A hopeless girl sat with her arms cradling her body, sprinkled with bruises. Her dark hair fell around her face as she rocked back and forth. She was in an abandoned cabin. The walls rotting away and a chill breeze seeping through the window. The shutters had been ripped off the wall, swinging on its hinges, making an awful howling sound. There was another person in the room. A woman. She was towering over the girl with a sneer on her face. A bat hanging loosely in her hand. Her clothes were ragged and torn just like the girls’ and tried to make up for it with her greased back hair that rapped tightly in a neat bun.
“You stupid girl, you were supposed to have made your master breakfast but you were off in the forest. You know there ought to be fairies out there. They eat children like you!” She wailed in disdain, wincing. She raised her hand to her black eye. It was probably from the master when he found out she was being disobedient.
“My name is Melissa,” she whispered so quietly, the woman almost didn’t hear her. She lowered her hand and spat on the floor.
“No one gives a rat who you are girl,” taking a step closer and tightening her hold on the bat. Melissa flinched, scooting backwards, except, there was nowhere else to go. Her body was pressed flat against the wall. The woman smirked.
“You’ve got nowhere to go now,” taking another step forward. The girl, whimpered, clinging to the scraps of material draped around her body, even tighter than before, tucking her head into her chest. She couldn’t handle this anymore, no matter what she did or didn’t do, every day was the same. With all her miserability she wished as hard as she could to be somewhere else. Back in the forest where there were indeed fairies. But they laughed and gave her sweet treats and held her hands as they danced. A tear slid down Melissa’s face.
But the woman didn’t come any closer, No, She was staring at the shadows that were swirling around the room. Coming from her!
There was fear on the woman's face now. “Don’t, Don’t you touch me,” She stammered. “You know what they’ll do to yah!” The shadows seemed to grow. Not threatening, just brewing, waiting, protecting.
Melissa wasn’t meaning to let out her powers, she knew she would get a beating if she did. And now the woman was running. Not to her, but away from her, away from her shadows… Towards the town where people discriminated and hid from her. She wasn’t out of the ordinary, but to them she was. One mistake, one slip and they all turned on her. But her Aunt and Uncle had always hated her. To them, she was a burden.
Her aunt was half way down the hill now and Melissa knew she wouldn’t be welcomed back into the warmth of their home tonight. So she curled up in a corner of the abandoned cabin, biting her lip to stop herself from shivering.

She looked up to the stars, where a rip in the ceiling was left and stared. Drifting into a lonely sleep. Her shadows were her only comfort.
