Mortuus lifted his weak body from the seat of the pod. The room he had left behind when he entered the pod was not the same one he returned to. It was utterly devastated and destroyed. His vision cleared, and his heart raced as he hyperventilated with no clue what was happening.
The pod door was now significantly slashed with five massive and deep cuts in the metal, and the glass shattered on the floor of the pod. The chairs and table in the room were smashed and clawed. The pod's control panel had a massive gash, exposing wires and sending sparks in all directions. Wires dangling from the ceiling, lights flickering uncontrollably.
"Something definitely changed. I'm not in Kansas anymore-" Mortuus chuckled nervously, trying to joke to calm his shaken nerves.
CLANG!!
Whatever had done this was still in the room and had knocked into a metal dish. It hit the ground loudly, alerting Mortuus to the attention of a baleful beast across the room. It reared back, falling back to its hands and rushing forward, its strong hands propelling it forward with great skill. The creature lurched toward Mortuus with shocking speed, missing him by a hair as he dodged its massive claws.
The creature slammed into an overturned cart, leaving Mortuus with enough time to jump up and make a mad dash for the massive ten-inch thick steel door. He locked the hefty door and sealed the beast in the room alone.
"WHAT PART OF REST IN PEACE IS THIS???" Mortuus shouted, running down the hall and sliding into his room just in time to hear the creature smash through the door. Despite its skeletal frame, it was strong enough to quickly break the door.
Mortuus clutched his revolver so tightly his hands ached and hid behind the door of his room, the creature smashing doors in search of him. Each loud crash made him flinch, the crashing getting louder and closer with each passing moment. It was only a matter of minutes, maybe seconds, before it found him.
The creature burst into the room with a deranged screech that sounded like a wounded animal mixed with human howls of pain. Mortuus lifted the revolver and shot repeatedly, his eyes sealed shut with fear. Mortuus's bullets fly into the creature's skin.
The bullets did nothing but anger it more. It reared onto its legs, towering a good three feet over Mortuus's head. It was terrifyingly big, standing at eight feet and nine inches. Its head was almost hitting the tall roof of the room, and it had to duck in order to enter the doorway.
The creature swatted its massive clawed hands towards Mortuus's head. With sickening squelch and bloody spray, his head flew from his neck and into the wall. The creature ran off again, seeming satisfied by Mortuus's body collapsing limply to the ground, seemingly dead.
Mortuus lay there in a pool of his own blood as it gushed out of the neck, his spine hanging out of the opening like a dead worm in the dirt. He was dead by all standards, yet his fingers twitched with life as he sat up.
He picked up his head and clicked it into place, standing up. Mortuus made his way back out of the room, following the creature's trail of destruction. He ran down the hall, finding a large cavity in a steel door. It was massive, and the edges were rough and pointed inward. The creature had come in through this hole. It forced its way into the bunker and left a hole the size of a small military tank.
Outside the hole, Mortuus could hear the sounds of strange animals and see the light of... was that an orb? He was not sure what he was seeing. All he knew was things would never be the same once he stepped out.
With a sigh and deep breath, Mortuus took a step out.
