The Dark Moon Pack? Alexander never told me of this, of who's the Alpha here. Is he ruthless? Does he even know that I'M coming. Panic starts to stir in my chest, were supposed to be off the radar, no one should know that we are even out here.
My hand clasp onto Katana's arm, "What pack are we at? What if someone tells on us for being here?" I ask anxiously. She gently moves my grip from her muscled arm. She doesn't even seem worried.
A brow lifts, "Do you think I would really lead us into danger? We are safe here, me and the Alpha of this pack go way back." She's so sure, but I'm not. Looking over at Kai, he's getting our bags out the car. I wonder what he's thinking. Does he trust his sister, trust that she'll keep us safe. Talking to him, like were friends, would be weird. He's not the funny, silly guy I knew before. He's. . .stoic and different.
Before I'm able to consider this, two men, one young and older come out the tall black doors. Behind the older man is a woman, she's mid height with white hair glowing down her back and highlighting her chocolate skin. Who the hell are these people?
"Hello, Nyxus." says Katana confidentially. She doesn't cower over their height, or look down at all. She holds her head high, as if SHE was the Alpha of this pack.
"What did I say about calling me that? I prefer the name Nyx." He reaches down and kisses the top of her hand. Katana doesn't even seem fazed by his gesture, or his dark eyes. So much lies in the back of them, the stories of unhidden pain and gore. He seems nice, too nice.
"Sorry, sometimes I forget, Alpha." She puts emphasis on the Alpha part. Gleam appears in the eyes of the dark-haired man. I noticed that gleam, it was the gleam that would appear in Alexander's eyes when he looked at me. When his lips kissed me down my neck, when his hands touched my-
"And it's nice to see you again, Kai." Nyx moves around Katana to shake Kai's hand. Not to appear rude, or even mean he shakes his hand. I don't know what Kai makes of Nyx, but I could tell he didn't like the way he looked at his older sister. I wonder what's the history between those two. Did. . .Katana and Nyx date?
My face squishes once my mind creates images of Katana and Nyx kissing. Just being around Katana, and knowing her for a short amount of time, she doesn't seem like the type of girl to date or show any loving affection. Not even to her brother.
"Same to you, Alpha Nyx." Kai says holding back a bit of a grunt. I just stifle a giggle to myself. Nyx finally catches my attention. Those cloudy, and mysterious eyes of his move over my frame.
"You must be Quinneth. The woman that Alexander risked the lives of so many to save, the girl that has kept so many up at night. It's nice to meet you again." He holds out his hand for me to put mine in. Will he kiss it just like he did with Katana? Or will he squish it to death, breaking all the tiny bones in my hand. The words came out to be humorous, but I know there is some seriousness to it.
Not to be rude, and to act like I wasn't affected by his intrepid words, I hold my hand out to him. Those lips that once kissed the hand of Katana kisses mine. They linger, then let go. "I can see why Alexander risked everything." My cheeks flush.
Something he said before held captive on my mind. "What do you mean 'again'? I believe I would remember meeting you."
"On the night of Alexander's heroics, his father called me in to help get him out. While we were in Insofar, we came across you, you had just done the spell and were passed out on the ground. I helped get you out, and your friend Lyra. How's she doing by the way?" I could tell he meant every word.
The mention of HER name sends shivers down my spine. I didn't know how Lyra was, the last time we talked was the conversation in the parking lot of school. And before that was when I almost killed her at the pack house when I found out she was the one to tell Alexander what I was doing. Til this day, I can't believe she would betray me. A small, secluded part of me feels remorse over what I did to her.
The voices in my head, twirling in the back of my mind to hurt her still haunts me today. Also, Skipper saying that she sensed evil inside of me.
I stop thinking of the past and focus on the present, "Oh, well thank you. And for Lyra-."
Katana was quick to cut me off, probably knowing to tell him I almost killed her would be a bad look for me. These people already hate me can't let them know I'm also a potential murderer.
"Can you let us stay for two nights? We need to rest, then we'll be on our way."
Nyx lifts a curious brow, "And where will your next location be, perhaps."
"That's none of your business." responds a stern Katana.
"It is not just his business, but ours if you and your friends will be staying here. Our job is to protect our people." This is said from the older man standing a few feet away from us. These are the first words he has said since we've been out here. His white beard moves elegantly in the wind as his hands tuck in his pocket.
"Slate." Katana eyes the man. "I can't tell you this, it's private information." The man, now known as Slate, gives a daring look to us. His eyes mostly linger on me, looking like I would cave and tell him our mission. He looks away from me and onto Katana. Thank God, a few more seconds and I would have drop to the ground and confessed.
"You are like a daughter to me Katana, you know that, but for safety we can't let you stay here without knowing what this all means." I could tell this was painful for Slate to say, but I understand why he's defensive over this.
