For awhile I've been planning a horror video game, not quite like Zelda but there are fantasy elements and it's open world. Also plenty of enemies to kill and characters to unlock with special abilities. My favorite being Charlotte she's basically a special type of human that is closely associated with the sky, and rumored to be able to transform into a birdlike creature. Getting into her backstory would include a lot of complex lore which I don't have room for but here's a quick summary instead.

She was born into a community of sky people originally named Nyaguka, being the daughter of the princess. Eventually her mother was betrayed by her best friend, murdering her Nyaguka's grandparents. Her best friend was thrown into a brutal prison and Nyaguka's mother became queen.
A man stopped by their sky community and offered the best friend a chance for freedom. This chance of freedom involved murdering the queen and destroying their community. She obliged murdering the queen and burning their home to the ground.
Really what the man wanted was to kidnap Nyaguka at the time but her mother was far too strong for him to kill on his own. He erased Nyaguka's memory and raised her as his own granddaughter within a controlled environment renaming her Charlotte. The man is actually an Evil Scientist guy who had spent the past ten year experimenting on children to create the perfect bio weapon. He knows that Nyaguka won't break as easily as the average human.
She meets the other kids and her Mother's killer(which she doesn't remember as her Mother's killer) and they all encourage her to remember who she really is and escape to have a free life. She ignores the call but when her mother figures a pair of conjoined twins disappear she is determined to find them. The kids escape after using Nyaguka's power to burn down the facility that trapped them and she stays in the wilderness with a cyborg she grew very close to. She lives with hims peacefully and grows to detest and brutally murder human she encounters.
Until an important character who was also kidnapped by Evil Scientist Guy (Who she thought was dead). She unintentionally saves him by trying to protect her home and cyborg by murdering his kidnappers. If that even makes sense. They are about to kill him too but cyborg stops her because he's hot jk, they can just sympathize with his situation. So instead they're take him in and find out he's illiterate and incapable of self-defense so she teaches him that and they become close. However ESG continues sending people to capture all of them. (He wants them back for experiments)

She becomes a playable characters in the second game being only introduced in the first. It turns out somehow she was transferred to the necklace that the important character was wearing and is freed.
She can be added to your party if you are on good terms with both her and her friends which is considerably difficult. In addition to that there's no guarantee she'll actually join because sometimes she's just not in the mood.

The games stats are generally split up into three areas to which a character can excel, physical, mental and magical, which are pretty self explanatory. Characters are typically very strong in one category while weak in the other two (skewed). Or decent in two while weak in the other one(parabolic). Or finally, just mid at everything (balanced). What makes Charlotte so special is that she is balanced but strong in all the categories.
Special Abilities (these are benefits your character will always have:
Iron Will: Her mental health is not affected by manipulation.
Beligerent Scales: When one field is depleted she become stronger in the other two.
Reset: She can completely reset her stats to the way they were before the battle. When teammate dies which could be a make or break.
Final Resort: Before she faints she sends out a wave of magic weakening her enemies and strengthening other teammates on the field.

She generally works with swords, most of her attacks are combo sword attacks laced with magic and they are the strongest in the game.
However you can gift her with other weapons or resources which she uses accordingly. However she is incompatible with medicine (she prefers her own healing abilities) and modern technology until she gains enough knowledge to use it (which is gained by teaching them about the items but be careful this takes up precious possible bonding time).

She can basically change appearances as she pleases using her magic abilities, however she does stick to some distinct looks:
While lounging, her is short and black, she wears baggy pajamas making her figure appear more masculine and her eyes are grey.
While fighting, her hair turns pink, and her eyes turn red, she wears hanfu inspired clothes, and definitely embraces her femme fatale side.
When going out in public her hair is long and black with color of the tips. She still wears hanfu inspired clothing but it looks more modern unlike her fighting style. Her eyes turn brown.
How does she actually look? Well she has natural pink hair, she's about 4' 11". Her eyes are naturally grey. It can be noted she has a mark along her spinal cord resembling a sprouting tree. Though it's unclear whether it's a scar from experimentation or just a mark of her species. Most likely the latter though because she can get rid of her experimentation scars by changing appearance but the tree stays.
