“Please, you have to find my son!” Mom cried.281Please respect copyright.PENANAkBSUncSnro
“I’m sorry ma’am, but we’re going to have to close the case” Officer Jenny responded. “Now, I’m not saying that your son isn’t important but we can’t keep looking for him forever”.
“We have other cases to address,” Officer Jenny said in a sympathetic tone.
“I-I understand,” Mom sighed. “Have a nice afternoon”
I was enraged to hear that mom and the Officer Jenny had given up on Ash’s case so easily.281Please respect copyright.PENANALpkqI7mctu
So I stormed down the stairs and yelled;
“You police officers are a whole bunch of posers”
“You never really cared about Ash’s missing case!”
“Listen, we tried our best to find your brother but came up with nothing” Officer Jenny spoke in an understanding tone, people usually got emotional when it came to their loved ones.
“I bet you didn’t even check past my yard!” I screamed.
“Joyna, honey, please calm down” Mom spoke, trying to tone down my outburst.
“No!” I refused. “I am not going to calm down!”.
“In fact, mom, you should be on my side!” I shouted.
“I am on your side” Mom tried to reassure me.
“If you were really on my side, you would actually care about Ash’s well-being!” I accused.
Mom’s eyes widened in shock at what I had said, before being replaced by anger.
“Joyna Ketchum,” Mom yelled. “Go to your room right this instant!”
I let out a surprised gasp.
Mom has never yelled at me before…
Sure, a stern talking here and there, but never yelled.
“But-” I protested.
“Don’t make me repeat myself!” Mom threatened.
“Fine,” I grumbled.
“As I went upstairs, I felt a pang of guilt in my heart, but it was quickly overshadowed by my rage.
‘ How could mom be so calm and care-free while Ash is out anywhere, not knowing what to do!’ I thought. ‘Some mom she is’.
When I got into my room, I immediately sat down on my chair and got on my laptop, looking for anything that might lead me to Ash’s disappearance.
A few hours later of researching, high hopes and then crushed hopes; mom knocked on my door.
“Can I please come in?” she asked.
Although I did not want her to come in, I still said yes, because it would be rude to decline my mother’s request.
Mom came in and sat on the bed.
“Could you please come sit beside me?” Mom said as she patted a spot beside her.
“We can just talk from this distance,” I replied.
“Please?” Mom pleaded.
“Fine” I groaned as I sat down next to her.
Mom reached for my shoulder, something she always did when we were about to have a heart-felt mother to daughter talk.
I shifted away.
Hurt flashed on my mom’s face but quickly disappeared as she took a deep breath and sighed.
“I know you must be mad at me,” Mom said.
“I am” I agreed.
“Listen” Mom continued on. “ I really do care about Ash-”
“Then why’d you give up on his case so easily!” I accused.
“I didn’t!” Mom yelled back.
I flinched back.
‘That’s the second time mom yelled at me’ I thought in slight disbelief.
“I’m sorry” Mom apologized with regret in her voice. “I’ve been working double shifts all month and that’s been putting a lot of stress on me,” Mom confessed.
“Basically, what I’m trying to say…Is that I’m sorry for snapping at you” Mom apologized again.
I suddenly felt a wave of guilt wash over me.
“No, mom, I should be the one apologizing” I sighed. “I should have realized that you had enough stress with dad’s death, paying the bills, and paying for my medical degree”.
“I’m sorry for focusing so much on Ash’s case and not actually helping you” I spoke in an apologetic voice.
“Don’t apologize, after all, you were just being a good older sister” Mom reassured.
“Now, get some sleep, it’s almost midnight and you have school tomorrow” Mom said as she kissed my forehead. “Goodnight honey”.
“Goodnight, mom,” I responded.
I spent 5 minutes changing into my pajamas; I turned off the lights and hopped into bed. I finally drifted off into dreamland.
…
I felt something soft and plush between my fingers, I squeezed the unknown object some more.
The more I experimented; the more the object felt like…
Grass?
‘What!? Where am I!? Wasn't I in bed just a while ago!?’ I yelled in my head.
After a few minutes of questions zooming through my head; I heard a familiar voice that stopped me in my tracks, like a deer caught in headlights.
“Joyna?”
‘No, it couldn’t be him…’ I thought in disbelief.
“Joynaaa?”
‘He’s been gone for weeks’ I thought, still refusing to believe my ears. ‘Why would he just decide to show up unexpectedly!?’.
‘This doesn’t make any sens-’, but my thoughts were interrupted.
“Joyna!!!”
I swallowed a big lump of nervousness in my throat and answered; “Y-Yes?”
“Finally, I thought you were dead or something”
“Anyway, mom said we should head back and eat”
“Oh, ok” I responded, still not sure how to feel.
“Sooo, are you coming or not”
I just realized that I still hadn’t got up.
“Ok, coming” I groaned as I sat up.
Finally, I groggily opened my eyes.
I gasped.
Ash!
Ash was here!
I quickly stood up and hugged him, tears pouring down my cheeks.
“Whoa!” Ash yelped as I hugged him.
I didn’t care that I looked embarrassing while crying, Ash was here and that’s all that’s all that mattered.
But how?
I backed away in suspicion.
“Who are you!?” I yelled. “Why are you impersonating Ash!?”.
“What are you talking about?” Ash questioned.
“Don’t pretend like you don’t know what you’re doing!” I screamed.
“Are you okay?” Ash asked. “Cause you’re acting really weird”.
“Stop
