Jessica paced back and forwards in front of the telephone, waiting for it to ring, waiting for the news of her mother's condition. She needed to start dinner, do the laundry, and sweep the floors, but she couldn't. All she could do was wait.
The only sound in the room was the slight sound made by the movement of the clock that hung over the phone. Minutes ticked by slowly.

She rushes to the phone, answers it. Telemarketer. She hangs up, and resumes pacing. She counted the steps, counted the years she had spent with her mother, counted the tests they had done over the last few days.643Please respect copyright.PENANApnG02X9SqS

She rushes to the phone, answers it again. The person on the other end asks to speak to Larry. Wrong number. She hangs up the phone, and paces once more. She wanted answers, needed them before she went insane.

Like before she picked up the phone, this time her father's voice was on the other end of the line.
"What are the doctor's saying?" she asks/
There is a pause; for a moment Jessica is afraid that her father had hung up. When he spoke his voice was low, trembling.
"Cancer."
Jessica's world stopped, the phone fell to the floor. Faintly, she heard her father's voice. "Are you there? Hello? Jessica, talk to me."643Please respect copyright.PENANA45s0qORqSi
She wanted to pick up the phone, but couldn't. Because, despite hearing her father's voice, she only heard one word.