I wrap my hand over Katana's arm, and Kai steps up as if something was going to go down. If there was a fight, I bet money we won't win. "There's got to be another place we can stay, it's ok." I whisper to her. My facial expression goes from stoic to soft, those hard eyes of her soften at the softening of my face.
Nyx chimes in, "Let them stay, Slate. If anything, bad happens, I'll take the blame. Katana's an... .old friend and I owe her."
"Yes, you do." Me and Kai look to each other, wondering what Nyx meant by him 'owing' Katana. I assumed their history was romantical, but maybe there's something more buried beneath the surface.
Slate reluctantly says, "Fine." He walks back into the pack house, the white-haired girl, who said nothing, follows behind him.
"So, I guess were staying then?" asked Kai.
Katana turns to him, to us. "Yes, now let's go."
🌺🌺🌺🌺
"I don't want you guys staying in the pack house, so you'll stay at my private residence. It's right over the bend, so we'll have to drive there." He takes keys out of his pocket; we all follow behind him as a few cars come into view. A couple of BMW's sit soundly, and behind it was a black rustic pickup truck.
"I hope were not riding in that aluminum can." Kai whispers in my ear. I silently laugh to myself. Damn Quinn, we're not supposed to be enjoying his company. My mouth goes to a straight line, regular and unreadable.
"We'll be taking my truck up to the house, or as Kai calls it, the aluminum can." says Nyx with humor in his hard, deep voice. Kai holds his head to the ground while I just look away.
After driving past lots of trees, hitting some dumps in the road, and seeing wolves running through the woods we reach Nyx's house. No, not a house but a mansion. He can't be the only person who lives here.
The house was grand and spectacular. It was a tan brown color made of rustic brick. Many long square windows fill the front of the house showing off its amazing interior. Red alder trees and Vine maple trees hid the beauty of it. Behind the house are rolling hills of land and mountains.
Nyx pulls up to the front of the house, the car makes a screeching noise as it stops slowly. We all hop out, Kai hands me and Katana our bags. Walking out the tall oak doors of the house are two small women. One had short dirty blonde hair tied to the back of her head, and she wears a red shirt with dark wash jeans. The other short woman next to her wears the same outfit, but her hair is longer and the color of midnight.
There was something- odd about the girl with the long black hair. The way her eyes scanned me, searched every nook and cranny of my mind. I jump from the car door being shut behind me. Nyx comes around and introduces us to the girls.
"These are the woman that man down my house." He points to the dirty blonde-haired girl, "Tina." His finger moves to her work partner, "And this is Alice. They will show you guys to your room, and if you need anything just ask them. I have some work to attend to, I'll see you three at dinner tonight." Before walking away, he gives Katana one last look and walks back to his truck and drives off. Black smoke blows out from the back, creating dark clouds.
"If you will follow us." says Tina. Her and Alice start walking into the house, we all trail behind them. I thought the outside of the house was amazing, the inside had it beat. Everything was white, clean and shiny. I bet that vase on the mantle cost thousands of dollars. We stand in the foyer of the house; a long hallway descends in front of us leading to the living room. Off to the left is a small room that holds two love seats and to the right is a tall wall.
Tina and Alice take us down the hall, past the living room to a wide staircase. On either side of us was two of them, they were long and grand. My hand slides on the white stairs handle as Tina and Alice walk quickly up the stairs. We all come to a halt once they've stopped walking.
"Katana your room is down this hall, last door on the right. Kai, this door behind us is yours." Katana and Kai leave me to their room, from the way Kai was moving around I could tell he wanted a shower. Slightly smelling myself, I could tell I needed once also.
Alice speaks now, "And you, Quinneth, your room is down this adjacent hall, first door on the left." I give her a smile and head in the direction they told me. Tina and Alice watch me walk to my room, the way they look at me like I might combust the house. My feet move quickly along the suede carpet until I reach my room.
Opening the door, a large queen-sized bed with a lavender duvet sits in the middle. On the right of the room are two double doors that lead to an outside balcony. Walking in further, I sit my bag on the bed as my eyes scan to the far corner, a bathroom with a large tub lies behind the door. I walk quickly to the bathroom and shut the door.
It's shower time.
🌺🌺🌺🌺
*Knock Knock*
I dry my curly locks with a towel as I walk over to answer the door. On the other side of it is Kai, he's now wearing a gray t-shirt with a star on it and dark jeans. "I didn't know where else to go." He says awkwardly. I move myself out the way and let him in. He looks around my room, taking it in.
I trail behind him, "Where's Katana?"
He shrugs his shoulders, "Stopped by her room and she wasn't there. Maybe she went for a run or something." He sits on the chair adjacent to the bed. Once my hair is semi dry, I throw the towel in the hamper.
"Mhm, I'm sure she's fine. She'll be back in no time." I assure him. I ask him a question that has been on my mind for a while, but before I'm able to get it out Kai says something.
"Are you still mad at me?" His hooded eyes glance to me. He moves over from the chair to the bed.
