KILLER INSTINCT
CHAPTER ONE
A FEW WEEKS AFTER THE ATTACK, TWO DAYS BEFORE THE FULL MOON
Matt opened his eyes one morning and got himself out of bed when his alarm went off at ten to seven. He hopped into the shower and noticed the wolf bite mark had completely gone from his left calf muscle.
Weird, he thought.
Two minutes later, Matt stepped out of the shower and wiped down the steamed-up mirror above the sink. He sprayed on some cologne and then gazed up at himself in the mirror. Matt gasped back in shock as his blue eyes glowed brightly back at him like an animal.
"What the hell?!" he cried out loud.
Suddenly, Matt had an image flash before him of a wolf tearing Damon and Stefan Salvatore apart.
Is that me? Am I becoming a wolf? No way, he thought.
Matt closed his eyes and then opened them again but they were still glowing. His thoughts were still on about tearing the Salvatore brothers apart angrily, which made his transition into a wolf come faster. Matt gasped with horror as his ears began to grow upwards.
He cried out in excruciating pain as his bones began to break as he fell to the floor. Matt was petrified as he never felt pain like it. Sweat dripped down his body.
As quickly as it had started, it stopped suddenly.
Matt got back onto his feet slowly and stared back at his reflection in the mirror. His eyes were blue again. He walked back through to the bedroom and put on his Sheriff uniform and then picked up his phone.
"Come on, Ty, pick up," Matt said with annoyance. He was calling his werewolf best friend, Tyler Lockwood, but there was no answer. He rang his other best friend, Jeremy Gilbert. "Hey, Jer, are you busy right now?"
"No, got this afternoon off," Jeremy Gilbert replied at the other end.
"I'm working today, but meet you at the Grill in half an hour for coffee?"
"Sure, see you then."
The line went dead.
The Grill bar was busy as Matt walked in and found his friend up by the pool table with their beautiful black witch friend, Bonnie Bonnett.
"Hey, Jer, hey, Bonnie," he said cheerfully as he walked over to them.
Bonnie looked concerned at him. "Matt, what's going on? Jeremy said you were scared on the phone," she asked.
Matt was about to tell them, but then suddenly he could hear everyone in the bar speaking all at once making his head ache. His hands flew to the temples of his head.
"Would everyone just shut up!" he cried out loud with annoyance.
The bar went silent as they turned to him and then began talking again.
Matt's fists clenched up tightly with anger.
"Matt, it's OK, man," Jeremy said, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder.
"Get off me!" Matt replied and pinned him against the wall.
Jeremy pushed him off him and gasped with shock looking into his friend's eyes. "Matt, your eyes!" he cried.
Matt gasped. "I'm sorry, Jer, I don't know what's happening to me," he said. "I have to go," he replied, and he walked out of the bar.
Bonnie turned to Jeremy. "Something is definitely up with Matt," she said.
Jeremy nodded in agreement.
That night, Jeremy and Bonnie went over to Matt's semi-detached house with bags of beer and potato chips.
"Hey, what are you guys doing here?" Matt asked.
"What's going on with you?" Bonnie asked with concern. She sat down on the blue sofa next to Jeremy.
He took a seat and sighed heavily.
"You know I told you I got attacked by a wolf?"
Both Jeremy and Bonnie nodded.
"Look," he showed them his left calf muscle where the wolf had bit him and it had healed up completely.
"It's gone," Bonnie gasped with shock.
Matt nodded.
"I remember your eyes glowed in the GRILL," Jeremy remembered. He opened up three beers and handed them to his friends. "Have you tried to call Tyler?"
"I tried calling, but Ty doesn't pick up," Matt told him. "I don't know what's going on. Ever since the attack, I've been hearing and smelling things that I wouldn't have heard before. And.."
"And what?" Bonnie asked sharply.
"I keep getting these flash images of me tearing vampires apart," he told them. "Every time I think I think of Vicky, I get so angry. I just HATE them!" Anger was building up inside him and he let out a growl.
"Matt, your eyes!" Jeremy cried. "They're glowing!"
Matt shook his head. "Every time I think of Damon and Stefan I get angry and want to kill them!" he said. He hit the wall with his right fist which broke through the wall, surprising himself and his friends.
Jeremy pulled out his phone and called someone. "Ty, it's Jeremy. Where are you? You NEED to come back to Mystic Falls, NOW! It's Matt. He was bitten by a wolf weeks ago and now beginning to turn into one. He needs you." He left a message on the answerphone.
Suddenly, Matt screamed out as his legs broke and he fell to the floor.
"Bonnie, what do we do?!" Jeremy turned to her ex-girlfriend and adoptive sister's best friend who was a witch.
"Run!" Matt told them before crying out again as his bones broke and sweat dripped down his body. He took off his T-shirt.
"Why is this happening now, Bonnie? It's not even a full moon."
Bonnie shook her head. "I have no idea, Jer," she replied. "Maybe because he was bitten by a real wolf and not a werewolf that he's beginning to transition more quickly."
"Is there not a spell you can do to help Matt right now?" Jeremy asked.
She was about to shake her head, but then remembered a spell her Grams taught her. Bonnie watched as Matt's eyes glowed brightly back at her and fangs grew down and his ears stretched upwards. She closed her eyes and began chanting a spell out loud.
Matt sat on the floor sweating and his eyes and ears were back to normal. He glanced up at his friends helplessly. "You guys gotta help me."
"The spell just worked to stop the transformation now. But unfortunately, it won't stop it on the full moon," Bonnie told him.
"Thanks, Bonnie," Matt replied.
"I just hope Tyler hears my message and comes," Jeremy said.
"Me too," he replied.
"Should I call Elena and Caroline?" Bonnie asked.
"No, because they'll want to bring Damon and Stefan and I gotta keep my anger under control," Matt said.
"Don't worry, Matt, Jer and I are here for you," she assured him. She and Jeremy comforted their friend.
But Matt wasn't so sure. What was he going to do? He was turning into a wolf and wanting to rip every vampire apart. And by the next full moon, he was a wolf.
