The sound of a car horn had pulled Maxwell Clint from his sleep. His vision a haze, he looked over to the window and found that it had been left open. The long translucent curtains swirled around as a gust of wind managed to creep it’s way into the room of his polished brick house.
‘Jesus’.
He pulled the soft covers over his head and closed his eyes, but the sound of another car horn had pulled him out of bed quickly. He made his way over to the window and shoved the curtains aside in agitation. When he peeked outside he saw a couple of cars down below. Clint lived in a very nice house which sat along a busy street. The are was meant to be peaceful, the seller had said but it was evident that they had lied. They wanted to get out of this shithole as quick as they could. He watched as the cars drove by, leaving behind a dust storm, ‘damn idiots’, he mumbled before leaning back in and pulling the creaky window closed, but he left the curtains open. When he turned around he was faced with a messy room. It was like a bomb had gone off.
‘What the-‘.
His heart dropped when he noticed women's clothes, and the main pieces that caught his eyes was the bright red-laced underwear.
Oh, that’s what happened last night.
He groaned in annoyance and sat on the edge of the bed, leaning his elbows onto his knee caps.
He had drank too much at a bar and god knows how he got back here and into the bed. But he managed to snag a woman along the way.The sound of a water tapped clunking to a stop had caused him to turn his head towards the bathroom door as it opened up, revealing a woman, dressed in shirt...Dear god, he rubbed his temples as he tried to remember her name.
‘Hey honey, how’re you feeling?’
He feels the other side of the mattress dip as she climbed onto it, her hands then reaching out to grab him by the shoulders in an effort to pull him back. But when he resisted she hesitated, ‘baby, what’s wrong?’ Her voice is laced with concerned and he didn’t know why, but it irritated Maxwell.
‘Get out’.
He mumbled and she gasped softly, ‘wha- what’re you talking about? Why-‘, he turned to her suddenly, ‘I said Get. Out’, he looked her dead in the eyes for a few moments and he watched as her expression of pure shock turned into disgust, ‘well then, fuck you too Maxwell Clint!’ He turned away from her, not wanting to see her rip his shirt off and grab all her belongings. He heard the soft padding of her feet as she made her way to the door, ‘oh and Maxwell?’ He hummed in response, not caring to look back at her.
‘I hope you die alone’.
With that, she was gone and he was all alone, like always.
God Maxwell, why have you gone down this track?
He rubbed his temples and looked towards the window once again, the rays of the morning sun broke through the, now still, translucent curtains.
You have to get out of here, you have to have some sort of a vacation.
But did he really deserve a vacation? He was a player. A man who didn’t take life seriously and he was surprised that he managed to keep a roof over his head.
Get your ass out of bed.
He got to his feet and slowly made his way around the room to clean up and get dressed before heading down stairs to make some breakfast. He had seen that the woman- whatever her name was- had left the front door wide open. He wondered if she walked out pure naked and he nearly laughed.
He made himself some bacon and eggs, the usual, nothing special for himself. He switched the television on and watched the news. Usually the news had nothing positive to say and at some point, he changed to some children’s cartoon. He liked watching those instead... His children used to like watching those before... Well, they were no longer with him and neither was Melody.
Maxwell scrunched his eyes shut and sighed as he tried his best to wipe away the sleep.
He had a big day today... Right? His eyes moved over to the clock to see that it was exactly 9:00 o’clock... Something was happening in two hours time.
Oh, shit...
Right at that moment, his phone went off.
