“It’s not fair, Jules. How can they just get away with this?” the younger girl asked, pulling her knees up to her chest, and fighting back tears. Jules was not always the best at comforting people, but she sat down on the bed next to her younger friend and wrapped her arms tightly around her.

“I know it’s not Scarlett, but there isn’t much we can do,” Jules told her, rubbing a hand gently on the younger girls back.

“I wish they were all dead, everyone one of them. I just want to kill them all, shoot them and make them suffer the way they did to us,” Scarlett said, digging her nails into her wrist, reopening the cuts from before. “My dad was bad enough, but them?” The redhead burst into tears, rocking back and forth.

Jules looked up at a point over Scarlett’s head, her mind deep in thought.

Jules was sitting in the library, reading when HE walked in. He placed a hand on the table and cleared his throat, waiting for the girl to look up at him. After a minute, Jules marked her place in the book , before looking up.

“C-can I help you?” she asked, staring at the boy before her. Alexander Putman, star basketball player. It had taken her almost the whole year to get up the courage to talk to him, and even now he had to initiate the conversation.

“There’s this party this Saturday, you have got to come,” Alex said, taking the seat next to her and propping his feet up on the table, tilting his chair back a bit.

“Parties aren’t my thing,” Jules said, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Come on Jules, it’ll be great. If you don’t like it you can leave,” Alex told her, arguing with her for twenty minutes before she finally gave in.

“Don’t worry about it Scarlett. I’ll make sure that they never hurt you again,” Jules promised, wiping the tears from her only friend’s eyes. “I’ll take care of all of this.”

Scarlett sat alone, on the park bench, when Alex walked up, sitting down next to her. When the younger girl jumped, he held up his hands, quickly apologizing.

“Will there be wine?” Scarlett asked, turning to face the schools basketball star. Normally Scarlett would never say yes, but lately her father had been too drunk to notice whether she was home or not. And Scarlett figured she could grab a few drinks, then find a place to crash for the night.

“For you, yes,” Alex said, winking. Scarlett had to keep herself from flinching at such a harmless gesture and smiled, agreeing to go to the party. She might even stay a bit, she thought if she could find a quiet place to herself.

Jules woke up the next morning, Halloween day, with a plan in mind. She packed her bookbag while Scarlett was in the shower, lending the girl a change of clothes for the day. Once both were ready for school, they set out on the walk, neither girl talking, both lost in their own thoughts.

Ninth grade teacher Angela Vinson was acting as a hall monitor as the first bell of the morning rang. She watched as the Alexander laughed in the hallway, near his locker where a group of basketball players had gathered. From the words she could make it, it seemed as if they were talking about a party of some sort. What she didn’t expect to see was shy Jules walk in their direction.

“Hey, Alex,” Jules called, smiling as the boy turned to face her. One hand reached into the inside pocket of her jacket, where she pulled out a small pistol.

Scarlett was sick and tired of the loud noise, the obnoxious drunk people, and the jocks that were hitting on her. She let out a sigh of relief, glad to have found a room that wasn’t occupied by some couple. She took another sip of the wine Alex had given her, when she began to feel a bit lightheaded. Then again, this was her sixth cup of wine. She decided to lay down for a bit….
Jules felt so out of place at this party. Part of her wondered why she had even bothered to go in the first place. With a sigh, she slipped into a room whose door was slightly open, not bothering to check for occupants. She shut the door behind her.

“Relax Jules, she wanted this.” Alex said, his speech slurred. He stumbled forward, toward Jules, still half undressed. He reached out for her…..

Julies jerked up, shocked awake by the vividness of the dream and what she had done in it. It felt so real, as if it had happened. Blinking sleepily, she looked over and saw the time and date. It was Saturday, she had two hours before the party began….