"No, I'm just- angry that's all. Everyone was lying to me and holding back information. I'm not a child I deserve to know what's going on if it contains me or anyone I love." He nods his head.
"I understand Quinn, from now on I'll tell you the truth." He pats his knees as his body rocks back and forth on the lavender duvet.
I began again and ask the question that has laid heavy on my mind, "Kai?"
He looks up, "Yeah?"
"What is up between Katana and Alpha Nyx? Were they ever-you know-romantical, and why does he owe her a favor?" Some unspoken language curved the air a few hours ago when we showed up here. The way that he said he owed Katana sent chills down my spine. I know if I ask her, she'll shut me down and say that it's none of my business.
I can see him studying my questions, working the words he's going to say over his tongue. "Honestly, I'm as confused as you are. Me and Katana aren't that close of sibling, there's years of our lives that we spent apart. What she did in those years? Unknown."
"You guys act like good friends; I find it hard to believe." He laughs.
"Yeah, good friends, not siblings. She doesn't tell me everything, not because she doesn't love me, it's because she doesn't trust me with it. She's always been like that, but if it's something you need to know then you'll know." He assures me.
He walks over to me, his tall stature looming over, his old spice wafts the air around me. Those eyes that look so much like his mysterious sister look at me. "She may not trust me, but I trust her. And with you. . .she likes to protect you from anything bad, I don't why she's just different with you." I gulp.
His long finger comes to my forehead and wipes the dripping water coming for it. "Are you hungry?" He whispers.
"Yeah." I say quietly. He turns me towards the door.
"Then come on, I smelled something Italian downstairs, I just hope the food isn't poisoned." I just laugh at his response, but coldly stop. These people are a bit creepy; they know my name so they know what I have done. How much danger I've put the werewolf world in. And the way Tina and Alice looked at me, it still burns in my mind. Those eyes and-
Were both down the stairs then walking through the hall to the big dining room. A long table, like at the pack house, sits in the middle of the floor on a European design carpet with matching chairs. The smell of homemade lasagna and garlic bread dances in the air. A couple servants place a glass of water and champagne on the table. As the kitchen door swings open, I can see for a split second, Alice leaned up against the counter talking to someone I can't see. Her eyes move to mine, a menacing look in those eyes and then the door shuts. The candle sconces on the wall are lit, the flames moving zig zag, illuminating the room into an orange tone.
My attention is taken away by the laughing coming down the hall. Me and Kai turn to see Nyx and Katana cackling. His hand sits on the middle of her back, directing her over to us. I have never seen Katana laugh before. There were times when a timid smile would grace her lip, and maybe a light chuckle but that's it.
Once they see us, all laughter and humor go out the window. She turns back to her stoic self and pushes Nyx's hand away from her back. He doesn't even seem fazed by her moving his hand, instead he walks to the chair that's the head of the table and sits down. Following him is Katana who sits at the end of the table, far away from his reach. Me and Kai sit across from each other.
"Tonight, will just be us, my Beta and his daughter decided to resend my invitation for dinner." We all just nod. He goes on to say, "So, Quinneth and Kai how are you finding it here so far?" He pours himself some champagne into a flute glass. He hands me one, but I just tell him no. Kai gives him a nod, letting him know it's well. Instead, I answer.
"It's nice, great water pressure." God that's a dumb thing to say, but it's the first thing that popped in my mind. It wasn't a lie, they do have great water pressure here. A large slice of lasagna is slabbed on my plate by one of the servants. I thank her politely, she nods.
"Oh, the water pressure huh?" He questions. A few seconds go by once I figure out where he's getting at. My eyes widen and I accidently choke on a bit of cheese from the lasagna. Kai drinks his water, trying not to laugh as a stern look comes on Katana's face.
I start to stutter, "I-I didn't mean that. It's just-." He holds up his hands indicating for me to stop talking.
"I'm just playing around. Let me stop before Kat kills me." He snickers.
Kai looks to Katana, he whispers "Kat?" to her. She just ignores him by grabbing a steaming hot garlic bread from the hand-woven basket. She didn't even wince as the steam seeps into her skin.
"Alice!" Nyx screams for her from the kitchen. She rushes in, her small legs stumbling under her. "Would you mind bringing some more ice cubes out here, please." A softness is in his eyes when he speaks to her. Maybe the romance isn't with Katana, but with Alice instead.
"Yes, Alpha." She says quietly as she walks back into the kitchen, his eyes linger on her as she leaves. Can Alpha's have relationships with their servants? After a few minutes pass by, she comes out with a silver bowl of cubed ice. As he takes the bowl from her hands, his fingers brush hers. I guess I'm the only one to notice since Katana is focused on her bread and Kai is talking to one of the servants. She shivers from his touch; all he does is bathe in her nervousness. "Will that be all Alpha?" She asked, her voice shaky.
"Yes, thank you." The only thing that makes sense is this: Nyx and Alice are mates.
