“Wait so if you’re a mermaid, does that mean that I could be one?” I asked. I made sure to stay in the couch since I still felt dizzy with Mom’s story. “You’re a half mermaid, yes.” What the heck! This had to be a dream, this wasn’t real. This was not real.
”So, you wanted to tell me before I found out on my own.” I said. Mom paused, “yes, these waters are also way stronger for mermaids. That’s why your foot cramped, it sensed you were a mermaid.”
“This doesn’t make any sense to me, how does nobody know about this? How do I even know I can believe you?” I asked. I felt I was asking too many questions, I had the right to. This was huge, way too huge.
”Mermaids have magic, merpeople. We hid our cities out of human view, made it impossible to figure out we exist.” She said.
“Will I be able to to those cities? Meet mermaids… or um merpeople?” I stared at our moving boxes waiting for Mom to answer, I wished I had known this before. “Well yes, I suppose you will have to at some point.”
I wondered when that would be, how amazing it would. Then, I realized, I was a half mermaid which meant, I would be visiting as one. I would have a tail, I wondered how pretty it would look. What color would it be? Red? Green? Blue? Yellow? I desperately wanted to know.
”I can’t believe this is even true,” I replied.
”I can’t believe I finally told you,” Mom said.
We both laughed and hugged each other, she kissed me on the cheek.
