When we finally arrive at the destination its supper time. After eating we enter our cabins to unpack. My bunk mates consist of Lilly, a girl named Hellen and another named Erin. They are from another pack. Erin is tall and thin, her hair black as a raven’s feather and midway down her back. She has tan skin and brown eyes. Hellen is about the same as Lilly in height and build, she has light brown hair and blue eyes, like sapphires. The cabin has its own kitchen and bathroom with four bedrooms. It also has a small lounge and fireplace with wood stacked by it.
I enter the room that has a sign with my name on it and pack things away. I lay on the hard mattress. I sigh, nothing like home… but that’s the point, right?
Val… Vaal… Valyrie… Valyrie… come to me….
I’m waiting for you… you are close by.
I can sense you… I FEEL you.
“Hey Val, your brother wants to see us…” Lilly calls through the door. “Are you sure you are, okay?”
“What does he want now… and I’m totally fine… just irritated that my… uh… never mind.” I respond.
“You’ve been very quiet since well… school.” Lilly states her concern. “Is there something wrong? Did seeing Jay, really bother you?”
“It’s nothing… I’m fine.” I say as we walk to meet my brother.
Val, come to me. I stop walking and Lilly runs right into me. “Okay seriously? What is up with you? You seem so… I don’t know… distracted.” Lilly complains.
“I’m sorry, what?” I ask.
“Exactly my point… distracted.” She states.
“Lilly, I’m fine… I’m only distracted because…” don’t tell anyone… “because I’ve been thinking about, you know, things… ‘the calling’, you, Jay, finding out if I will have my chance to, I don’t know prove I’m not just… crazy.” I admit.
“You aren’t crazy… at least not that I think.” Lilly encourages.
“That wasn’t what I meant… not literally crazy. Crazy as in where I stand in my family. My brother is going to become Alpha… where do I fit in? Jayson seemed upset that I brushed him off. Isn’t it better if he doesn’t have me around him to be a bother? I’m a nobody. I don’t belong… he doesn’t need me. He never has. He needs to focus on being a leader not about what his sister wants or needs or thinks or does. He needs to forget about me. I’m done hiding in his shadow.” I state my claim.
“I never viewed you as hiding in my shadow. You have always been independent. You are a lot stronger than you believe. I pushed you away, picked on you, and wasn’t very caring towards you, but I did care. I wanted you to be able to stand on your own. That is why I acted as I did. You are my sister for moons sake. Of course, I loved and cared about you. You will make a fine Luna…” Jayson says with hesitation on the last part.
“There is no guarantee that I will become a Luna. You know that. Unless you know something that I don’t.” I state.
“Told you he cared, though I didn’t know all that.” Lilly smirks.
“Lils, thanks for getting her here, but could you give us a minute?” my brother asks.
“Of course, Alpha.” Lilly says.
“I’m not the alpha yet.” Jayson says and Lilly smiles and steps out of ear shot. He wraps me in a hug, “I’ve missed you, sis. I’m sorry about how I treated you growing up. I had my reasons though, please forgive me?”
“Jay, I’ve missed you too. I felt torn. I hated you leaving. I know you had to. I needed you though… I was going through so many changes, and I was only 14. The start of my journey into adulthood, and now I am starting my true journey. I was scared and still am.”
“Why would you need me at 14?” he wondered, “I couldn’t have helped with the whole womanhood thing.”
“Of course, you wouldn’t know… when you left you didn’t even bother checking in with me to see how I was doing.” I push him away. Tears stain my cheeks, “If you would have, you would have known what I was dealing with.” I step away a few more steps before turning and running. “Don’t fallow me.” I yell back. I continue running with no idea where I was running to. Suddenly I trip and tumble to the ground. Panting, I move to a sitting position and lean against a tree. I stand and walk, realizing I’m in the woods, the forest.
Val, come to me, not much farther.
Even being exhausted, I continue, seeking the voice. After walking a short distance, I come to a river. I see a woman and a wolf, both having a glow about them.
They turn and the woman speaks, “Valyrie Kay White, I am the Moon Goddess. This wolf spirit claims you. She says you are her chosen host. I am here to assist in the joining, but first I need to know if you accept her as your wolf.”
“Oh. My. Goddess,” I bow, “of course, I will accept and claim her as she did me. I will be honored to become one heart, one mind, and one body with her soul. I am ready to begin.”
