, she warns him fiercely, "Don't evade the question! We in the SCIU don't have time to handle your illegal business right now, but we can always contact the Anti-Prostitution Team of the Triad Crimes Investigation Bureau to arrest you for the offense of manipulating another person to engage in illegal prostitution! Tell us straight, does Joan Wong have a boyfriend or not?"
"Madam, she's a prostitute, how can she have a boyfriend? If she's in love with her boss, she won't be dating him like some shy little girl! She just needs to pay me to redeem the documents and we're done!"
"Then why did Joan argue with you several times, saying that she didn't want to do it anymore?"
‘Well, for those times when she was arguing, she did seem to be emphasising that she was going to get married... Nobody would believe her! She didn't pay her ransom, and her boyfriend has never come here to rescue her. She's always been serving clients and hasn't been with a fixed boss. I think she's just lying."
Rubbing the puffy bags under his eyes from overindulgence, Kessler Huang, with a look of fear that the police would bother him again, and without caring about upsetting his new lover, bows and presses his hands together as if he is confessing to the priest about his messy affairs.
"It doesn't matter if you don't believe me. Just ask the tenants of Room 7C I slept with, alright? You should have heard about their complaints against me, so they won't lie to defend me, do you get it? They can all prove that Joan Wong never had a boyfriend!"
On the other hand, Dino is called back to stop investigating the johns and goes to the sub-divided units of Room 7C of Choi Fung Building to interview Indy Yau again.
Indy Yau is sleeping during the daytime. She is very impatient after being woken up, but due to the professional quality of a nightclub girl, she insists on putting on some make-up before meeting people. It takes more than ten minutes before she opens the door slowly.
She is in her early thirties with a cheesy look wearing a sparkling beaded dress that barely covers her big breasts. She shakes her boobs in front of Dino while trying to pinch out the look of a maiden in love, and then lets out a whiney voice from her red lips.
"Sir, what do you want from me again? If you come again, I'll charge you. I'm up to date with the latest trend of PTGF (part-time girlfriend) service among schoolgirls, and I'm also good at it! The first time is not expensive - $500 for 8 hours of dating during the daytime, and you'll pay for any entrance tickets and meals. For tongue kiss, blowjob, or jerking off in the washroom, just like what you did during your first love..."
"Ahem, I don't need to. Miss Yau, I'd like to ask you a question: did you say that Joan Wong often went out in the middle of the night with her suitcase of clothes, like she's going out to meet her 'boss' secretly?"
"Yeah, that good whiner works in costumes, and sometimes some of her clients will take her to specific places, like cafes, swimming pools, or even the countryside, and I heard that some people find it very exciting."
Somehow, Joan Wong went out every night. She preferred to fight with the vampire landlord and served johns during the day instead, putting off quite a few of the guests coming in nighttime. Then she would take all her costumes out, call a taxi, ask the driver to help carry them downstairs, and went somewhere.
"Probably to a mansion, I guess? She would be gone all night and come back in the morning. When she was back, she was smiling like she had won the Mark Six lottery, but she has never ransomed herself."
Curious, Indy Yau asked Dino, ‘Did the police find out? Was she the mistress of a rich man or a celebrity? Or was that girl addicted to dressing in costumes and really thought she was an innocent schoolgirl? So she was privately dating the young master of a prestigious family, and the family couldn't tolerate her, so they hired someone to kill her?"
"The case is still under investigation. Don't make any wild guesses..."
"I took a look at the body from afar the day it was found. What a horrible death! Her face and pussy were rotten, right? And the news said she was pregnant? Her hometown friend, Miriam Miau, must have been happy to see her dead, wasn't she? Was she the murderer? I'm scared of having such a neighbour next to me. Can you take me to a safe house, Sir? I can pay the rent with a variety of special services! Like those in the porn videos..."
Indy Yau is not much educated. She speaks in a disorderly manner and often adds several lines to sell herself, not to mention that she keeps on patting her breasts and shaking them on purpose. Dino can't stand her anymore and hardly manages to sort out the clues in her statement.
"Ms Yau, do you have any idea where Joan took the taxi to?"
Or did she mention anyone she fancied, how they looked, what they did for a living or any other information? Has she ever brought that person to Room 7C and bragged in front of all the tenants?"
Indy Yau finally drops the whiney style and switches back to the normal behaviour of a nightclub waitress who is about to exceed the age limit and lose her job. The heavy makeup on her face cannot hide the traces of the cruel reality; her lips pull out a bitter smile and the wrinkles appear make her look older.
"I have asked, of course I have! If she knows a big shot, I would like to know him too. It would be great if I could get to know some celebrities, then my business will improve. In the nightclub, I can only attract some middle-aged people these days. If I don't get to the top of sales by the middle of next year, and if I don't secure a match with one of the 'bosses', I'm going to be kicked out for being too old."
"You have asked her, so what did she say?"
‘That girl had secrets, but she just kept them to herself! Till her miserable death, she had never told me which boss she was meeting with! She was just like those innocent schoolgirls who secretly went out with each other! When I was in around grade 7 or 8, I was already doing the business sneakily after school because my family was poor. I once had a crush on a tall boy who helped me out several times, but I didn't dare to confess. It was a mixed feeling of joy, sorrow, and pain. And then... well, nothing special happened and here I am."
Once they are in the business, they are forever deprived of the right to love someone and are only left with the bosses who come and go as they do.
"Sir, frankly speaking, why do we have to devote ourselves to love? Sometimes I even wonder if Joan was so tired of living that she fantasized about a boyfriend, so that she could show off to her johns, the landlord, and neighbours, and ends up fooling herself..."
John and Francis revisit the scene to see if anything else can be found.
John stands in the middle of the taped-off sub-divided unit of Room 7C and lets out a long breath.
It's too hard, he thought. Too hard to solve.
It seems as if there had been a major breakthrough in the case, but then again, it seems as if there had been no real breakthrough at all.
The mysterious boyfriend - It is not sure if he was really the boyfriend of Joan Wong, but it can be assumed that he was a grassroots worker who was connected to the victim by a pair of working gloves. Combined with her occupation, her pregnancy, and the damages done to the body, it is likely to be a case of love murder.
But the question arises: how can this mysterious person come and go as he wishes, easily commit murder or dump a body without being recognised by anyone, but at the same time without being so strange and suspicious as to be spotted by the security guards, the landlord, and the tenants?
If that person could do these, why would Joan need to go out every night? Couldn't she just wait for the person to come and date privately?
Who did she go out with?
Does SCIU really have to look for clues in the list of johns? But even the pimping landlord doesn't think she was having a stable relationship with any of the johns.
Who's lying? She's not imagining things, is she?...
If that is the case, everything is back to square one, and all the mysteries are entangled together, unable to be solved in any way.
‘’This boyfriend who seems to exist, but at the same time doesn't really seem to exist...”
"Yes, a boyfriend like the dark matter." Francis is also pondering. ‘The way she went out every night seems to be like having a boyfriend, and the way she gave gifts also seems to be like having a boyfriend. Her behaviour and the testimony of the people around her all prove that she had a boyfriend, but there was no direct observable evidence to determine whether she really had such a boyfriend or not."
