SAGE
The bass reverberates in my ears and the strobe lights crack like lightning over my closed lids. For a few minutes, I can be totally at ease and not think about anything. I let my body do what it wants to the beat of the music. It doesn't matter, finally, nothing matters.
Until I feel a hand low on my waist, that is.
I know that needy guys are part of the club culture. Being female and alone often gives them the impression that I'm there for the same pathetic reason they are - to get somebody to sleep with me.
Which, if both parties are interested, is nothing to judge. But, god, they sometimes really can't take a hint. I know I can't get too wasted if I want to be able to suitably defend myself. A shame really, because I could use a few strong drinks right about now.
I grab the unknown man's hand by the pinky finger, ready to inflict some pain if he doesn't immediately let go of my hip. Whipping my head towards the face attached to the hand, I stare into some seriously dilated pupils. It's not going to be easy to reason with this guy.
"Hi." He says hotly in my face.
"Bye." I counter impassively and let his hand fall. Sadly, he now uses his new-found freedom to grasp my shoulder instead when I try to turn away.
"Wait, tell me your name, honey!" I roll my eyes, not that he notices.
"I'd rather not."
"Let me buy you a drink then."
"Listen, man, I'm really not interested. My boyfriend is somewhere over there, getting me a beer." I point towards the bar on the other side of the room, knowing full well no one's getting me anything over there.
"No, what? I've watched you for a while, you're not here with anyone." Fuck, he's really going to make this hard.
"I was - " Suddenly an arm appears around my waist and a beer bottle gets pushed into my hand.
"Who's your friend, love?" A guy with dark hair and a dark shirt peers at me with a friendly expression.
"He was just leaving." I answer with a pointed look towards the harasser, who finally understands that he won't be getting any. As soon as he retreats to the bar, the stranger lets his hand fall from my waist.
"Sorry, I couldn't help but overhear."
"Don't you want your beer back?" I say with a raised eyebrow.
"I, uh, it's pretty much empty. I'm going to get another one, would you like one too?"
I have to think about that for a second. He seems nice enough to spend few minutes with, so I'm surprised to find that I'm not opposed to a beer.
"You don't have to, I mean, I didn't play the boyfriend just to -"
"A beer would be great, thanks."
A bright smile takes over his face.
"Great!"
I follow him to the counter, where he pushes through the people and immediately gets served, without paying. When he hands me a new bottle, I ask:
"Do you come here often?"
"Don't you have any better pick-up lines?" He responds with playful grin.
I swat his arm.
"I just noticed how fast you got served."
"No, I just know the owner and most of the bar staff. They like to keep me happy."
"You're a lot cockier than I thought you'd be!" He moves us to an empty table a few feet to the right.
"I'm really not." He looks down and I imagine a blush on his cheeks.
"I'm Xavier, by the way."
I take his extended hand.