The Goddess turns to the wolf, “are you sure she is the right one?”
I am certain. I have already linked our minds. She is my chosen one. The wolf’s voice echoes in my mind.
The moon goddess nods. “Then let us begin. Ms. White kneel and close your eyes.” I do as I am told, and she continues, “Rage, approach Valyrie, let her touch you.” I lift my hands to feel the silkiest fur I have ever felt in my life. “Now, Rage, Put your head against hers.” The wolf leans in closer to me and her head touches mine. “Valyrie, open your eyes and look into Rage’s eyes.” When I do so, it just feels right. “Now that you both have expressed to one another your vow to be one, I say let it be so.”
The wolf’s body vanishes, and I can feel her getting comfortable within me. I ask, “now what?”
The Goddess smiles, “you will get to know each other and when you are familiar enough, then you will be able to transform from one to the other.”
“What do you mean by ‘getting to know each other’, exactly?” I ask confused.
“Well, each on has their own way. You will have to discover that with one another.” She vanishes.
“So… are you settled in then?” I ask aloud.
You need not speak aloud. We can speak through our mind link. You can also mind link with other wolves.
Really?
Yes, really. Now we must return to camp. They will be worried about you.
So, it is a camp after all. This is my first year.
I hear leaves crunch in the distance, and Rage assures me that it is but another wolf. He is concerned about you. He smells like you, but not exactly.
“Jayson is that you?” I see a solid black wolf appearing through the trees. His storm-colored eyes to match mine. “I told you not to fallow me.”
Look away Val, or you will see me naked… his voice in my head surprises me.
“You mean every time we transform back, we will be naked?” I exclaim and turn away from him. The sound of bones cracking makes me cringe.
“I was worried about you. Although it seems like I shouldn’t have… smells like you got yourself a wolf. I was surprised when Lilly told me what happened earlier today, but once she said it, I knew what was going to happen. I didn’t think it would be tonight though.” He states.
He's an alpha. I can smell it, and by his sheer size tells me so. Rage asks.
Yes, he’s an alpha… well soon to be. He’s also my brother. I tell her.
I approve. He loves you. You are important to him. She adds, he is ashamed about something though.
I sigh, “What else did Lilly tell you?”
“Let’s just say, I owe Kayzen a thanks.” He admits.
“How much did she say, exactly?” I panic.
“No need to panic. She explained to me that you have had a difficult time with men. That they just want you to have sex with them, you are a bit young for that. Anyway, she also said Kayzen chased them off and the girls would pick on you.” He explains.
“Those ‘girls’ were jealous… I look good and my brother is soon to be alpha… and that I live in the same house as you. Kaz helped with the guys sure… I wouldn’t allow them to soil me anyway and that includes him. He’s my friend and nothing more.”
“I should have been the one to scare them off, not Kayzen or Kaz as you call him. I’m sorry. I’d hug you but that would be quite awkward. I’m going to transform back into my wolf so…” his bones crack and break and shift as his wolf reappears.
“Okay…”
Let’s go back. I’ll show you the way and I will walk so I don’t lose you again. I assume you can’t shift forms yet.
“No, I can’t… why can you talk to me in wolf form, but I can’t quite do that to you?” I ask.
In time you will learn how to communicate without words. Your wolf will explain how to do it. I can attempt but the wolf knows best.
We walk together until we exit the forest. He leads me to my cabin, and the door flies open. Lilly hugs me tightly, then she sees the wolf.
“Woah, is that Jay?” She asks excided.
“Yes… if you like him now, wait till he turns back.” I state.
“Why?” she asks.
“You’ll find out, and I’m sure your jaw will drop. Afterall, you are still crushing on him. Who knows, maybe he feels the same… he hasn’t stated if he’s found a mate yet.” I giggle.
“Val! He’s still here!” Lilly shrieks.
“So? It’s not like he couldn’t smell your excitement, when you first saw him… he’s a wolf… instincts, or have you forgotten?” I point out.
Val, what are you trying to do? Rage asks.
As if you didn’t know. You can sense it… they are hooked on each other. I respond.
“Val, stop spacing out…” Lilly exclaims.
“I’m not! I was talking with Rage, my wolf…” I state.
“WHAT! You already have joined with her! That’s so exciting.” She jumps up and down.
“Anyway… I’m going to go inside. You two can have your moment I’m going to sleep.” I walk in exhausted. I go straight to my room and pass out on the bed.
