Cahira POV
Today was the last day of the Gurukul and I wanted to make an impression. I stood in front of my mirror and surveyed myself. I am 5′7 which is pretty tall, especially when compared to the Indian community here.
I have my grandmother’s green eyes and a few Irish facial features from my though my Indian ancestry stands out from my father’s side. I surveyed my light brown hair and decided to leave it open. My hair has tinges of golden and red in it and reaches my waist in slight curls.
Oddly I have a streak of white hairs near my right ear which I can never do anything about and believe me I tried so I keep it hidden. But then odd and weird is my middle name as I am a bottle full of oddities. I have no memories of my childhood before age of 11 due to an accident where my father and I were severely injured and ended up in a coma. While I awoke 2 years later my father has still not awoken. Due to the coma and my injuries my magic core was depleted and my powers never manifested. Generally, Witches gain their powers at age of 12 but here I was at 18 and still powerless or as we call it here Kamjor.
Though I am the daughter of the Priestess of our coven, I am considered a freak and people don’t really warm up to me. I was not bullied per se but kids can be very mean. I have only one close friend who was also sort of a social outcast like me. Other than that it has been a lonely trek to adulthood not that I mind. I had long ago accepted my fate and now I want to live peacefully with my family making potions and healers.
I decided to keep it simple and chose a blue Kurti with faded jeans. A dash of kohl in my eyes and chandbalis in my ears and I was ready. My mother and aunt had already left as they were hosting today’s assembly. I locked the house, hopped on the bike and rode towards the Gurukul. By the time I reached the main hall most of the seats were occupied.
My mother and aunt were standing near the raised dais and both saw me slinking in. Aunty waved and gestured me to a seat in the second row. I hurried over to it avoiding my mother’s eyes. Yes, I was late but I stopped for some Idli and vada on the way and let me tell you it was Yummm. People shifted a little upon seeing me and whispers started but I ignored it as it was something I have become used to so it doesn’t bother me much.
“Ahh I thought I smelled something funny, guess I was right. It smells like rotten eggs here”. came an irritating but familiar voice of our version of Queen Bee Samaira.“No no Samaira It’s just our Cahira smelling like what she is A kamjor” her sister Shyla was close second in being second rate muppet-bitch.Laughter rang out and everyone looked in my direction. Of all my tormentors, I hated Samaira and Shyla the most. While others always skirted around me these two always managed to get under my skin.
” oh no it’s coming from you samaira. I think you have now started spreading your stink. After all everyone saw how you dunked out in your own vomit yesterday.”
“You... You Bitch. I did not.....”
“Silence please the assembly is about to commence. Cahira please take your seat” My aunt’s voice rang out. Aka Cahira Shut up and sit down. Samaira and her posse glared at me where as I sat down feeling smug. My mother took the dais and started the assembly. “let’s start with our Prayer first. Everyone please stand and offer your greetings to our Gods, our mother Hecate, Freyja and the Universe.” Everyone stood and joined their hands in the universal sign of prayer. A hymn of our sacred verses was sung by all. Once finished everyone again took their seats and eagerly waited for our priestess to begin. ” As you all know our current class of Magi’s and mages are done with their Warecraft training. All 26 of them will be entering the circle of power in front of Chief Crone and elders to determine their power level and role. I wish you all the best. You all are our future and I hope you will continue our legacy and strengthen our coven in the coming tides”.
For all the kids joining the new class, Welcome to Lune d’ etoiles Coven. Our temple is one of the most revered for witchcraft and magicary. You will learn the art and history that our ancestors have passed on to us. I wish you good luck on your Journey.” Everyone clapped and my mother handed over the dias to my Aunt Esmeralda.
“Welcome, I am Esmeralda the High Witch of Coven Lune d’ etoiles or simply D’lune. For those who are new to our lands let me begin by telling our story.
After the Reveal and during the Great War, Witches tried to stay neutral but were dragged into the war. Our High Priestess Saella was sympathetic to the loss of human lives. She was one of the most powerful witches in history and she tried to stop the war but was betrayed by the Vampires. Her coven Delumes d Couvent was imprisoned and she sacrificed her life to save them. This led to enmity between witches and vampires reaching a severe point and both sides suffered heavy losses, especially us.
The absolute treaty mandated that witches and vampires will stay clear of each other when in need. Vampires were granted their choice of land while witches were allowed to settle within human settlements away from Vampires and practice their craft. At that time we were in a precarious situation as We had lost our anchor our high priestess and our warrior coven. While every witch was fighting we were not meant to be warriors. So our council led by our crone Ahilda D’lune accepted the terms and retreated to far corners of the world. We D’lunes settled here on the banks of the Bay of Bengal.
Our gurukul serves as the training academy for magi’s and mages from all 21 covens across the world. You are all here because your powers have already manifested in form of half runes on your hips and wrists when you turned 12. We aim to enable you in all wares of witchcraft before you develop your elemental powers and ascend to a full witch or warlock. For the next few years, this is your home. I hope you all have a comforting and enlighting stay, Thankyou”
A light wave of clapping and murmurs started. Esmeralda spoke again ” The Trainees are requested to return to their classes. All the newcomers kindly proceed to the atrium outside. You will be guided further by the teachers”. Most of the crowd left while murmuring to each other. Esmeralda waited for everyone to leave and then turned to the remaining students. “Now All of you magi’s and mages will be participating in the Enlightment Ritual where you will be entering the circle of Power one by one after having a drop of elixir.
Those of you who have already ascended i.e. completed 18 years of age, your runes would have been fully formed. The elders and Mother crone will assess the level of your power and accordingly your warecraft will be decided. The ones achieving the level of vládce i.e Level One, druhý i.e Level Two will be further sent to elite e foghlam in Mainland for Assessment and Advanced training. Though everyone knows that there has been no vládce level witch in 2 centuries but still we have hope. Those achieving Trini i.e level three will have the option of either joining The warrior community Nokinees or joining the regular witches in choosing their own ware of life. I wish you all the best in your endeavors. May the goddess Hecate and Freyja bless you.”
Murmurs and whispers alighted as soon as Esmeralda stepped off the dais. Everyone was whispering to each other other than of course me. I looked down at my hands and tuned out the rest. Now the Warecraft training was officially over. While I do not have any power I do have some magical affinity that enables me to make elixirs and potions.
Every witch can control a special element or aspect of nature other than the basic level of witchcraft wares. The degree of control depended on the level of power each one had. It varied from minor control to complete mastery of that element. The specialty was engrained in the rune in form of a symbol and after ascension their powers were fully developed. According to the Oni’es law, all level one and two witches and warlocks were required to attend the Elite academy where they would be assessed and a few talented ones would be inducted into the royal city which is one of the highest achievement one could get.
Even though my powers did not manifest I was trained in witchcraftery wares like potions, crystals, mediums etc courtesy of my mother and aunt. I had learned everything which was there to learn be it a spell, incantation, or runes but it was of no use as I cannot wield any power. The best option for me is to Live among the Regulars i.e. Humans.
I can always be a cool psychic or a hot gypsy medium or a Fortuneteller, the world was my oyster but my mother and I still have to have that talk and like all things wrong in my life we just could not find the same ground to talk more than a minute without getting into argument.
While she never showed it I knew she was disappointed in me. We had tried many rituals, potions, etc but nothing could explain why my powers never manifested. Me and aunt Esme traveled to all covens and other magical communities but no one had any answer. I held some hope of being a late bloomer till 18 but that too was snuffed out last month on my birthday. Now I have accepted my fate and I started learning to live with it.370Please respect copyright.PENANAUjkc0AJIpy
