“Riley, stay awake for a me.” Paris lightly patted her cheek when her eyes closed, making her lashes part. “Good, keep those eyes open.”
She lazily stared up at him when the car slowed to a stop, and the driver’s door closed, Veo stepping over to them seconds later and opening the door.
“Don’t worry,” Paris told her. “I won’t drop you.” And he lifted her in his arms, getting out of the car as Riley remained limp like a rag doll. “Veo,” Paris said, “Veo, support her head with something.”
The man quickly ran to the car and pulled out a blanket from the trunk, making his way back to them both.
“Here,” he said, lightly lifting Riley’s neck and stuffing the fabric in between Paris’s arm and her head, gently setting her neck back down onto the cushion.
“There…” Paris said as Veo stood back up, “better?”
She only looked at him, silver eyes glistening, and stared back off into the distance.
“I think that was a ‘yes,’” Paris said, chuckling. “Thank you, Veo. I appreciate it.”
He nodded, waving to the train that was sitting on the tracks.
It was like it was waiting for them.
Paris walked up to the doors where two men in black suits stood, and they stepped sideways when he entered, and Paris then carried Riley down a couple cars, passing the dining car that was deserted, the sleeping car that clearly used to be a caboose, getting to the seating car where people just sat and watched the trees pass.
But there was no one there… they were all alone.
Was Paris the president of the US or something?
But he stepped to one of the doors on their right, two men that Riley now realized were behind them opening the door, and Paris stepped in, sitting down while Riley remained limp in his arms.
“Is she here yet?” Paris said to the guard. “You put a tail on her, right?”
Who were they talking about…?
“Yes,” the guard said, “they said she’d be here in two minutes.”
“Good,” Paris stated. “The last thing she needs is to lose someone else.”
Who were they talking about?
“While we’re waiting,” Paris told him. “Get a blanket, yeah?”
He nodded. “Yeah.” And walked off, the other guard remaining in his position.
“See?” Paris said down to Riley. “You’re going to be fine.” And he gazed back up at the guard. “Whereabouts on C.N.?”
“Three minutes back,” he responded.
Paris nodded, seeming relieved. “Okay. Take her to the medic car.”
“Yes, sir,” he stated.
Who was C.N.?
“Paris…” Riley whispered, still feeling exhausted from the sedative, “Paris….”
“Yes?” he uttered.
“Who…” she said, “even are you?”
He smiled. “Not to be trifled with, so just stay in here with me. I have cruel punishments if you try to escape.”
Her eyes rounded as something inside her burned.
“Oh, relax,” he said, rolling his eyes while still smiling, “I was messing with you. I’m not going to hurt you, Riley. So chill out.”
“Are you…” she said, “part of the government?”
He suddenly started laughing, and the guard outside did, too.
“What?” she said sadly. “Why are you laughing at me?”
Paris’s chuckles trailed off, and he gazed at Riley with raised bows. “Honey, we’re far from the government.”
What did that mean?
He shook his head at her confused stare. “If you need anything,” he stated. “Just let me know, I’ll get it. Everyone will be here in about five-ish minutes, and we’ll depart in ten. Everything will be okay,” he promised. “Everyone you love will be safe now, I promise.”
Riley’s brows drew together.
