I tense up as I hear footsteps approaching. A moment later a familiar woman walks by from when I first woke up. My hands clench the sheets as the woman from before looks at me in shock. Then she looks at Harvey.
”Mr. Matthews! She’s not supposed to be awake for another hour!”
“Yeah, uh, listen doc; I just want to know how she got so beat up. The burns, the bruises, the weird fact she can’t remember anything... That’s not normal, something like this should have been reported or in a medical record, right?”
The woman pulled Harvey out into the hallway to talk. They tried to whisper, but I heard every word; my Demon Sense picking up even the slightest movement.
”We have theories that she might’ve been abused by her parents; maybe they would hurt her so often that they didn’t want her anymore. Maybe they erased her records. One thing is clear though; someone wanted her dead. I’ve already alerted the authorities to keep a close eye on where she was found, but the media is what we must be worried about. If they catch wind of some kind of lunatic running wild, it would be chaos!”
”Alright, what are you going to do about it?”
”We can’t just keep her here forever and hope no one will find her. A patient without a medical record could be anyone! And in the heart of the city, people will become nervous and suspicious once they find out. She will be ready to leave the hospital by tomorrow, someone has to take her out of here until we can sort this out.”
”You already have some chump lined up to watch her?”
”Harvey, you have to watch her.”
”...You’ve gotta be kidding.”
”Harvey, as long as I’ve known you... please just do it. I-I’ll pay you myself.”
”No, I’ll watch her, but next time I call in a favor...”
”Understood.”
I heard Havey sigh and then he walked back into the room. The woman went the other direction and down into the hall.
I stared at Harvey, I had to get out. I wasn’t going to go anywhere with him.
Harvey stood at the foot of the bed and crossed his arms, one hand massaging the bridge of his nose.
“Listen, kid. They want to keep you safe, and they picked me to be in charge of you.”
”No. No one is taking me anywhere.”
”I seriously doubt that you have a choice at this point; you can’t move, you can’t remember anything, and people will do anything to get their hands on you if they find out what you've been through!”
The footsteps returned. The woman was back. She’s nothing. All I have to worry about is staying away from this old human!
”You don’t really have a choice in the matter. Besides, even if you could walk out of here, where would you go? What would you do?”
My only response was to silently glare at Harvey. He had a point. But still...
I won’t let someone take me! No matter what, these humans can’t do whatever they want to me! I’m a Demon from the Circle! If they think the can treat me like some kind of item that needs to be put in the closet, I’ll kill them! I’ll kill every one of—!
My thoughts were cut off as a familiar needle stabs into the back of my neck and I slump forward into the woman’s arms.
