A lot of people take things for granted, whether it be objects, opportunities, or even other people. What they don't realize is that sometimes, you only have one chance to make that thing, or person, yours, and then it will fade away in the background. I've received many of these, but for a long time, I just disregarded them. Now, I'm at the stage of life where I have to work really hard to make myself a ripple in the ocean we call society.
I find myself taking almost any opportunity I can get my hands on so I can stand out. I was born half-black -Puerto Rican. My colored skin makes a lot of things more difficult and harder to reach than a person with light skin. I hate it, and I wish it was different. I have to work twice as hard to get to the starting line, not to mention the race itself. So I've been taught as soon as something comes up, reach for it and take it before anyone knows it's existence.
